10L90 vs 10R80: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two ten-speeds came out of the same GM-Ford joint development program, share a case footprint, and even share a valve body layout - yet they carry different torque ratings, different fluid, and different failure histories. If you are picking a unit for a swap, buying a core, or trying to work out which parts cross over during a rebuild, the differences that matter are not the ones on the badge.
Here is what actually separates GM's 10L90 from Ford's 10R80, backed by published specs and shop-floor diagnostic data.
Gear ratios: nearly identical, and that is the point
Both units run ten forward speeds off the same basic four-planetary, six-clutch architecture. The published ratios are close enough that you can treat them as the same gearbox on paper.
Per GearboxList, the GM 10L90 runs 4.696 in 1st, then 2.985, 2.146, 1.800, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000 in 7th (direct), 0.854, 0.689, and 0.636 in 10th, with a 4.886 reverse. That works out to a 7.38:1 overall spread.
The Ford 10R80, per F150Hub, runs 4.69, 2.98, 2.14, 1.76, 1.52, 1.27, 1.00, 0.85, 0.68, 0.63, and a 4.86 reverse. Three overdrive gears, direct drive in 7th, same story.
The takeaway: neither unit gives you a gearing advantage over the other. What differs is what is holding those ratios together and what the controller is asking of them.
Torque rating: this is the real split
The Ford 10R80 is published at 800 N-m nominal maximum input torque - roughly 590 lb-ft - and that same 800 N-m figure is what DieselHub lists for the mechanically identical GM 10L80.
The 10L90 is the heavy-duty member of the family. GearboxList lists it at up to 900 N-m, which is where GM's high-output applications live. That extra headroom is the entire reason the 10L90 exists alongside the 10L80: same architecture, more clutch capacity behind it.
So if the question is purely "which one is stronger," the 10L90 is the stronger published unit. If the question is "which one will survive behind my engine," read the failure sections below, because both units fail for reasons that have nothing to do with their torque rating.
Fluid, weight, and service specs
This is where guessing gets expensive. Both units use an ultra-low-viscosity ATF, but they are not the same fluid and they are not interchangeable by convenience.
- 10L90: DEXRON ULV. Total capacity 12.3 liters, partial (drain-and-fill) volume 5.0 liters. Unit weight roughly 105 kg. (GearboxList)
- 10R80: MERCON ULV, Motorcraft part XT-12-QULV. Capacity 13 U.S. quarts. Weight roughly 235 lb in rear-drive form, 230 lb in four-wheel-drive form. (F150Hub)
DieselHub confirms both share an aluminum case, a 260 mm torque converter, and a normal operating temperature window of 206 to 215 degrees F (96 to 101 C). F150Hub lists Ford's fluid and filter service interval at 150,000 miles - a "lifetime fill" that in practice is why so many of these units arrive in shops with cooked fluid.
DieselHub also notes the manufacturing split: Ford builds the 10R80 in Livonia, Michigan; GM builds its version in Romulus, Michigan.
What actually interchanges
Here is the fact that surprises most people. Sonnax publishes a single valve body drop-in Zip Valve package, part number 10L80-G1-10R80-ZIP, that covers the Ford 10R60 and 10R80 alongside the GM 10L60, 10L80, and 10L90 (Gen. 1) - documented in the Sonnax vacuum test guide for that family. One valve body layout, one set of critical wear areas, both brands.
DieselHub describes the Ford and GM versions as physically identical, with the differences living in the electronics and controls integrated into each manufacturer's powertrain, plus the fluid specification and the badge.
What that means in practice: hard parts and valve body repair components frequently cross the brand line, but calibration, the TCM, and the fluid do not. Do not plan a swap around "it bolts up." Known failure points: the 10R80 side
Sonnax technical communication specialist Jim Mobley lists the recurring ten-speed failures his group sees across the Ford 10R60, 10R80, 10R140 and the GM 10L60, 10L80, and 10L90: CDF drum sleeve movement, cylinder clutch container failure (known in shops as "stove pipe failure"), main shaft plugs loosening, overheating from incorrect ATF level, speed sensor issues, and incorrect assembly during repair.
The CDF drum is the headline item. When the drum sleeve shifts rearward it exposes fluid ports from behind the sleeve, producing bump slides, neutral shifts, slide shifts, and loss of 2nd gear. Sonnax makes the point that this is a consequence, not a cause: drum sleeve movement and sealing ring damage come from shift issues, not from the valve body itself. Their CDF drum saver kit 129910-01K uses a stepped sleeve plus a set screw to stop the sleeve migrating and rotating. Ten-speed valve bodies use casting-integrated, direct-acting solenoids (CIDAS) held in with retainer clips. Because these solenoids act directly on the clutch control valves and only produce clutch pressure with current applied, a ten-speed has no movement at all when unplugged from the electrical source - a useful diagnostic fact. Sonnax reports solenoids rarely fail outright, but the main pressure regulator valve, TCC priority valve, TCC regulator valve, boost valve, and latch valves all wear.
Known failure points: the 10L90 side
The GM side carries one issue the Ford units do not. In March 2025, GM issued Safety Recall N242480630 covering the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80, and 10L90, per Sonnax TASC Force member Jim Dial's breakdown of the recall. The complaint is a momentary wheel lock-up at higher speeds, sometimes with a downshift back to 2nd gear.
