The 10L80 and the 10L90 are the same transmission wearing different clothes. Same four planetary gearsets, same six clutches, same ten ratios, same 260 mm converter, same fluid. What separates them is how much torque the internals were built to survive — and that single difference decides which one belongs behind your engine.

Here is what actually differs between the two GM ten-speeds, how to tell them apart in a salvage yard, and how to pick.

The shared architecture

Both units come from the same GM-Ford co-developed ten-speed family, and the design is genuinely clever. Per Chevrolet Performance's own installation documentation for the SuperMatic 10L90, the ten forward ratios are generated using four simple planetary gearsets, two brake clutches, and four rotating clutches. The four rotating clutches sit forward of the gearsets to shorten the oil feeds, which is what gives the unit its shift response.

Transmission Digest's teardown coverage of the platform adds the packaging story: a triple center clutch assembly is the key to the compact size, and during each gear change four clutch components are applied and only two released, which cuts drag and lets most clutch-to-clutch shifts happen faster. Gears one through six are underdriven, seventh is a straight 1:1, and eighth through tenth are overdriven.

The rest of the shared hardware list: a one-piece aluminum case with integral bell housing, an off-axis variable vane pump located in the valve body itself, an externally mounted TCM, three speed sensors, and a four-element torque converter. Transmission Digest notes the converter is 260 mm and that its clutch was moved to the front of the converter and curved to follow the impeller contour rather than sitting flat on the back cover. Lock-up is active in first gear.

On the electrical side, Transmission Digest counts eight to nine solenoids on the valve body depending on stop/start equipment: six normally-low linear shift solenoids, one normally-low variable force solenoid for TCC, and one normally-high variable force solenoid for line pressure.

Gear ratios: identical

This is the part people expect to differ, and it does not. Chevrolet Performance publishes the ratio table for the 10L90 as:

Chevrolet Performance describes the resulting spread as 7.39:1 overall with an aggressive 4.70 first gear and three overdrive gears. Transmission Repair Cost Guide lists the 10L80 with the same rounded set — 4.70 first through 0.64 tenth — plus a 4.87 reverse. If you were hoping the 10L90 gets you a different final drive or a deeper first, it does not. Gearing is not the reason to choose between them.

Where they actually differ: torque capacity

The 10L90 is the high-torque build of the same design. It uses a heavier-duty case, stronger clutch packs, and carries a higher torque rating than the 10L80. Chevrolet Performance rates its SuperMatic 10L90 crate unit — based on the production 10L90 from the 2017-2021 Camaro — at 650 lb-ft, and gives its weight as approximately 107.586 kg (237.19 lb).

The clutch pack is where that capacity lives. Raybestos Powertrain lists the 10L90 as having six clutches, A through F, and publishes friction plate counts for its GPZ performance clutch pack module: A three plates, B five, C six, D seven, E five, F four. Raybestos also notes that several of its clutch pack kits are shared between the 10L80 and 10L90 — the two units are close relatives, not different species.

Applications: which vehicles got which

The 10L80 is the volume unit. Transmission Repair Cost Guide lists production starting in 2017 with RPO code MF6, a 260 mm converter with electronically controlled capacity clutch, and applications including the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Camaro, Suburban, and Tahoe in both rear-drive and four-wheel-drive form. In practice it lives behind 5.3L V8s, standard 6.2L car engines, and the light-duty 3.0L Duramax.

The 10L90 goes behind the high-output stuff. Chevrolet Performance describes its SuperMatic version as based on the transmission offered in the Camaro SS ZL1 as well as the latest full-size trucks and SUVs, and identifies the donor as a 2017-2021 Camaro with RPO MI4. Beyond the ZL1 it shows up behind supercharged LT4 engines, the 6.6L L8T gas HD trucks, and commercial vans.

How to tell them apart at a salvage yard

They look nearly identical on a pallet. The fastest reliable check is the four-character broadcast code on the white barcode sticker — specifically the last two letters. Published salvage-yard references break it down this way: 10L80 codes end in KJ, GJ, FJ, or CJ; 10L90 codes end in MJ, NJ, PJ, or PM. So 1BKJ or 06CJ is a 10L80, while 8LPM or 10PJ is a 10L90. Confirm against the donor vehicle's RPO list before you pay for it, because the two share enough external hardware that a mislabeled core is easy to buy by accident.

Swap notes

A few practical points if you are putting one of these behind a crate engine or into an older chassis:

  • The TCM and calibration are matched to the unit. Chevrolet Performance is explicit that each controller is matched to the transmission and is not interchangeable, because every solenoid inside is characterized and that data is loaded into the controller. You cannot swap a controller between units and expect correct shifts.
  • Tail housing matters. The SuperMatic kit uses a slip-yoke rear housing borrowed from a 2018 Tahoe (RPO MF6) specifically so it works with the conventional prop shaft design in older vehicles. A factory Camaro 10L90 will not have that.
  • Fluid is not optional. Chevrolet Performance's caution is blunt: use DEXRON ULV only, and do not use DEXRON VI or DEXRON HP. It also notes the quart containers must be shaken to stir the additives before pouring.
  • There is no dipstick. A tube in the bottom pan sets the level, and the unit has an internal thermal bypass valve, so the level can only be checked after transmission fluid temperature reaches or exceeds 70°C (158°F). Chevrolet Performance calls for a TFT of 75-80°C (167-176°F) when setting the level, and the case plug torques to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
  • Capacities. Per Chevrolet Performance: pan removal and filter replacement about 7.7 liters (8.1 quarts), overhaul about 10.95 liters (11.6 quarts), complete system including cooler volume about 12.52 liters (13.23 quarts).

Which one should you choose?

Choose the 10L80 if the vehicle is stock or close to it — a 5.3L half-ton, a naturally aspirated 6.2L, a light-duty Duramax, a daily-driven Tahoe. It is the more common core, parts availability is better, and it does everything the 10L90 does at the ratios that matter.

Choose the 10L90 if you are adding power, especially forced induction, or towing heavily. The rule of thumb from builders who source these cores is straightforward: for anything pushing past roughly 500 lb-ft at the wheels, target a 10L90. The heavier case and stronger clutch packs are the entire point of the unit, and there is no calibration that makes a 10L80 clutch pack hold what a 10L90 clutch pack holds.

Cost and effort framing

A 10L90 core costs more than a 10L80 core and always will, because supply follows the vehicles they came in and there are far more 10L80s in the world. Factor that into the decision honestly: if you are never going past stock power, paying the 10L90 premium buys you margin you will not use. If you are supercharging an LT, the 10L90 premium is cheaper than a second rebuild.
