10L80 vs 10R140: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose

These two get compared constantly because they look like the same idea: a ten-speed automatic, four planetary gear sets, six clutches, a two-piece valve body, and ultra-low-viscosity fluid. They are not the same transmission and they are not in the same weight class. The GM 10L80 is a half-ton and performance-car unit. The Ford 10R140 is a Super Duty unit built to sit behind a 6.7L Power Stroke. If you are trying to decide which one you want under a truck, or you are staring at a parts list and trying to figure out which family your unit belongs to, the differences below are the ones that actually matter.

The short answer

If the truck is a half-ton, an SUV, or a car, the 10L80 is the unit you have and the unit you want. If the truck is an F-250 or heavier, or you are towing at Super Duty weights, the 10R140 is the unit and there is no realistic way to substitute the smaller one. The 10R140 is roughly 110 pounds heavier and carries about five more quarts of fluid, and that mass is where the extra torque capacity lives.

How to tell which one you are working on

  1. Start with the vehicle. The 10R140 has been used since 2020 in the Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 pickups and chassis cabs, and since 2021 in the F-600, behind the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel and the 7.3L gas V-8, according to DieselHub's 10R140 TorqShift specifications. Gears Magazine also lists a 6.2L gas application in its 10R140 introduction article. The 10L80 shows up from 2017 forward in GM half-tons and SUVs, and in the Camaro ZL1 with the supercharged V-8, per DieselHub's 10R80/10L80 page.
  2. Check the RPO tag on a GM. GM's 2025 TechLink transmission capacities and fluids chart lists the 10L80 under RPO codes MQB, MQC, MHT, MHS, MHU and MI2 across Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, CT4 and CT5.
  3. Check the fluid spec. Both families use an ultra-low-viscosity fluid, but they are not the same bottle. GM's chart calls for DEXRON ULV on every 10L80 line. The 10R140 uses Motorcraft/Ford MERCON ULV per DieselHub. Do not cross them.
  4. Count the fill. DieselHub lists the 10R140 at 18.1 to 18.2 quarts total. GM's capacity chart lists 7.7 liters (8.1 quarts) for 10L80 applications, while DieselHub lists roughly 13 U.S. quarts as the 10L80 total. The gap between those two 10L80 numbers is the difference between a drain-and-fill service and a dry unit, which is exactly why you should work off the chart that matches the job you are doing.

What is actually different inside

Torque rating

This is the whole comparison in one line. DieselHub lists the 10L80 at a nominal 800 N-m, about 590 lb-ft. Gears Magazine states Ford rates the 10R140 at "475 hp and a whopping 1,050 ft-lbs of torque," and DieselHub lists a nominal maximum input of 1,400 N-m (1,033 ft-lbs). That is not a calibration difference. It is a bigger, heavier unit with more clutch area behind it.

Weight and case

DieselHub puts the 10L80 at approximately 230 pounds and the 10R140 at 339 to 347 pounds depending on 2WD or 4WD. Gears Magazine notes that all of the units in this ten-speed family use a one-piece case design. The 10R140 torque converter alone weighs 71 pounds, and the factory recommends using a crane to remove and install it.

Gear ratios

The ratios are close but not identical. DieselHub lists the 10L80 at 4.70, 2.99, 2.15, 1.80, 1.52, 1.28, 1.00, 0.85, 0.69 and 0.64, with a 4.87 reverse. The 10R140 runs 4.615, 2.919, 2.132, 1.773, 1.519, 1.277, 1.00, 0.85, 0.687 and 0.632, with a 4.695 reverse. Both put seventh at 1.00:1 and run three overdrive ratios above it.

Architecture and valve body

Gears Magazine, in its comparison of the 10R140, 10R80 and 10R60, describes the shared layout: four planetary gear sets, six clutch assemblies, and a valve body assembly, with four rotating clutches and two brake clutches producing the ten forward ranges. The 10R140 uses an upper valve body and a lower valve body carrying eight solenoids, six of which are the shift solenoids A through F. Those six are casting-integrated direct-acting solenoids, or CIDAS, which means no transmission fluid passes through them.

The important part for anyone buying parts: Gears states plainly that the basic valve body assembly is the same across the variants but cannot interchange between them, that the 10R140 has a unique gear drive setup for the pump that varies with whether PTO is fitted, and that "most of the parts inside these units are not interchangeable." Shared architecture is not shared hardware. The one place they do overlap is solenoids, where Gears notes the OEM replacement uses the same base part number across the variants for the CIDAS, pressure control and TCC solenoids.

PTO

The 10R140 has a provision the 10L80 does not. DieselHub lists PTO ratings of 300 lb-ft stationary and 200 lb-ft mobile with 60 hp continuous behind the 6.7L diesel, and 250 lb-ft stationary and 125 lb-ft mobile with 40 hp continuous behind the 7.3L gas engine. If you are building a service truck, that alone decides the question.

Which parts you buy, and why

Because the internals do not cross over, the only useful move is to buy to the exact unit. A 10L80 clutch and steel stack, filter, gasket set and solenoid pack will not serve a 10R140 and the reverse is equally true.

Replace while you are in there

  • Filter and pan gasket. Non-negotiable on either unit any time the pan comes off.
  • Full seal and gasket set, including the front pump seal and the case-to-bellhousing sealing surfaces.
  • Frictions and steels as a matched set, not piecemeal. Mixing new frictions against glazed steels is how a fresh rebuild comes back.
  • Torque converter. On the 10R140, remember you are handling 71 pounds and Ford recommends a crane, per Gears Magazine.
  • Solenoid pack if you have any pressure control or shift-timing complaint on the way in. The CIDAS solenoids are dry-mounted, which makes them a clean swap while the valve body is out.
  • The correct ULV fluid in the correct volume. DEXRON ULV for the 10L80, MERCON ULV for the 10R140.

Cost and effort

Neither of these is a driveway afternoon. Both are heavy, both are R&R jobs that want a transmission jack, and the 10R140 is close to 350 pounds bare before you add a 71-pound converter. Plan on a shop quoting the removal and installation at roughly 8 to 12 hours on a Super Duty, less on a half-ton, and more on any 4WD or chassis cab where the transfer case and driveshafts add steps.

The step people underestimate is the electronics. Gears Magazine states that an Adaptive Learning Drive Cycle has to be performed after a rebuild, after TCM replacement or reprogramming, after major engine work, or after resetting adaptive values. If you skip it, the unit shifts badly and the customer thinks the rebuild failed. Budget scan-tool time into the job, not just wrench time.

DieselHub also lists a 150,000-mile fluid service interval for the 10R140, which is a reminder that "lifetime fluid" thinking is what gets ten-speeds onto a bench early.

FAQ

Can a 10R140 be swapped into a half-ton, or a 10L80 into a Super Duty?

Not as a bolt-in. The bellhousing, case length, mounting, cooler lines, driveline and control strategy are all specific to their platforms, and Gears Magazine states most internal parts do not interchange across the ten-speed variants. Treat these as two separate units that happen to share a design philosophy.

Is the 10L80 the same as Ford's 10R80?

Very nearly. DieselHub describes the hard parts as physically identical between the two, with the primary distinction being the electronic controls, which are closely integrated with each manufacturer's powertrain. Which one is stronger?

The 10R140, by a wide margin on paper. Roughly 1,033 to 1,050 lb-ft of rated input against roughly 590 lb-ft for the 10L80, per DieselHub and Gears Magazine respectively. That is the design intent: one unit lives behind a Power Stroke pulling a trailer, the other lives behind a 5.3L or a 6.2L.

Do they use the same fluid?