The root cause is wear in the feed limit low valve. That valve limits solenoid feed to the default disable (DD) solenoid, which in turn controls the default enable and default select valves. When the valve bore wears and solenoid feed pressure drops, those two default valves can send the transmission to a lower gear or create a bind-up, depending on what gear is commanded. Sonnax notes the associated code is P0747 - the "E" clutch is on when it should be off.
Two diagnostic tells worth knowing: the fault is heat-dependent, so the unit usually behaves normally cold and misbehaves hot; and on the related 10L1000, Sonnax has seen this valve wear out in as few as 35,000 miles on tow trucks and heavy-trailer vehicles. The recall software puts the transmission into 5th gear and lights the check engine lamp when the TCM detects bore wear - a limp-home safeguard, not a repair. Sonnax's warning is blunt: extended driving in that condition will destroy clutch packs. Their feed limit low valve kit is 105740-54K, with 105740-58K covering the high valve.
GearboxList also notes early 10L90 production complaints of jerking, jolting, and abrupt shifts addressed by firmware updates; a transmission whine traced to oil pump gear misalignment; and a weak plastic oil pan for which an aluminum replacement is available.
The fix: which parts to buy
If you are rebuilding a 10L90, you are into the clutch packs, drums, and seals - and the reason people open these units (heat, contaminated ULV, drum sleeve migration) means going back in with fresh frictions and a complete seal set rather than chasing one component.
For the parts most often replaced on each side:
- 10L90 full teardown: the 10L90 rebuild kit for 2017-up units, or browse the full rebuild kit collection to match your year range.
- 10L90 shift quality and codes: a 10L90 six-piece shift solenoid kit, or the wider solenoid collection if you need a different configuration.
- 10R80 service and overheating prevention: a 10R80 transmission filter for 2017-2024. Given the 150,000-mile factory interval, this is the single cheapest thing you can do for a high-mile ten-speed.
Replace while you are in there
If the unit is out and apart, these items cost far less now than as a second job later:
- Complete gasket and seal set, including the steel-rubber pump seal that sits between the valve body and case. Sonnax specifically flags this one: leaving it out or mispositioning it causes no movement and no line pressure.
- Filter and a full ULV fill in the correct spec - DEXRON ULV for the 10L90, MERCON ULV for the 10R80.
- CDF drum sealing rings, or the drum saver sleeve if the drum shows any sleeve movement.
- Separator plate inspection. Sonnax notes the impregnated plate filters come loose and displace, which sticks valves.
- Solenoid retainer clips - Sonnax offers stabilization retainers (105740-19K) to hold the heavy CIDAS solenoids and prevent spring retainer collapse.
Cost and effort
Neither of these is a driveway afternoon. A valve body service is the accessible job - pan down, filter and fluid out, valve body off - and it is where most shift-quality complaints get resolved. A CDF drum repair or a clutch pack rebuild means the transmission comes out of the vehicle and gets torn down on a bench, which is a full-day-plus job for an experienced rebuilder and realistically a shop job for everyone else.
Budget for the fluid either way. Twelve to thirteen quarts of ULV is a real line item, and it is not optional - both manufacturers spec ULV because these units use fluid viscosity as part of their efficiency strategy, and substituting a conventional ATF changes shift behavior.
Which one should you choose?
If you are choosing between cores or planning a swap:
Choose the 10L90 if you need the higher published torque rating (up to 900 N-m versus 800 N-m) and you are on the GM side of the fence for controls and calibration. Just go in knowing about recall N242480630 and the feed limit low valve on Gen. 2 units, and verify the recall status of any core you buy.
Choose the 10R80 if you are in a Ford chassis, where the calibration, TCM, and fluid spec are already correct and parts availability at the service level is broad. The 800 N-m rating covers the great majority of street and tow applications.
What you should not do is choose one on the assumption that swapping brands buys you reliability. Both units share the same CDF drum weakness, the same valve body wear areas, and the same intolerance for wrong or overheated fluid. The unit that lasts is the one that gets the right ULV, gets it changed, and gets its valve body wear addressed before the clutches pay for it.
FAQ
Can I put a 10L90 in place of a 10R80?
Mechanically the two are close relatives - DieselHub describes the Ford and GM versions as physically identical, and Sonnax sells one valve body kit covering both families. But the electronics and controls are integrated into each manufacturer's own powertrain, so a cross-brand swap is a controls and calibration project, not a bolt-in.
What does code P0747 mean on a 10L90?
Per Sonnax, P0747 indicates the "E" clutch is on when it should be off. On Gen. 2 GM ten-speeds this points at feed limit low valve bore wear reducing solenoid feed pressure to the default disable solenoid. It typically shows up hot and can be accompanied by a drop to 2nd gear from 7th or 8th.
My 10-speed will not move at all after a valve body job. What did I miss?
Check the steel-rubber pump seal between the valve body and the case. Sonnax reports this being left out or mispositioned regularly, and the result is exactly that: no movement and no line pressure. Also note that these units produce no clutch pressure at all when the solenoids are unplugged, since the CIDAS solenoids only apply clutches with current.
Why does my rebuilt ten-speed shift harshly for a day and then settle down?
Before you condemn the valve body, check the battery. Sonnax reports that failing batteries on 10R80 and 10R140 work trucks produce harsh engagements and erratic up and downshifts that improve as the vehicle warms and drives, and notes that batteries in both Fords and GMs typically last about three years.
