If you have an older Ford with a 4-speed automatic, it's an AOD, AODE, or 4R70W. They're related but distinct. Here's the evolution.
Timeline
AOD (1980-1991)
- First Ford 4-speed overdrive automatic

- Found in: Mustangs, Crown Vics, F-150s, full-size cars
AODE (1991-1995)
- Electronic version of AOD
- Adds electronic control
- TCM required
- Similar capacity to AOD
- Bridge to 4R70W
4R70W (1993-2008)
- Wider gear case
- Strengthened internals
- Electronic control
- ~360 ft-lb stock capacity
- Found in: Mustangs, F-150s, Crown Vics, Lincoln Town Cars

Key differences
Control:
- AOD: Hydraulic/mechanical
- AODE: Electronic
- 4R70W: Electronic
Strength:
- AOD: ~250 ft-lb
- AODE: ~280 ft-lb
- 4R70W: ~360 ft-lb
- 4R75W: ~430+ ft-lb
Parts interchange:
- Many internal parts interchange between generations
- Hard parts often different
- Solenoids and electronics not interchangeable
How to identify yours
Year-based:
- 1980-1990 Ford with automatic = AOD
- 1991 Mustang/Crown Vic = AOD or AODE (transition)
- 1992+ Mustang = AODE (some) or 4R70W (later)
- 1993+ F-150 = AODE or 4R70W
- 2003+ HD applications = 4R70W or 4R75W
Physical identification:
- Trans pan: 17-bolt pan typical for AOD/AODE
- Trans pan: 20-bolt pan typical for 4R70W
- Case shape: 4R70W is "wider" — different proportions
When to upgrade
AOD to AODE/4R70W:
- Want electronic control
- Need more capacity
- Mustang owners doing engine swap
- Common upgrade for performance
AODE to 4R70W:
- Need more capacity
- Most parts interchange
- Same control electronics largely

Common failures
AOD:
- Direct clutch wear
- Forward band failure
- TV cable adjustment critical (factory shell crack often related to wrong TV setting)

- Solenoid issues
- Direct clutch wear
- TCM communication
4R70W:
