These two get confused constantly, and it is easy to see why. Both are ten-speed longitudinal automatics. Both came out of the same Ford-GM co-development program. Both use four planetary gearsets, six friction clutches, and a lower valve body full of direct-acting solenoids.

But they are not two trims of the same unit. The 10L90 is General Motors' performance-car and luxury ten-speed. The 10R140 is Ford's heavy-duty Super Duty ten-speed, and it is a physically much larger transmission built for roughly double the input torque. If you are buying parts, planning a swap, or trying to figure out which one is behind your bellhousing, the differences matter far more than the shared architecture does.

How to tell which one you actually have

Start with the vehicle, because the application lists barely overlap.

The 10L90 shows up in GM rear-drive performance and luxury applications: the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro from 2017 on, the Cadillac CT6 for 2019-2020, the Cadillac CT5 from 2021, and the fifth-generation Cadillac Escalade from 2022, per GearboxList's 10L90 application data.

The 10R140 is Super Duty territory only. DieselHub lists it in 2020-and-newer F-250, F-350, and F-450 pickups and chassis cabs, plus the F-600 from 2021, behind either the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel or the 7.3L gas V-8. It is built at Ford's Sharonville, Ohio transmission plant.

If the vehicle does not settle it, weight will. GearboxList puts the 10L90 at about 105 kg, roughly 231 lbs. DieselHub lists the 10R140 at 339-347 lbs depending on 2WD or 4WD. That is over 100 lbs of difference between two units that look similar in a catalog photo. The 10R140 also carries a torque converter that Gears Magazine weighs at 71 lbs, heavy enough that Ford's own procedure calls for a crane to remove and install it.

Strength: not close

This is the headline difference and the reason most people search the comparison in the first place.

DieselHub lists the 10R140's nominal maximum input torque at 1,400 N-m, which works out to 1,033 lb-ft. Gears Magazine's family comparison puts the same unit at 1,050 lb-ft maximum capacity, alongside 590 lb-ft for the 10R80 and 443 lb-ft for the 10R60. The Ford-GM 10-speed family reference places the 10L90 in the 900 N-m tier, roughly 664 lb-ft, well below the 1,400 N-m heavy-duty tier the 10R140 occupies.

So the 10R140 is not a slightly beefier 10L90. It is a full torque class above it, engineered around a diesel that makes its peak number just off idle and tows for a living.

Gear ratios side by side

The ratio sets are close cousins but not identical. GearboxList lists the 10L90 as 4.696, 2.985, 2.146, 1.800, 1.520, 1.275, 1.000, 0.854, 0.689, and 0.636, with a 4.886 reverse. DieselHub lists the 10R140 as 4.615, 2.919, 2.132, 1.773, 1.519, 1.277, 1.00, 0.85, 0.687, and 0.632, with a 4.695 reverse.

Both run seventh as the 1:1 direct gear with three overdrives above it. The overall spread is 7.386 for the 10L90 and 7.299 for the 10R140 according to the family reference, and DieselHub calculates the 10R140's average gear step at 25 percent. The 10L90's slightly deeper first gear and slightly shorter tenth reflect its performance-car mission; the 10R140's numbers are set around a converter that DieselHub notes locks up in gears 2 through 10.

What does and does not interchange

Almost nothing, and this is where people lose money.

The family reference is blunt about it: each company manufactures its own unique version of the transmission in its own factories, and the versions are not directly interchangeable. Gears Magazine goes further even within the Ford side, noting that most internal parts do not swap between the 10R60, 10R80, and 10R140, and that the valve body differs across models and cannot be exchanged between units.

The one thing Gears Magazine notes as shared is the CIDAS solenoid base part number across the Ford variants, but those solenoids are position-sensitive inside the valve body, so a matching base number is not permission to move one around. Order by the exact transmission code, not by "it's a ten-speed."

Fluid: the mistake that kills both

These are ultra-low-viscosity transmissions and they are unforgiving about it.

The 10L90 takes DEXRON ULV. GearboxList lists 12.3 liters total capacity, about 5.0 liters for a partial drain-and-fill, on a 60,000 km service interval.

The 10R140 takes MERCON Ultra Low Viscosity. DieselHub lists 18.1-18.2 U.S. quarts total, a Motorcraft FT-221 filter, and a 150,000-mile fluid-and-filter interval, and notes that MERCON ULV is not cross-compatible with previous or coinciding MERCON products. Gears Magazine states plainly that the wrong fluid causes shift quality problems and failure.

Do not treat DEXRON ULV and MERCON ULV as the same thing because both say "ULV," and do not top off a ten-speed with whatever multi-vehicle ATF is on the shelf. That single shortcut has ended more of these units than hard driving has.

Known trouble spots

On the 10L90, GearboxList documents jerking, jolting, and abrupt shifts in the early production years, a transmission whine traced to oil pump misalignment, and a weak plastic oil pan that aluminum replacements address. If you have an early Camaro or CT6 with harsh shifts, that is a documented pattern rather than a one-off.

On the 10R140, Gears Magazine notes that an Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle is required after a rebuild, a TCM replacement, or major engine work. Skip it and the transmission will shift badly on a fresh build for reasons that have nothing to do with the build itself.

Which one should you choose?

For most owners this is not really a choice, because the transmission comes with the vehicle. But if you are planning a swap or specifying a build:

  • Choose the 10L90 if you are behind a GM Gen V V-8 in a car or light-duty chassis and your torque number lives under the 900 N-m tier. It is 100+ lbs lighter, the fluid fill is a third smaller, and the whole package is sized for a performance car rather than a work truck.
  • Choose the 10R140 if you are making heavy-duty diesel torque or towing at Super Duty weights. Nothing about the 10L90 was designed for 1,000+ lb-ft, and the 10R140's PTO provision - DieselHub lists 300 lb-ft stationary, 200 lb-ft mobile, and 60 hp behind the 6.7L - is a capability the GM unit simply does not have.

What you should not do is cross-shop them as if they were interchangeable options for the same build. They share a design philosophy and almost no hardware.

Parts and service planning

If you are opening either unit, plan the job around what is already out. While you are in there: pan and filter, all case and pump seals, cooler lines flushed, and fresh fluid of the correct ULV specification. On the 10R140 add a converter inspection, since it is already coming out on a crane.

Effort framing: both are heavy, electronically complex units. A ten-speed overhaul is not a weekend first-timer job. Expect a full day-plus of labor for removal and installation alone on the 10R140 given the converter weight and crane requirement, and budget shop time for the adaptive relearn afterward.

Can I put a 10R140 behind a GM engine, or a 10L90 behind a Power Stroke?
Not as a bolt-in. The two versions are built by different manufacturers in different plants and are not directly interchangeable. Any cross-brand install is a fabrication and controls project, not a parts swap.
