10L90 vs AW4: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two automatics almost never sit on the same shelf, but the question keeps coming up in build threads: the GM 10L90 is the ten-speed behind GM's biggest V8s, and the Aisin-Warner AW4 is the four-speed that made the Jeep XJ Cherokee famous for running forever. If you are planning a swap, buying a used truck, or deciding whether a tired unit is worth rebuilding, the honest answer comes down to torque capacity, gearing spread, and how each one is controlled.
Here is what the published specs actually say, what fails on each, and which one belongs in your build.
The short answer
Pick the 10L90 if you are behind a modern high-output V8 and you want the torque capacity and the highway gearing that comes with ten forward speeds. Pick the AW4 if you are building or keeping a 4.0L Jeep, where its light weight, simple electronic control, and long service life are the whole point. They are not cross-shopped in a factory vehicle, and neither one drops into the other's application without a full drivetrain and control-system plan.
Specs side by side
Per Action Transmission's 10L90 overview, the 10L90 runs a 4.70:1 first gear and a 0.64:1 tenth gear, with a torque capacity of roughly 715 lb-ft. That works out to about a 7.3:1 overall spread from the two published ratios. It arrived around 2017 and is found behind the supercharged 6.2L LT4 in the Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V, and behind the 6.2L V8 in Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trims.
The AW4 is a different animal. The Novak Guide to the Aisin-Warner AW4 lists gear ratios of 2.80, 1.53, 1.00 and 0.75 - about a 3.7:1 spread - and calls it a light to medium-duty transmission. It was used in the 1987-2001 Jeep XJ Cherokee and MJ Comanche, plus the 1993 ZJ Grand Cherokee with the six-cylinder only, primarily behind the AMC 4.0L (242 ci) I6 and the AMC 2.5 four. Novak notes the Jeep AW4 measures 25-3/8 inches long and uses a removable bellhousing with a port for the crank position sensor.
The AW4 comes out of Aisin's 03-72LE family. Gearboxlist's AW03-72LE data shows that family in production since 1986, rated for engines up to 3.0L and torque up to 260 Nm (roughly 192 lb-ft), filled with Dexron III or VI at about 7.7 liters. That torque figure is for the Suzuki-application 03-72LE rather than the Jeep-specific AW4, but it frames the class correctly: this is a unit designed around a mid-size six, not a supercharged V8.
How they are controlled - the real dividing line
Novak points out that the AW4 is an electronically controlled transmission and is therefore compatible only with the 4.0L engine and its PCM package. That single line kills most casual AW4 swaps: you are not just bolting up a case, you are bringing the Jeep's engine control strategy with it or building a standalone controller.
The 10L90 is far deeper into that same problem. It is a ten-speed with a large electro-hydraulic valve body and shift strategy that lives in the TCM. Action Transmission notes that many harsh or delayed shift complaints on the 10L90 are calibration-related rather than mechanical, and were addressed through updated TCM programming. Translation: on a modern ten-speed, software is a repair step, not an afterthought.
Known failure points on each
10L90: the feed limit low valve
This is the big one, and it is documented. Sonnax reports that the root cause of GM Safety Recall N242480630 is the feed limit low valve in 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 units, and that the OE control valve can fail in as little as 30,000 miles. Symptoms Sonnax lists for that valve include momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, a downshift to 2nd from high gear, harsh shifts, 5th-gear-only operation, a reduced propulsion message, and burnt clutches. Sonnax offers a drop-in kit (105740-54K) for minimal bore wear and an oversized kit (105740-59K) that requires reaming for severe wear, so the whole valve body does not have to be replaced.
The federal side matches. NHTSA campaign 24V797000 covers certain 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500, plus 2021 Escalade, Escalade ESV, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL diesel vehicles, stating the transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up; the remedy is new transmission control module software, with a special coverage program for transmissions the remedy software identifies as containing a defective control valve. A follow-up campaign, 26V083000 (GM number N252516560), covers vehicles that may have been repaired incorrectly under 24V797, with owner letters mailed March 6, 2026.

AW4: heat and parasitic loss
Novak is blunt about the AW4's two weaknesses: these transmissions "have a tendency to generate excessive amounts of heat" and are known for consuming more engine power than some other automatics. Heat is the practical one. On a stock XJ with a small factory cooler, a lifted rig on 33s in traffic is exactly the condition that cooks clutches and fluid. An auxiliary cooler and a disciplined fluid interval do more for AW4 life than any internal part.
Novak also flags a build detail worth knowing before you buy a used unit: the output shaft changed from 21 spline on early units to 23 spline on 1991 HO 4.0L and later. Match the spline count to your transfer case input or you will be shopping twice.
The fix: which part, and why
For a 10L90 with burnt clutch material in the pan, a P0747 history, or 5th-gear-only behavior, valve work alone is not enough - the friction material that already cooked has to come out. A full 10L90 transmission rebuild kit for 2018-2019 units gives you the frictions, steels, seals and gaskets in one box so the unit goes back together correctly rather than chasing one circuit at a time.
On the AW4 side, converter lockup complaints and torque-converter-clutch codes usually trace to the electrical control, not the converter itself. An AW4 TCC lock-up solenoid is the correct first part when the converter will not lock, and it is a fraction of the effort of pulling the unit. Replace while you are in there
- Filter and pan gasket - never reuse either on a unit that had debris in the pan.
- All external seals - front pump, output, and any shift shaft or manual lever seal.
- Cooler lines and cooler flush - debris left in the cooler comes straight back into a fresh build.
- 10L90 only: address the feed limit low valve bore while the valve body is out, and confirm the TCM has the current calibration before you call the job done.
- AW4 only: add or upgrade the auxiliary cooler, and verify the output shaft spline count matches your transfer case.
Cost and effort
An AW4 R&R in an XJ is one of the friendlier automatic jobs out there - roughly 5 to 7 hours for a competent DIYer with a lift or a good jack setup, and a solenoid-only repair is a fraction of that. The 10L90 is the opposite: a ten-speed teardown is a specialist job with tight clearance specs, a large valve body, and a required software step at the end. Budget a full day-plus of shop labor for R&R alone, and plan on a scan tool that can talk to the TCM. If you are not equipped for the calibration side, a 10L90 is not the right first automatic rebuild.
FAQ
Can I put a 10L90 behind a Jeep 4.0L?
Not practically. The AW4 is matched to the 4.0L PCM package, and the 10L90 needs its own TCM strategy and a driveline built for the ratio spread. This is a full standalone-controller project, not a bolt-in.
Is the 10L90 recall repair actually a fix?
NHTSA campaign 24V797000 lists new TCM software as the remedy, with coverage for transmissions the software flags as having a defective control valve. Campaign 26V083000 then covers vehicles repaired incorrectly under 24V797, so a truck with a completed recall is still worth re-checking against the newer campaign.
How much torque will an AW4 really hold?
Novak classifies it as light to medium-duty, and its 03-72LE family is published at roughly 260 Nm. Treat a stock 4.0L as the design point. If your build is well past that, you are shopping for a different transmission, not a stronger AW4 rebuild.
