10L90 vs 46RE: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two automatics get compared for one practical reason: they both live behind a V8 in a rear-drive American truck or performance car, and both end up on a shop bench for the same kind of complaint — a shift that shows up late, harsh, or not at all. Beyond that, they have almost nothing in common. The GM 10L90 is a modern ten-speed, clutch-to-clutch, computer-shifted unit. The Chrysler 46RE is a 1990s four-speed built on a design that dates back to the TorqueFlite era. If you are cross-shopping trucks, planning a swap, or trying to decide whether the unit in front of you is worth rebuilding, the differences below are the ones that actually change your decision.
The short answer
Pick the 10L90 if you want the widest ratio spread, the lowest cruising RPM, and factory power handling for a modern high-output V8 — and you accept that repairs mean valve body work, scan-tool diagnosis, and current recall history. Pick the 46RE if you want a simple, cheap-to-rebuild four-speed for an older Ram, Dakota, Durango, or Grand Cherokee, and you can live with a 3.5:1 overall spread and a governor pressure system that is the single most common source of shift complaints on the unit.
Side by side: what the numbers actually say
The 10L90 carries ten forward ratios: 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.769, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689 and 0.632, with a 4.866 reverse, for a total ratio span of 7.386, according to the Ford–GM 10-speed technical summary. That same reference lists the 10L90's maximum input torque as 900 N·m (664 lb-ft) and describes the gear train as four gearsets with two brakes and three clutches. Applications for the MX0 10L90 include the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (2017–2024), Cadillac CT6 (2019–2020), and Cadillac CT4 and CT5 (2020 and later).
The 46RE runs four speeds: 2.45 first, 1.45 second, 1.00 third, and a 0.69 overdrive, with a 2.35 reverse, per the TorqueFlite reference. That works out to roughly a 3.5:1 overall spread — less than half the 10L90's range. The same source describes the A518 family (of which the 46RE is the electronically governed member) as an A727 derivative with an overdrive unit added, in service from 1990, in Dodge Ram 150/250/350 pickups, Ramcharger (1988–1993), Dakota (1995–2003), Durango (1998–2003), and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The heavier-duty 47RE in the same family is listed at a 450 lb-ft rating with steel planetary carriers and added clutch plates, and the 48RE arrived for 2004 with a higher-volume pump and a larger direct drum.
Two things fall out of that comparison. First, the 10L90's 4.696 first gear plus a 0.632 top gear means it can run a numerically deeper axle for launch without punishing highway RPM — the 46RE cannot do both. Second, the 46RE's advantage is not capability, it is simplicity: fewer clutches, fewer solenoids, a shift strategy that is largely hydraulic with electronic governor pressure control layered on top.
Where each one actually fails
10L90: the feed limit low valve
Sonnax identifies the feed limit low valve as the root cause behind GM Safety Recall N242480630, affecting the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 transmissions. Their tech bulletin states the OE control valve can fail in as little as 30,000 miles, with symptoms including sudden wheel lockup, code P0747, limp mode after a software update, a downshift to 2nd from a high gear, harsh shifts, 5th-gear-only operation, a reduced propulsion message, and burnt clutches. Sonnax addresses the bore and valve wear with a drop-in kit (105740-54K) or an oversized kit requiring reaming (105740-59K) rather than replacing the whole valve body.
The federal side confirms the severity. NHTSA campaign 24V797000 covers certain 2020–2022 Silverado 1500/2500/3500 and Sierra 1500/2500/3500, plus 2021 Escalade, Escalade ESV, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL models with diesel engines, and states plainly that the transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock up. A follow-up campaign, 26V083000, covers vehicles that were repaired incorrectly under the first recall. If you are shopping a used 10-speed truck, that VIN check is not optional.
46RE: governor pressure, every time
On the 46RE, the shift complaint is almost always a governor pressure problem before it is a hard-part problem. Sonnax notes that bore wear creates a loss of governor pressure, which changes shift timing with operating temperature and typically produces a shuttle or a late shift — and that when the leak is combined with governor solenoid and transducer feedback, the electronics are often too slow to compensate for the oil loss. That is exactly why a 46RE will shift acceptably cold and then start hanging gears once it is up to temperature.
The fix, and what to replace while you are in there
For a 46RE with late or wandering shifts, the pan-off service is the governor pressure solenoid and transducer together, with a fresh filter and pan gasket. Doing the solenoid alone and reusing a marginal transducer is the most common repeat-repair on this unit.
Replace while the pan is down: governor pressure solenoid, governor pressure transducer, filter, pan gasket, and the pan magnet cleaned. If the unit already has a burnt-clutch smell or debris in the pan, stop parts-swapping and go to a full overhaul with a rebuild kit instead — a new solenoid will not fix cooked frictions.
One identification step matters before you order a 46RE valve body or reman unit. Sonnax's identification guide says you must determine both the pressure sensor type and the pump inlet size: the early sensor ('99 and earlier) has an oval electrical connector, while the late sensor ('00 and later) is plastic and rectangular, and the pump inlet comes in small and large versions. Their reman valve body part numbers split on exactly those two variables (CHR129 through CHR132). Get the year and the sensor style right or the part will not interchange.
For a 10L90, the equivalent decision is different. Because the failure is a wear-in-the-bore problem in the valve body rather than a wear item you swap at a service interval, the honest path on a high-mileage unit is a full teardown with a 10L90 rebuild kit plus a valve body addressed for the feed limit low valve. Replace the frictions, steels, and all bonded pistons and seals while it is apart; the clutch damage Sonnax lists as a symptom means the control problem has usually already taken frictions with it. Cost and effort framing
The 46RE governor solenoid and transducer service is a pan-off, in-vehicle job. A competent DIYer with a lift or good stands can do it in an afternoon; shop labor typically runs a couple of hours plus fluid. It is the cheapest meaningful repair on the unit and the correct first move for a temperature-sensitive shift complaint.
A 46RE full overhaul is a mid-difficulty rebuild — a well-documented, parts-available unit with no special electronics. A 10L90 overhaul is not a first rebuild. Ten forward ratios, four gearsets, six apply devices, tight clutch clearances and a valve body that must be measured rather than eyeballed put it firmly in experienced-builder territory, and the unit has to come out of the vehicle either way. Budget the removal labor honestly before you decide between repair and replacement.

Can a 10L90 bolt in place of a 46RE?
Not as a drop-in. They are different manufacturers, different bellhousing patterns, different lengths, different crossmember and driveshaft geometry, and the 10L90 requires GM electronic control to shift at all. Treat it as a full custom swap with a standalone controller, not an upgrade path.
Is the 46RE stronger than the 10L90?
