What the 3-4 clutch does
The 3-4 clutch pack engages in overdrive (4th gear). It transfers engine power through the planetary set in the overdrive ratio (0.70:1). When this clutch slips, you lose 4th gear or get partial engagement.
Common failure modes
1. Friction material burn
Direct heat damage from slipping. Friction material breaks down, fluid turns brown/black.
2. Worn steels
Steel plates lose flatness. Heat warps them. Clutch can't grip properly.
3. Wave plate failure (some applications)
Wave plate distorts under heat, affects clutch apply timing.
4. Worn return spring
Return spring loses tension. Clutch may not release fully.
5. Burnt fluid
Old fluid breaks down. Lacks lubrication and cooling capacity for the 3-4 clutch.
Symptoms of 3-4 clutch failure
- No 4th gear (won't shift into overdrive)
- 4th gear slips (engages but slips under load)
- Flares on 3-4 shift
- High RPM at highway speed
- Eventually: complete loss of 4th
- Sometimes followed by other gear issues if heat damaged other components
