How to Change 47RE / 48RE Transmission Fluid: ATF+4 DIY Guide

Your Cummins 5.9L truck has a 47RE or 48RE. The right fluid (ATF+4) and proper service interval keeps it running 300k+ miles. Heres the DIY procedure.

Service interval

Stock truck daily:

  • 50,000-60,000 miles
  • Tow use:

  • 30,000 miles
  • Aux cooler recommended
  • Tuned trucks:

  • 25,000 miles
  • Synthetic ATF+4 recommended
  • Aux cooler mandatory
  • Fluid spec - CRITICAL

    • ATF+4 ONLY (Mopar spec)
    • NOT Dexron, NOT Mercon
    • 13 quarts full capacity
    • Wrong fluid causes early clutch failure

    What you need

    Parts:

  • ATF+4 fluid (13 quarts)
  • Filter (Mopar PN varies)
  • Pan gasket
  • Tools:

  • 15mm + 10mm sockets
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan (15+ qt)
  • Funnel
  • Jack + stands
  • Cost:

  • ATF+4 (13 qts): $100-$160
  • Filter: $15-$30
  • Pan gasket: $10-$25
  • Total parts: $125-$215
  • Step 1: Warm trans

    • Drive 10-15 minutes
    • Operating temp 180F+

    Step 2: Raise vehicle

    • Jack stands
    • Drain pan positioned

    Step 3: Drain pan

If drain plug (some years have):

  • Remove plug
  • Drain ~7 quarts
  • If no drain plug (most):

  • Loosen pan bolts from corner
  • Let fluid drain
  • Catch in drain pan
  • Step 4: Drop pan

    • 14 bolts (47RE/48RE pan)
    • 10mm wrench
    • Pan may stick - pry gently

    Step 5: Inspect pan

    Magnet:

  • Gray dust = normal
  • Brass = bushing wear
  • Steel pieces = catastrophic
  • Fluid color:

  • Red = healthy
  • Brown = service overdue
  • Burnt smell = damage
  • Step 6: Replace filter

    • Filter bolted to valve body
    • Pull straight down
    • Install new with new O-ring
    • Hand-tighten only

    Step 7: Pan gasket

    • Clean both surfaces
    • New rubber or cork gasket
    • No sealant on rubber

    Step 8: Reinstall pan

    • Torque cross pattern
    • Spec: 100 in-lb (8.3 ft-lb)
    • NOT ft-lb (in-lb)
    • DO NOT over-tighten

    Step 9: Refill through dipstick

    • 47RE/48RE has dipstick
    • Add 7-8 quarts initial
    • ATF+4 ONLY

    Step 10: Cycle and check

    Engine running, brake pressed:

  • Cycle all gears (5 sec each)
  • Return to Park
  • Dipstick check:

  • Pull, wipe, reinsert, pull
  • HOT range when trans at operating temp
  • Add fluid as needed
  • Time and cost

    DIY:

  • Parts: $125-$215
  • Time: 2-3 hours
  • Tools (one-time): $50-$150
  • Total: $175-$365
  • Shop:

  • Parts: $125-$215
  • Labor: $200-$400
  • Total: $325-$615
  • Cummins-specific tips

    Trans must be warm:

  • Cold drain leaves more old fluid
  • Hot drain catches more
  • While pan is off:

  • Inspect governor solenoid and pressure sensor
  • Quick visual check of valve body
  • Read our 47RE governor solenoid guide
  • Consider TV cable adjustment:

  • Best time to adjust
  • Free preventive maintenance
  • Read our 47RE TV cable guide
  • Common DIY mistakes

    • Wrong fluid (Dexron VI = clutch death)
    • Over-tightening pan bolts (warps pan)
    • Reusing old gasket (instant leak)
    • Skipping filter (defeats whole service)
    • Not warming trans (incomplete drain)
    • Not adjusting TV cable while in there

    What burnt fluid means

    If burnt at service:

  • Direct or OD clutches damaged
  • Service buys 5-20k miles
  • Plan rebuild
  • Tuned truck with burnt fluid:

  • Hard launches usually the cause
  • HD rebuild required soon
  • Plan for HD billet upgrades
  • Pair with aux cooler

    • Best time to install
    • Pan dropped anyway
    • Add aux cooler in cooler line return
    • Read our cooler upgrade guide

    Pair with TransGo shift kit

    • Best time to install
    • Valve body access already
    • ~$150 part for shift quality improvement
    • Read our 47RE shift kit
