10L90 vs TH350: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two transmissions sit at opposite ends of fifty years of GM automatic development, and people compare them for one reason: they are trying to decide whether to keep a classic three-speed behind a build or step up to a modern ten-speed. One is a compact, hydraulically governed three-speed that will run without a single wire attached. The other is a computer-controlled ten-speed that will not move a vehicle at all if you unplug it. Picking wrong costs you either driveability or an entire wiring and controller project.
This is the head-to-head: real ratios, real torque numbers, how each one actually fails, and what to buy when it does.
The Spec Sheet, Side by Side
The TH350 is a three-speed with ratios of 2.52:1 first, 1.52:1 second, 1.00:1 third and 2.07:1 reverse, in a one-piece aluminum case with an integrated bellhousing, per DieselHub's TH350 specifications. The Novak Conversions guide to the TH350 puts the case at 21-3/4 inches long and roughly 120 pounds, introduced for the 1969 model year and phased out starting in 1982 as the 700R4 took over. Novak dates the end of production to 1984; DieselHub lists the unit as running through 1986. Either way, you are shopping a design that left the factory forty years ago.
The 10L90 is the heavy-duty member of the GM ten-speed family. Per the Ford-GM 10-speed automatic reference, the 10L80/10L90 gear set runs 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689 and 0.636, with a -4.866 reverse, built from four gearsets, two brakes and three clutches. Maximum input torque is listed at 900 N·m, or 664 lb-ft. The 10L90 MX0 variant shows up behind the 2017-2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6, and the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 from 2020 on. Sonnax describes the ten-speed family as running six clutch packs and four planetaries.
Run the math on the spread and the gap is obvious. The TH350 covers 2.52 down to 1.00, a 2.52 overall spread with no overdrive at all. The 10L90 covers 4.696 down to 0.636, a spread of roughly 7.4. That is the whole argument in one number: the ten-speed gives you a deeper launch gear and a double-overdrive cruise out of the same box.
Strength: The Honest Comparison
On paper, the 10L90's 664 lb-ft input rating is not a number the TH350 was ever engineered to see. But raw rating is not the whole story, because the two units fail in completely different ways and at completely different costs to repair.
The TH350 has a known structural weak point. DieselHub identifies the primary design flaw as excessive end play between the fluid pump and the center support structure, which allows the direct clutch drum to wobble. Sonnax's TH350 catalog reflects the same reality: it lists a rear-bearing shim (77406-10) specifically for excess endplay and driveline noise, alongside 1-2 accumulator sleeve and piston cover kits that address worn accumulator bores, low line pressure, 1-2 slip, delayed forward and delayed reverse engagement, intermediate clutch failure, and even a destroyed case. Under real load, Sonnax notes that racing a TH350 or TH350C puts huge stress on the OE intermediate overrun clutch outer race, and its heavy duty replacement (35723HD-02) is rated at twice the torque capacity of any OE or other aftermarket race.
The point: a TH350 is not weak so much as it is a unit with three or four specific, well-documented failure points, all of which have off-the-shelf fixes a competent builder installs during a normal rebuild.
How the 10L90 Fails
The ten-speed's problems are hydraulic and electronic rather than structural. Sonnax's shop-floor list of common ten-speed issues includes CDF drum sleeve movement, cylinder clutch container failure (also called stove pipe failure), main shaft plugs loosening, overheating with incorrect ATF level, and speed sensor issues. Inside the valve body, the valves worth inspecting are the main pressure regulator valve, the TCC priority valve, the TCC regulator valve and the boost valve, plus latch valves that get beaten up by their retainer clips. Loose or ripped impregnated filters on the separator plate come adrift and stick valves.
Sonnax also explains why pressure loss is the dominant complaint: wear on the sealing rings and hub bushings bleeds off charge pressure, which surfaces as lockup and overheat concerns. If you own a GM truck with a rattle from the bellhousing at idle, that is the additional dampener in the captive-clutch converter rattling on its pivot pins as those pins and levers wear, and the only solution Sonnax gives is replacing the dampener assembly.
Diagnosis Order for a Ten-Speed
- Check fluid level and type first. Sonnax calls out overheating with incorrect ATF level as a common cause, and specifies Dexron ULV or Mercon ULV. Universal or previously designed fluid will produce shift complaints and premature failure.
