The 4L80E uses two main shift solenoids — A and B — that work together to command all four forward gears. When one fails, the trans defaults to limp mode or sticks in a single gear.
What shift solenoids do in a 4L80E
The 4L80E uses on/off shift solenoids commanded by the PCM:
- Solenoid A on / B off = 1st gear
- Solenoid A on / B on = 2nd gear
- Solenoid A off / B on = 3rd gear
- Solenoid A off / B off = 4th gear
When one fails, you lose gears or the trans defaults to 3rd (limp mode).

Symptoms
Solenoid A failure:
- Code P0751 (Shift Solenoid A performance)
- Stuck in 2nd or 3rd
- No 1st gear engagement
- Harsh shifts
Solenoid B failure:
- Code P0756 (Shift Solenoid B performance)
- No 3rd or 4th gear
- Limp mode (3rd only)
- Slipping shifts
Both failed:
- Limp mode, harsh
- No shifts at all
- Code P0700 (general TCM)
Testing
Resistance test:
- Disconnect solenoid pack connector
- Probe each solenoid pin to ground
- Spec: 19-31 ohms per solenoid
- Open or shorted = replace
Read our 4L80E solenoid pack replacement guide for the complete pack-level procedure.
Replacement: pack-level vs solenoid-level
Almost always: replace entire pack
The 4L80E solenoid pack integrates A, B, TCC PWM, PC, and 3-2 control solenoids plus wiring and pressure switches. Individual solenoid replacement requires tear-down of the pack — not practical.
Quality pack options:
- ACDelco OEM (best, $250-400)
- Borg-Warner (quality aftermarket, $180-280)
- Avoid generic eBay packs (counterfeit risk)

Replacement procedure
Tools needed:
- 10mm and 13mm sockets
- T-25 Torx
- Drain pan
- Pan gasket (new)
- New solenoid pack
- New trans fluid
Steps:
1. Drain trans fluid (drop pan, 17-bolt pan on 4L80E)
2. Remove filter
3. Remove solenoid pack retaining bolts (typically 5)
4. Disconnect internal harness from pack
5. Slide old pack out carefully
6. Install new pack with new O-rings
7. Torque pack bolts to 96 in-lb
8. Reconnect harness
9. New filter, pan gasket
10. Refill with 7-8 quarts Dexron VI
Time: 3-5 hours DIY
Cost:
- ACDelco pack: $250-400
- Filter/gasket: $30-50
- Fluid: $50-70
- Total: $330-520
When the pack isn't the problem
Pressure switch manifold (PSM) failure:
The 4L80E PSM senses hydraulic pressure and reports to PCM. When it fails, you get false solenoid codes. PSM is part of the pack on most years.
Internal wiring harness:
Trans-internal wiring chafes on the pack. Aftermarket harness available separately.
TCC slipping (different problem):
Read our 4L60E TCC solenoid guide — different trans, but similar TCC behavior.
After replacement: relearn
The 4L80E doesn't have adaptive learn the way 6L80 does, but if you cleared codes the PCM may need a drive cycle to confirm fix. If codes return:
- Verify connector seating
- Check PSM
- Check internal harness condition
Read our 4L80E intermediate sprag failure guide if shifts are harsh after fix — may be deeper.
Year-specific notes
