The 6L80 generates pressure control solenoid codes (P0775-P0779) when one of the five PC solenoids fails or signals incorrectly. Here's the full diagnosis path.
What pressure control solenoids do
The 6L80 uses 5 pressure control solenoids:
- PC1 — line pressure modulator
- PC2 — converter clutch
- PC3 — 1-2-3-4 clutch
- PC4 — 3-5-reverse clutch
- PC5 — 4-5-6 clutch / 2-6 clutch
Each modulates pressure to a specific clutch pack. When one fails, you lose shifts or get harsh/soft application in specific gears.

Code-by-code breakdown
P0775 — Pressure Control Solenoid B Stuck Off
- Affects: 2-6 clutch / PC5
- Symptom: No 2nd, 5th, 6th gear or slip
- Severity: High
- Fix: Replace PC5 solenoid (mechatronics service)
P0776 — Pressure Control Solenoid B Stuck On
- Affects: Same as P0775, opposite mode
- Symptom: Harsh 2nd, 5th, 6th application
- Severity: High
- Fix: Replace PC5 solenoid
P0777 — Pressure Control Solenoid B Stuck (general)
- Affects: PC5
- Symptom: Erratic 2nd/5th/6th
- Severity: High
- Fix: Replace PC5 solenoid
P0778 — Pressure Control Solenoid B Electrical
- Affects: PC5 wiring
- Symptom: Same as P0775
- Severity: High
- Fix: Check harness, then replace solenoid
P0779 — Pressure Control Solenoid B Intermittent
- Affects: PC5
- Symptom: Intermittent shift quality
- Severity: Medium
- Fix: Check harness; consider mechatronics service

P0780-P0784 — Shift Solenoid codes
- Different solenoids (SS1, SS2)
- Read our 4L80E shift solenoid guide for principles (4L80E vs 6L80 differ, but solenoid logic similar)
P0796-P0798 — PC3 codes (1-2-3-4 clutch)
- Same logic, different solenoid
- Affects 1st-4th gears

Diagnosis sequence
Step 1: Scan tool data
- Capture freeze frame
- Read TCM and PCM codes both
- Note any related codes (TCC, shift solenoids)
Step 2: Pan inspection
- Drop pan, inspect material
- Burnt friction material = internal clutch damage upstream
- Read our transmission pan inspection guide
Step 3: Mechatronics removal and inspection
- 6L80 mechatronics is removable in vehicle
- Read our 6L80 mechatronics rebuild guide
Step 4: Solenoid replacement or full mechatronics
- Single solenoid swap: $50-150 part + labor
- Full mechatronics: $1,200-2,200
When to replace single solenoid vs full mechatronics
Single solenoid makes sense if:
- One code only
- Mechatronics inspection shows wear localized
- Wiring intact
- Cost-sensitive build
Full mechatronics makes sense if:
- Multiple PC codes
- Visible valve body wear
- High mileage (150K+)
- TCM communication issues
- Recurring failures after solenoid swap
Costs and parts
Individual PC solenoids:
- ACDelco OEM: $80-150
- Quality aftermarket: $50-100
- Updated revision part numbers (check year)
Sonnax solenoid sets:
- Complete updated PC set: $300-500
- Mandatory if multiple solenoids worn
Full mechatronics reman:
- ACDelco: $1,500-2,200
- Quality aftermarket: $1,000-1,500
- Avoid eBay "rebuilds" under $500

Cascade considerations
When solenoid fails, clutch can be damaged too:
- Stuck-on solenoid burns clutch (overheats)
- Stuck-off solenoid causes slip (burns clutch)
- Either way, related clutch may be damaged
Pan inspection reveals if damage extended:
- Burnt friction in pan = clutch damage
- May require full rebuild, not just solenoid

After repair: adapt relearn
Adapt learn procedure:
1. Battery disconnect 10 min after repair
2. Reconnect
3. Drive through gears under various loads
4. Allow 100-500 miles for adapts to settle
If codes return:
- Verify connector seating
- Check internal harness
- Verify fluid level (critical on 6L80)
- Read our transmission fluid types guide
