The 10-speed family uses linear-force solenoids that physically push on the clutch regulating valves, which means a worn or weak solenoid does not just fail to shift — it mis-regulates clutch pressure, and the symptom that reaches the driver can be a flare, a bang, a code, a downshift nobody asked for, or a clutch that burns.

Here is what 10L90 shift solenoid symptoms actually look like, how to tell a solenoid problem from a valve bore problem, and what fixes each.

How the 10L90 actually controls its clutches

This matters because it explains every symptom on the list. Sonnax describes it plainly: the 10-speed family uses a linear-force-type solenoid with an individual pin that contacts the regulating valve to control valve position and clutch regulation. There is no separate solenoid feed circuit for the clutch regulating solenoids the way there is on a 6R80 or a ZF8. Clutch apply begins as the LFS solenoid moves the regulating valve behind it.

Two consequences follow. First, a solenoid that is off-spec does not produce a clean "no shift" — it produces the wrong apply pressure on one specific clutch, and the driver feels it as a shift quality complaint on the shifts that clutch is involved in. Second, because the solenoid pin is pushing directly on a valve, the solenoid can physically damage the bore. Sonnax's Gen. 2 valve body layout even lists a Clutch Control Valve Bore Sizing Tool (105740-BST) described as repairing bores damaged by solenoids.

Which generation you have changes the diagnosis. Per Sonnax, GM 10L60/80/90 Gen. 1 started in 2017; Gen. 2 started in 2019 with a default solenoid added along with a lower valve body. A Gen. 3 service valve body came into existence June 19, 2025 under two part numbers — 24071206 for 3.0L diesel and 24071207 for 5.3L and 6.2L gas GM trucks — fitting only ETRS models with electronic park control. On the Gen. 3, the TCC solenoid moved to the case side of the valve body and the default disable solenoid moved to the lower cover plate, which Sonnax says is the easiest way to identify it.

The symptoms, and what each one points at

Loss of shift solenoid control pressure

This is the headline solenoid symptom Sonnax names for the 10L60/80/90. In the Gen. 2 valve body layout, the published symptom set for the solenoid stabilization parts is loss of shift solenoid control pressure, poor shift quality, and various shift concerns, addressed with a Solenoid Stabilization Clip Insert (105740-01K) and a Solenoid Stabilization Retainer (105740-19K). What it feels like: shifts that are inconsistent rather than absent. Fine one minute, sloppy the next, worse when hot.

Momentary wheel lockup, P0747, and an unrequested downshift to 2nd

On Gen. 2 units this specific cluster has a named root cause. Sonnax lists the Feed Limit Low Valve Kit symptoms as momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, downshift to 2nd from high gear, and harsh shifts, and identifies the feed limit low valve in the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 as the root cause of GM Safety Recall N242480630 — stating the OE control valve can fail in as little as 30,000 miles, with limp mode after a software update among the symptoms.

Critically, this presents as a solenoid-family complaint but it is a valve wear problem. Sonnax's Gen. 3 write-up explains the mechanism: the redesigned default valve oil circuit prevents the wheel lockup scenario that occurs if solenoid feed to the default disable solenoid is low, which is what caused the condition on the Gen. 2 version. No shift, burnt clutches, clutch failure

Sonnax lists these as the published symptoms for the Gen. 2 feed limit high valve. Again: a hydraulic wear item producing what looks like a solenoid failure. If you have burnt a clutch and there is a shift solenoid code stored, the code may be the consequence rather than the cause.

Harsh shifts with high line pressure

On Gen. 2 10L80 and 10L90 units specifically, Sonnax lists an LPC signal damper piston kit (105740-05K) for harsh shifts and high line pressure. Line pressure control that is not being damped properly produces a hard, abrupt shift feel that no amount of adapt resetting will smooth out.

Generic shift solenoid performance codes

Codes in the shift solenoid performance family — a "performance / stuck off" code such as P0756 — are set when the control module detects a malfunction in that solenoid circuit. The commonly published symptom list for those codes includes transmission slipping, overheating, being stuck in gear, decreased fuel economy, limp mode and a check engine light; the commonly published causes include low or dirty transmission fluid, a clogged transmission fluid filter, a failed shift solenoid, TCM failure, and damaged connectors or faulty wiring. The important caveat is that the code does not automatically mean the solenoid is faulty — test before replacing.

Diagnosis order

  1. Fluid level, condition and spec. Sonnax states these units require DEXRON ULV or MERCON ULV specifically, and that using universal or previously designed fluid will result in shift complaints and premature failure. Low or dirty fluid is also the leading published cause of shift solenoid performance codes. Rule it out first, every time.
  2. Scan and record every code, not just the transmission ones. Multiple simultaneous solenoid codes usually point at a common cause — fluid, power/ground, or the control module — rather than several solenoids failing at once.
  3. Check the VIN against open GM recalls on any 2019-or-later Gen. 2 unit. The feed limit low valve is a named recall root cause with published solenoid-like symptoms.
  4. Identify the generation before ordering anything. Gen. 1, Gen. 2 and Gen. 3 valve bodies have different solenoid locations and different valve trains. Sonnax specifically warns to verify valve body fitment with the VIN.
  5. Vacuum test the valve body. This is the step that separates a genuine solenoid failure from bore wear producing solenoid symptoms. The fix: which part, and when

If the valve body passes vacuum testing, the bores are clean, and the fluid and wiring check out, the solenoids themselves are the answer. On a unit with this many clutch circuits, replacing them as a set is the sane approach — chasing one at a time on a transmission that has to come apart to reach them is a false economy.

Replace while you're in there

The realistic effort split looks like this. Confirming fluid spec and level, pulling codes and checking recalls is an hour and costs almost nothing — and it resolves a meaningful share of these complaints outright. Vacuum testing requires the valve body out and a vacuum test setup, which is shop work but avoids buying parts you do not need. Replacing solenoids means the valve body comes out regardless, so the labor is the same whether you replace one or all of them — which is the argument for doing the set.

The expensive path is the one where solenoids get thrown at a worn feed limit valve or a damaged bore, the symptom comes back in a few thousand miles, and the valve body ends up out again anyway. Diagnose in the order above and that does not happen.
