The intermediate sprag on a 4L80E is a one-way clutch that's critical to proper operation. When it fails, the trans loses gears or behaves erratically. Here's how to diagnose and fix.
What the intermediate sprag does
The intermediate sprag is a one-way clutch (roller or mechanical). It allows rotation in one direction but locks in the other. In the 4L80E, it's part of the intermediate clutch system that allows 2nd and 3rd gear operation.
How it fails
Mode 1: Sprag slipping (worn)
Sprag rollers/elements worn. Doesn't lock when it should. Trans loses 2nd or 3rd gear engagement.
Mode 2: Sprag broken
Catastrophic failure. Pieces of sprag damage other components. Major rebuild required.
Mode 3: Sprag installed wrong
After rebuild: sprag installed backwards. Trans doesn't work properly from day one.
Symptoms
Slipping sprag:
- Loss of 2nd gear engagement
- Flares on 1-2 or 2-3 shift
- High RPM at gear that should engage
- Eventually progresses to complete failure
Broken sprag:
- Sudden loss of multiple gears
- Grinding or knocking sound
- Trans pieces in pan (catastrophic)
- Often requires major rebuild beyond just sprag
Backwards install:
- No 2nd or 3rd from rebuild
- Trans doesn't function correctly after rebuild
- Indicates rebuild error
HD sprag options
Stock-replacement sprag
- OEM-equivalent quality
- Acceptable for stock-power applications
- $50-100
HD sprag (Sonnax, ATI)
- Higher load capacity
- Better materials
- Mandatory for tow and HD applications
- $80-200
Race sprag
- Maximum load capacity
- Race-spec materials
- $150-400
When to replace
Mandatory at rebuild:
The intermediate sprag should be replaced during every 4L80E rebuild. They wear predictably.
Required upgrade for:
- Tow applications (HD sprag minimum)
- Performance applications (HD sprag)
- Race (race-spec sprag)
After symptoms:
If sprag failure is suspected, rebuild is typically required to address damage caused by failure.
Cost summary
Standalone replacement (unusual — typically done at rebuild):
- Standard sprag: $50-100
- HD sprag: $80-200
- Labor: $400-800 (trans must come out)
As part of full rebuild:
- Cost included or small add-on ($30-100)
- Same labor as rebuild