- Scan for ratio and clutch-slip codes. Ratio error codes point at clutch pack sealing, which is a drum and sealing-ring problem rather than a valve body problem.
- Air check the drums. Sonnax recommends air checking each drum through the pump before the assembly goes back into the case, which catches leaking clutch applies and leaking shaft plugs before you close it up.
- Inspect the separator plate and solenoids. Ten-speed valve bodies use casting-integrated direct-acting solenoids (CIDAS) held in with retainer clips. They work directly on the clutch control valve and only produce clutch pressure with current, which is why an unplugged ten-speed has no movement at all.
The Fix: What You Actually Buy
For a TH350, the answer is almost always a full overhaul rather than a partial repair. The unit is simple enough that the labor to open it dwarfs the parts cost, so you replace frictions, steels, the band, pump and case gaskets, the filter, sealing rings and bushings in one pass. For a 10L90, the repair splits in two. If the codes and symptoms point at clutch sealing and drum wear, you are into a 10L90 transmission rebuild kit. If the complaint is shift quality or a specific solenoid-circuit code with clean drums, the 10L90 10-piece shift solenoid kit is the smaller job. Sonnax notes that ten-speed solenoids rarely fail outright, so confirm the electrical fault before you buy the solenoid set.
Replace While You Are In There
- TH350: the intermediate overrun clutch outer race, the rear bearing shim to reset endplay, the pump bushing, the 1-2 accumulator sleeve if the bore is worn, and the governor components if shift points are wandering. Sonnax lists both a governor and a governor gear kit against that exact shift-concern complaint.
- 10L90: every sealing ring and hub bushing in the drum stack, the separator plate if the impregnated filters are lifting, and the converter dampener assembly if you have an idle rattle. Sonnax's CDF drum saver kit (129910-01K) targets the slipping, slide bumps, neutral conditions and ratio error codes that come from that drum.
- Both: filter, pan gasket, and a fresh torque converter if the old one contributed debris to the failure.
Cost and Effort Framing
A TH350 is one of the friendliest automatics to rebuild on a bench. It is a 120-pound, 21-3/4-inch, one-piece case with no electronics at all beyond the TH350C lockup circuit, and a careful first-time builder can do one over a weekend. Removal and installation in a typical rear-drive chassis runs a few hours each way. Special tooling is minimal, and parts availability is excellent because the design ran for well over a decade.
The 10L90 is the opposite. Six clutch packs and four planetaries mean a long, order-sensitive teardown, air checking is effectively mandatory, assembly detail and endplay matter more, and the unit will not function without a correctly configured controller. Realistically this is a professional rebuild or a reman exchange for most owners. Budget substantially more labor time, and a fluid spec you cannot substitute your way around.
Which One Should You Choose
Choose the TH350 when the vehicle is a classic rear-drive GM chassis with a carbureted or simply managed engine, you want the drivetrain to stay mechanical, and you value a short case plus cheap, universally available parts. The lack of overdrive is the one real penalty, and it is exactly why GM replaced it with the 700R4.
Choose the 10L90 when the vehicle already came with it, or when you are doing a modern engine swap that already brings GM electronic engine management with it. The 664 lb-ft rating, 4.696 first gear and 0.636 tenth gear are genuinely better in every performance and efficiency metric, and you pay for that with controller complexity and rebuild cost.

Will a 10L90 bolt in where a TH350 was?
Not as a drop-in. Beyond the physical differences, the 10L90 is fully electronic: Sonnax notes its casting-integrated direct-acting solenoids only produce clutch pressure with current, so a ten-speed has no movement when unplugged from its electrical source. A TH350 will drive with nothing plugged into it. Any swap in this direction requires a compatible controller as part of the project, not as an afterthought.
Can a TH350 handle a high-horsepower build?
With the right internals it holds up better than its reputation suggests, but the OE intermediate overrun clutch outer race is the documented stress point under racing loads. Sonnax's heavy duty race is rated at twice the torque capacity of the OE part, and controlling endplay at the pump and center support is the other thing you have to get right.
Why does my 10L90 rattle at idle?
