The 4L60E 2-4 band is responsible for 2nd and 4th gear engagement. When it wears or fails, you lose those gears or get harsh shifts. Here's the complete fix.
What the 2-4 band does
The 2-4 band wraps around the reverse input drum to provide the reaction surface for 2nd and 4th gear apply. The band is applied by a servo piston which uses hydraulic pressure to compress the band against the drum.
When working: clean apply, holding power for 2nd and 4th.
When failing: slip, flare, or no engagement in 2nd/4th.

Common 2-4 band failures
Band material wear:
Original friction material wears, band loses grip. Most common failure.
Band broken (severe):
Band breaks at high mileage or under abuse. Pieces in pan.
Servo apply piston wear:
Servo wears, can't apply band properly. Soft shifts.
Band servo seal failure:
Seals fail, pressure bypass. Slip on shift apply.
Symptoms
Early stage:
- Slip on 1-2 upshift
- Slight flare in 2nd
- Soft 3-4 shift
Mid stage:
- Clear slip in 2nd
- Possible flare in 4th
- Code P0731 or P0733
Late stage:
- No 2nd gear engagement
- No 4th gear
- Pan inspection shows band material

Replacement parts
Standard band:
- Quality OEM-equivalent: $30-60
- Acceptable for stock applications
HD band (Alto/Raybestos):
- Higher friction material
- Better holding capacity
- Cost: $60-120
- Recommended for HD/tow
Servo apply piston:
- New OEM piston: $30-50
- B&M HD servo: $80-150 (better apply force)
Servo seal kit:
- New seals always with band: $20-40
When to do HD upgrade
Stock applications:
- Standard band acceptable
- Service rebuild scope
HD/tow/performance:
- Mandatory HD band
- B&M HD servo recommended
- Better apply pressure = less wear

Installation considerations
Band adjustment:
- Some 4L60E need band adjustment, others auto-adjust
- Verify per year/service manual
Servo piston endplay:
- Critical to apply timing
- Selective shims available
- Set per spec
