4L60E TCC Solenoid Replacement: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Fix

The TCC solenoid is one of the most common 4L60E failure points. Here's how to spot it, test it, and replace it without dropping the trans.

What the TCC solenoid does

The torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid is an electrically-actuated valve in the valve body. The PCM commands it on at cruise to lock the torque converter mechanically — eliminates slip, improves MPG, and reduces fluid heat.

When it fails, lockup either never happens, happens at the wrong time, or stays partially on causing shudder and stalling.

Symptoms of a failing TCC solenoid

Most common:

  • Code P0740 (TCC circuit malfunction)
  • Code P1870 (TCC slipping)
  • Engine stalls at stop after coming off highway
  • Shudder at cruise around 45-55 mph
  • No lockup feel — RPMs stay high at cruise
  • MPG drops noticeably

Less common but related:

  • Slipping in 4th gear
  • TCC won't disengage
  • Overheating from constant TCC slip

What's actually failing

Three failure modes:

Electrical failure

Coil opens or shorts. Easy to verify with multimeter.

Mechanical failure

Pintle sticks open or closed, or O-ring fails letting pressure bypass.

Apply piston wear (related part)

The TCC apply piston in the input shaft wears at the same time. Often replaced together.

Testing the TCC solenoid

Resistance test:

  • Disconnect connector
  • Probe the two solenoid pins
  • Spec: 10-30 ohms (varies by year)
  • Open circuit = failed coil
  • Shorted to ground = failed coil

Functional test:

  • Apply 12V momentarily — should click
  • No click = stuck pintle

Replacement procedure

Tools needed:

  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • T-27 Torx
  • Drain pan
  • Shop towels
  • New TCC solenoid (ACDelco or Borg-Warner)
  • New pan gasket

Steps:

1. Drain trans fluid (drop pan)

2. Remove pan and filter

3. Remove valve body bolts (typically 10mm)

4. Carefully lower valve body — keep checkballs in place

5. Remove TCC solenoid retaining clip

6. Pull old solenoid straight out

7. Lubricate new solenoid O-rings with ATF

8. Install new solenoid, retaining clip

9. Reinstall valve body torqued to spec (8-10 ft-lb)

10. New filter, pan gasket, refill

Time: 2-4 hours DIY

Cost:

  • ACDelco TCC solenoid: $40-80
  • Borg-Warner TCC solenoid: $30-60
  • Filter and gasket: $30-50
  • Fluid: $40-60
  • Total parts: $110-190

When to do more than just the solenoid

If you have the pan dropped, consider:

Full solenoid pack replacement

If the trans has 100K+ miles, replace all solenoids while you're in there. Labor is mostly the same.

Sonnax PR valve install

The pressure regulator valve is the other major 4L60E wear item.

Full rebuild consideration

If pan shows burnt fluid, gray sludge, or metal: solenoid fix is band-aid. Plan rebuild.

What if symptoms persist after replacement

Check:

  • TCC apply piston wear (input shaft)
  • Wiring harness damage
  • PCM grounds
  • 3-2 manual valve sticking

When it's really the apply piston:

  • Trans must come apart
  • Sonnax billet TCC apply piston ~$60-150
  • Worth doing during any 4L60E rebuild
