46RE vs 48RE: Differences, Identification, and What Actually Interchanges

You have a Dodge or Ram four-speed in front of you, the tag is gone, and you need parts. The 46RE and 48RE look close enough that people order the wrong valve body every day. That mistake does not announce itself on the test drive. It shows up a few thousand miles later as a burned torque converter clutch or overdrive clutch. Here is what separates the two, how to identify them, and which parts cross over.

The short version: which one do you have?

Both belong to Chrysler's TorqueFlite RH/RE family. Per Sonnax, the 46RE arrived around 1996, when Dodge added a valve train near the pressure regulator to raise pressure in lockup and 4th gear for the higher-torque engines of that era. The 48RE went into production in 2003.

Gas half-ton means 46RE. A 2003-and-later Cummins means 48RE. The trouble starts with cores of unknown history, and with valve bodies somebody already swapped once.

The real difference is hydraulic, not external

Sonnax technical specialist Jim Dial documented this, and the same article ran in Transmission Digest. It comes down to two things: the pressure curve at the pressure regulator valve, and the torque converter clutch solenoid feed circuit.

Line pressure rise in lockup and 4th gear

The TorqueFlite pressure regulator works backwards from most designs. It has reduction points that push the valve toward lower line pressure, and throttle pressure works against them to raise it.

On a 46RE/47RE, in 1st through 3rd with the converter clutch off, four reduction points (A, B, C and D) oppose the throttle valve. In 3rd with lockup on, or in 4th, pressure from the TC apply or overdrive apply circuit moves the boost valve and exhausts reduction point D only. Sonnax states line pressure then rises approximately 10 to 15 psi.

On a 48RE, the same boost valve movement exhausts two reduction points, A and D, which Sonnax states raises line pressure approximately 22 to 28 psi. With no reducing pressure at point A, the throttle pressure plug also raises pressure at a quicker rate.

That is the whole story behind the failures. The 48RE gear train and clutch packs were built expecting that clamping force. Put a 46/47RE valve body under one and the converter clutch and overdrive clutch never see the pressure they were designed around.

The TCC solenoid feed circuit

On the 46/47RE, TCC solenoid feed comes from the 1-2 shift valve, and a passage from the manual valve in Manual 2 or Manual 1 connects to the spring side of the lockup valve, cancelling lockup. On the 48RE, feed comes from the manual valve in any Drive position, and that Manual 2/1 connection is gone. Converter clutch apply is therefore possible in Manual 2nd and even Manual 1st, which is what a loaded tow rig wants at low engine speed. Sonnax notes Manual 1st apply must be commanded by an external controller.

How to identify the valve body on the bench

Per the Sonnax 48RE identification guide, 48RE valve bodies have a closed casting in the identifying location, so the spring is not visible. That alone is not conclusive: Sonnax warns some 47REs are also closed. The tiebreaker is the large separator plate ID number, 27 for the unit matching the CHR135 converted valve body, plus channel plate part number 52854129AA.

For 42/46/47RE electronic valve bodies, Sonnax's chart turns on two features: pressure sensor type and pump inlet size. The early sensor has an oval electrical connector; the late sensor is plastic and rectangular, at a 1999-and-earlier versus 2000-and-later break. That is why our 46RE listings split by year: the 1996-1999 46RE valve body and the 2002-up version with push-in neutral switch are not the same part.

What interchanges, and what costs you a converter

Sonnax is direct: many have tried to interchange a 46/47RE valve body with a 48RE, and it seems to work at first, but the vehicle comes back with a failed torque converter clutch or overdrive clutch. Salvageable 48RE cores are hard to find, which is why the substitution keeps happening.

The service parts are not one list either. Compare the two Sonnax vacuum test guides and the pressure regulator valve replacements differ by family: 22771-03K or 22771-04K for 46RE/46RH/47RE/47RH, 22771A-02K or 22771A-16K for 48RE. The drop-in Zip Valve kits are separate families too, 46-47RHE-ZIP versus 48RE-ZIP. Cases and much of the hard-part design carry over; the hydraulics do not.

Diagnosis before you buy anything

Both Sonnax vacuum test guides map symptoms to specific worn valves:

  • Delayed engagement, pressure regulator buzz, lube failures, converter bushing failure - pressure regulator valve.
  • Lockup shudder, overheated converter, low or no cooler flow in Park, soft TCC apply - 4-spool switch valve. The 46RE guide adds forward clutch drags in Park.
  • 1-2 shuttle, oversensitive 2-3 and 3-2, early upshifts - governor plugs, tested together.
  • Throttle buzz, poor kickdown, late 2-3 - throttle valve.
  • TCC slip under load, no line rise during TCC apply in 4th - lockup boost valve (48RE guide).
  • Reverse slip, poor cooler charge at idle - line pressure plug and sleeve.

The stuck-in-Park and TTVA trap on the 48RE

Sonnax's Randall Schroeder documents a wear pattern specific to later RH/RE units. The redesigned Park/Neutral switch, now called a MUX or neutral safety switch, adds spring tension that pushes the manual shaft sideways against the rooster comb, and the case manual shaft bore wears from a circle into an oval. Sonnax lists the consequences as shift cable binding, stuck in Park, wear at the shift detent ball and spring pocket, and 48RE TTVA codes from the TV rod binding inside the manual shaft so the throttle valve actuator cannot self-calibrate.

Check this before chasing electrical faults. NHTSA's complaint database for the 2005 Ram 2500 returns 63 complaints under Power Train, 40 mentioning transmission, shift, gear, converter, overdrive or limp-mode symptoms, several describing the truck moving out of Park into Reverse.

The fix: which parts, and why

Replace while you are in there

  • Pan gasket and filter, always.
  • Governor pressure solenoid and sensor together, not one at a time.
  • Manual shaft seal, plus an inspection of the case bore and detent ball pocket.
  • Separator plate matched to the unit. On a 48RE, verify the large plate ID.
  • Torque converter if the converter clutch was slipping. Sonnax ties converter bushing failure and overheated converter to pressure regulator and switch valve wear, so a worn valve body often means a cooked converter.
  • Cooler flush, since a failed converter clutch puts debris into the cooler circuit.

Cost and effort

Valve body replacement is an in-vehicle job on most applications: drop the pan, remove the valve body, transfer or replace the solenoid pack and sensors, reinstall, set the TV linkage. Budget 3 to 5 hours for a DIYer on jack stands, at moderate difficulty. The step people skip is TV linkage adjustment, and the Sonnax guides flag "difficulty in adjusting shift timing with TV linkage" as a wear symptom, so a fresh valve body with a mis-set TV rod still shifts wrong. A governor pressure solenoid and sensor kit is the cheapest meaningful repair here, roughly 2 to 3 hours with the pan drop. A full rebuild is a transmission-out job.

Can I put a 46RE or 47RE valve body on a 48RE?

Physically it goes on. Sonnax warns it seems to work at first, then the vehicle returns with a failed torque converter clutch or overdrive clutch, because the 48RE valve body raises line pressure roughly 22 to 28 psi in lockup and 4th versus roughly 10 to 15 psi on the 46/47RE. Do not do it.
