6R80 / 10R80 Ford Transmission Guide: F-150 and Mustang

The 6R80 (six-speed) and 10R80 (ten-speed) are Ford's modern automatics. Found in F-150, Mustang, Expedition, and others. Both are stout designs but have specific failure patterns. Here's what you need to know.

6R80 basics

  • 6-speed automatic
  • Years: 2009-2017 production
  • Applications: F-150, Mustang, F-250 (some), Expedition, Lincoln Navigator
  • Torque capacity: ~600 ft-lb stock
  • ZF design: Made by ZF (Germany)
  • Weight: ~185 lbs

10R80 basics

  • 10-speed automatic
  • Years: 2017+ production
  • Applications: F-150, Mustang, F-250 (some), Expedition, Mustang Mach 1
  • Torque capacity: ~800 ft-lb stock
  • Co-designed: GM 10L80 shares architecture
  • Weight: ~210 lbs

6R80 common failures

1. Direct clutch wear

The direct clutch is high-stress and wears predictably.

Fix: HD direct clutch during rebuild.

2. C clutch (overdrive) wear

Overdrive clutch sees high stress in highway tow.

Fix: HD C clutch pack.

3. Solenoid pack failure

Internal solenoid pack fails at 80-150K miles.

Fix: OEM or quality replacement solenoid pack.

4. TCC apply piston wear

Same family of issues as other automatic transmissions.

Fix: TCC apply piston replacement during rebuild.

5. Pump bushing wear

Standard high-mileage wear item.

Fix: Pump bushing kit during rebuild.

6. Valve body bore wear

Aluminum bore wear over time.

Fix: Bore correction kits if available, or valve body replacement.

7. TCM software issues

Some 6R80s have shift quality issues from TCM software. Updates available from Ford.

10R80 common failures

1. Solenoid pack failure

The 10R80 has more solenoids than 6R80. Failure modes similar but more components.

Fix: OEM replacement solenoid pack.

2. Direct clutch wear

Highest-wear clutch in 10R80.

Fix: HD direct clutch during rebuild.

3. C2 clutch wear

Similar wear pattern to 6R80 C clutch.

Fix: HD C2 clutch pack.

4. Valve body wear

Complex valve body. Multiple wear points possible.

Fix: Sonnax bore correction kits (limited availability for 10R80).

5. Internal seal failures

At higher mileage, seal failures cause cross-contamination of fluid passages.

Fix: Full rebuild with seal kit.

6. Pump wear

Heavy-duty pump but still wears.

Fix: Pump rebuild during major service.

7. Park failure

Some 10R80s have park sprag / detent issues.

Fix: Component replacement or rebuild.
