Transmission trouble codes (P-codes in the P0700-P0850 range) tell you exactly what's failing. Here's how to read them and what each common code means.

How to pull codes
Step 1: Locate OBD-II port
- Under dashboard, driver side
- Usually visible without tools
- Trapezoidal connector
Step 2: Connect scan tool
- Ignition ON, engine OFF
- Or engine running for some readings
Step 3: Navigate to codes
- "Read DTCs" or "Trouble Codes"
- Powertrain (P-codes) or specific module
Step 4: Record all codes
- Don't just look at first one
- Note all PCM and TCM codes
- Freeze frame data if available
Step 5: Don't clear immediately
- Document first
- Take photos of scan tool screen
- Repair before clearing
