Transmission Failure Modes: Clutch vs Band vs Hard Part

Not all transmission failures are equal. A clutch failure costs less than a hard-part failure. A band failure is different from a pump failure. Here's how to identify what failed and what it costs to fix.

Major failure categories

Soft failures (clutch, band, seal):

  • Often repairable with rebuild
  • $1,500-3,500 typical fix

Hardware failures (planetary, drum, shaft):

  • More expensive
  • Hard parts replacement
  • $3,000-5,000+ typical

Total failures (case crack, severe damage):

  • Replacement often warranted
  • $5,000-8,000+
  • Sometimes total loss

Clutch failure

What clutches do:

  • Engage/disengage gears
  • Carry torque through gears
  • Multiple per trans (forward, direct, intermediate, etc.)

Symptoms:

Pan inspection shows:

Fix:

Common clutch failures:

Band failure

What bands do:

  • Wrap around drums for gear reaction
  • Different from clutches
  • Specific gears (typically 2nd or reverse)

Symptoms:

Pan inspection shows:

  • Different material than clutch (often darker)
  • Sometimes pieces of band

Fix:

Common band failures:

  • 4L60E 2-4 band
  • 4L80E intermediate band
  • TH350/TH400 band failures

Hard part failure

What hard parts are:

  • Drums, planetaries, sun shells
  • Forged or cast components
  • Not wear parts (should last forever)

Symptoms:

Pan inspection shows:

  • Visible metal pieces
  • Not just friction material
  • Sometimes identifiable fragments

Fix:

Common hard part failures:

Pump failure

What pumps do:

  • Generate hydraulic pressure
  • Drive all apply forces
  • One per trans

Symptoms:

Pan inspection shows:

  • Aluminum dust (pump body wear)
  • Sometimes pump vane pieces

Fix:

Common pump failures:

Seal failure

What seals do:

  • Prevent fluid leakage
  • Maintain pressure
  • Multiple per trans

Symptoms:

Pan inspection:

  • Sometimes shows rubber pieces
  • Or no obvious damage

Fix:

Solenoid failure

What solenoids do:

  • Electrical control of hydraulics
  • TCC, shift, pressure control
  • Read our 4L60E TCC solenoid

Symptoms:

Fix:

Multi-mode failures

When multiple things fail:

  • Clutch + band
  • Band + hard part
  • Pump + clutch
  • Usually cascading

Cause-effect:

  • Low fluid → slip → heat → burnt clutches
  • Worn solenoid → wrong apply → clutch damage
  • Bad pump → low pressure → all clutches slip and burn

Diagnosis:

Determining failure type from symptoms

Slip in specific gear only:

  • Likely clutch or band specific to that gear

Slip in all gears:

Hard shifts:

  • Solenoid or valve body
  • Solenoid often cheaper

No engagement:

  • Pump catastrophic OR
  • Hard part broken (sun shell, sprag)

Grinding:

  • Hard part contact
  • Severe damage
  • Don't drive

Pan inspection summary

Light gray dust:

  • Normal wear

Heavy gray sludge:

  • Clutch burn

Brown paste:

  • Severe clutch damage

Metal flakes:

Large metal pieces:

  • Catastrophic
  • Identifiable fragments

Cost summary by failure type

Seal only:

  • $150-500 fix
  • Often DIY

Solenoid only:

  • $200-600 fix
  • Sometimes DIY

Clutch failure (one):

  • Full rebuild required
  • $1,500-3,500

Pump failure:

  • During rebuild: $200-700 added
  • Standalone: $500-1,000

Hard part failure (single):

  • Rebuild + hard part: $2,000-4,000
  • Sonnax HD upgrade pairs well

Multiple hard parts / catastrophic:

  • $3,500-5,500+
  • Or replacement
