The short version

  • Choose the 10L90 if the vehicle came with one. It is a modern high-torque unit and there is no sane path to replacing it with anything older without giving up drivability, emissions compliance, and the electronics that control it.
  • Choose the AODE if you already have one in a 1992-1995 Ford and you want a repairable, cheap-to-service, fully understood four-speed. It is the last generation of Ford overdrive automatic that a competent DIY builder can go through on a bench with hand tools.

Gear ratios and spread

This is the single most important thing to know about a GM 10-speed. Sonnax documents that in March 2025 GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 transmissions for a "Momentary Wheel Lock-up" condition at higher speeds, which can also include a sudden downshift back into 2nd gear.

The root cause, per Sonnax's teardown analysis, is wear at the feed limit low valve in the valve body. That valve limits solenoid feed to the default disable (DD) solenoid. When the valve bore wears, feed pressure to the DD solenoid drops, the default enable and default select valves lose position control, and the transmission can drop to a lower gear or bind up. Sonnax reports the complaint typically shows up shifting into 7th or 8th, and that on 10L1000 units seeing tow or trailer duty the low limit valve has worn out in as few as 35,000 miles. The associated trouble code is P0747.

Two diagnostic notes worth their weight in gold, both from that same Sonnax analysis: the unit will usually behave normally until it is hot, so let it cool and see if the symptom disappears; and continued driving in that condition will destroy clutch packs, because the wear causes intermittent bindup. Do not "drive it until it gets worse."

Kit 76948-04K uses a single .030" orifice sleeve and produces a firmer, quicker lockup feel; Sonnax notes it can create a more pronounced lockup engagement compared to the OE valve. Kit 76948-64K uses four .063" orifices to mimic the OE hydraulic design and match OE apply timing, which Sonnax says is particularly beneficial on '96-later applications where engine lugging and harsh TCC apply can occur if the OE calibration is not observed. Both are drop-in repairs that require no reaming. Pick 04K if you want a firmer lockup on an earlier unit; pick 64K if you want stock feel with no modification.

The second AODE pattern failure is the overdrive servo pin wearing the case bore. Can I swap a 10L90 into a car that came with an AODE?
Not practically.
