TH400 to 700R4 Swap: Add OD to Classic

The TH400 to 700R4 swap is popular but has tradeoffs. You gain overdrive and lose some HP capacity. Here's the complete decision and install guide.

Why swap

TH400 strengths:

  • Bulletproof construction
  • ~600 ft-lb stock capacity
  • Simple, reliable
  • Read our TH350 vs TH400

TH400 weaknesses:

  • No overdrive
  • High highway RPM (3,000+ at 70 mph)
  • MPG penalty

700R4 advantages:

  • 4-speed with overdrive
  • 25-30% RPM drop at cruise
  • 5-10% MPG improvement
  • Smoother highway driving

700R4 weaknesses:

When to do this swap

Worth doing:

  • Mild-to-medium HP build
  • Stock or rebuilt engine
  • Daily driver / cruiser
  • MPG matters
  • Read our TH350 vs 700R4 swap

Not worth doing:

  • High HP (over 500 ft-lb sustained)
  • Race / drag
  • HD tow rig

Parts needed

Transmission:

  • Used 700R4 core: $300-600
  • Reman 700R4: $1,000-1,800
  • Rebuild from core (with HD): $1,500-2,500
  • Read our best 4L60E rebuild kit (4L60E and 700R4 share many parts)

Conversion components:

  • TV cable: $30-80 (CRITICAL!)
  • TV bracket: $20-40 (if not present)
  • Driveshaft (different length)
  • Trans pan
  • Cooler lines (different routing)
  • Trans mount adapter (sometimes needed)
  • Yoke (different)

Approximate cost:

  • Trans + parts: $1,500-3,000
  • Labor (shop): $1,000-2,000
  • DIY: time only

Critical: TV cable

Why critical:

  • 700R4 line pressure depends on TV cable
  • Wrong adjustment = trans damage in miles
  • TH400 doesn't have TV (vacuum modulator instead)
  • New install must include proper TV setup

TV cable components:

  • TV cable assembly
  • TV bracket (sometimes needed for older throttle)
  • Throttle adapter (sometimes needed)

Adjustment:

  • Specific procedure per service manual
  • Cable must move with throttle precisely
  • Critical accuracy

Mechanical considerations

Bellhousing:

  • TH400 and 700R4 share small-block GM pattern
  • BB Chevy also same (verify)
  • Direct bolt-up

Driveshaft:

  • 700R4 is shorter than TH400
  • Existing won't fit (too long)
  • Modify or new

Trans tunnel:

  • 700R4 slightly smaller
  • More clearance usually

Crossmember:

Cooler lines:

Electrical needs

Newer 700R4 (with TCC):

Hydraulic-only 700R4 (very early):

  • Some early 700R4 lack TCC
  • Simpler swap
  • Less common

Verify before purchase:

  • Year of 700R4 core
  • Connector configuration
  • Plan electrical accordingly

Cooler considerations

700R4 needs cooling:

Cooler line connections:

  • May need adapter fittings
  • Verify before assembly

Strength preparation

Stock 700R4:

  • ~360 ft-lb adequate for stock SBC
  • Not enough for BBC or modded

Sonnax billet TCC apply piston:

B&M shift kit:

Result with HD:

  • 500+ ft-lb capacity
  • Comparable to TH400 with mild HP

Swap procedure overview

Day 1: Remove TH400

1. Drain fluid

2. Disconnect electrical (minimal in TH400)

3. Remove driveshaft

4. Support trans

5. Remove crossmember

6. Lower trans

Day 2-3: Prep 700R4

1. Verify rebuild quality

2. New filter, gasket

3. TV cable and bracket ready

Day 3-4: Install

1. Raise 700R4 into position

2. Bolt to engine

3. Modified crossmember

4. New/modified driveshaft

5. Cooler lines

6. TV cable critical

7. Electrical (if equipped)

Day 5: TV adjustment + first start

1. Refill fluid

2. TV cable adjustment per spec

3. First start, idle check

4. Test drive cautiously

Time total: 25-40 hours DIY

TV cable adjustment

Critical procedure:

1. Cable end at full retract

2. Cable end at WOT throttle = specific position

3. Verify with cable adjustment tab

4. Move with throttle through full range

5. Re-verify at static settings

Verify with test drive:

  • WOT shifts at specific RPM
  • Part-throttle shifts smooth
  • No flare or harsh
  • Wrong = re-adjust immediately

Common swap mistakes

Mistake 1: Skipping Sonnax sun shell

  • Standard 700R4 will eventually crack
  • Mandatory upgrade
  • Read our Sonnax explained

Mistake 2: TV cable misadjustment

  • Most common cause of 700R4 failure
  • Verify obsessively

Mistake 3: Forgetting cooler

Mistake 4: No TCC wiring

What you gain

Quantifiable:

  • 25-30% lower highway RPM
  • 5-10% MPG improvement
  • 20-40°F cooler operation (with TCC working)

Subjective:

  • Quieter highway
  • Less engine wear
  • Smoother cruise

What you give up

Quantifiable:

  • 240+ ft-lb capacity (until HD rebuild)
  • Slightly more complexity

Subjective:

  • Simpler reliability of TH400
  • "Bulletproof" feeling

Cost vs alternatives

TH400 to 700R4 swap:

  • Total: $2,500-5,000
  • 5-7 year MPG payback
  • Mild-medium HP applications

TH400 to 4L80E swap:

Keep TH400 with rear gear change:

  • $400-800 in rear gears
  • Less MPG benefit
  • TH400 reliability retained

What about for race?

Not for race:

  • Race trans builders avoid 700R4
  • Use TH400 with HD parts
  • Or specialty race trans
