How to Read Transmission Trouble Codes (P-Code Guide)

Transmission trouble codes (P-codes in the P0700-P0850 range) tell you exactly what's failing. Here's how to read them and what each common code means.

What you need

Tools:

  • OBD-II scan tool (basic OR advanced)
  • OR cheap reader ($30-100)
  • OR free app + Bluetooth dongle ($20)

Scan tool tiers:

  • Basic ($30-100): reads/clears codes
  • Mid ($150-400): live data, freeze frame
  • Pro ($400-1,500): all functions, bidirectional
  • OEM ($2,000+): full manufacturer functions

How to pull codes

Step 1: Locate OBD-II port

  • Under dashboard, driver side
  • Usually visible without tools
  • Trapezoidal connector

Step 2: Connect scan tool

  • Ignition ON, engine OFF
  • Or engine running for some readings

Step 3: Navigate to codes

  • "Read DTCs" or "Trouble Codes"
  • Powertrain (P-codes) or specific module

Step 4: Record all codes

  • Don't just look at first one
  • Note all PCM and TCM codes
  • Freeze frame data if available

Step 5: Don't clear immediately

  • Document first
  • Take photos of scan tool screen
  • Repair before clearing

Code structure

P-Code format:

  • P = Powertrain
  • 0/1 = Generic (0) or Manufacturer (1)
  • Number = Specific code

Trans-specific ranges:

  • P0700-P0729: TCM general
  • P0730-P0734: Gear ratio
  • P0740-P0743: TCC
  • P0750-P0784: Shift solenoids
  • P0790-P0795: Pressure switches
  • P0800-P0814: PRNDL switch
  • P0815-P0820: Shift up/down switch
  • P0840-P0850: Pressure/temp sensors

Common code meanings

P0700: TCM Request MIL

  • Generic "transmission has a problem"
  • Pull additional codes for specifics

P0717: Input Speed Sensor No Signal

P0722: Output Speed Sensor No Signal

  • OSS not communicating
  • Similar diagnosis

P0731: Gear Ratio 1st (incorrect)

P0732: Gear Ratio 2nd

  • Same concept for 2nd

P0733-P0735: Gear Ratio 3rd-5th

  • Per-gear slip detection

P0741: TCC Stuck Off

P0742: TCC Stuck On

  • TCC won't disengage
  • Engine stalls at stop

P0743: TCC Electrical

  • Wiring or solenoid coil

P0748: Force Motor Electrical (PWM)

P0750-P0758: Shift Solenoid A/B

P0775-P0779: Pressure Control B

P0846-P0848: Trans Fluid Pressure

P0860: TCM Communication

  • TCM-to-PCM communication

P1870: TCC Slip Excessive

What each code requires

Mild (single, intermittent):

  • Wiring check
  • Sensor replacement possibly
  • Cheap fix often

Moderate (multiple related codes):

  • Solenoid pack
  • Internal harness
  • $200-500 fix

Severe (gear ratio codes + slip):

Multi-code analysis

Several similar codes:

  • Pattern indicates single cause
  • E.g. multiple shift codes = solenoid pack failure

Many varied codes:

  • TCM electrical issue
  • Internal harness
  • Or pack-wide failure

Cascade pattern:

  • One sensor causes downstream codes
  • Read freeze frame to determine first cause

Live data interpretation

TCC commanded vs actual:

  • Mismatch = TCC issue

Force motor duty cycle:

  • Compare to pressure response
  • High duty + low pressure = pump or PR issue

Trans temp:

Vehicle speed vs OSS:

  • Should match
  • Mismatch = sensor issue

Clearing codes correctly

When to clear:

  • After repair completed
  • Verify code doesn't return
  • Allow drive cycle for verification

When NOT to clear:

  • Before diagnosis complete
  • Before repair finished
  • For inspection only

How:

  • Scan tool "Clear DTCs"
  • Sometimes need ignition cycle
  • Drive cycle to confirm

After repair: drive cycle

Standard verification:

  • Drive 10-15 miles
  • Multiple gear changes
  • Include cruise and stop-and-go
  • Allow trans to fully warm

Code returns?

  • Repair incomplete
  • Different issue
  • Check connections
