The 47RE governor pressure solenoid controls shift timing on the Dodge Cummins. When it fails, shifts go to hell. Here is how to spot it and fix it.
What the governor solenoid does
- Replaces the centrifugal governor of the old 727
- Electronic shift control via the PCM
- Modulates governor pressure based on RPM/load
- Critical for 3-4 (overdrive) shift timing
Symptoms
- Harsh 1-2 shift
- No overdrive engagement
- Flares between gears
- P1740 (TCC/OD solenoid)
- P1762 (governor pressure sensor offset)
- P1763 (governor pressure too high)
- P1764 (governor pressure too low)
Why it fails
- 24V coil in dirty fluid
- Burnt fluid coats the screen
- Solenoid valve sticks
- Coil shorts after long heat exposure
Diagnosis
Step 1: Pull codes
- P1762/1763/1764 all point to governor solenoid or sensor
- P1740 with shift problems = same area
Step 2: Check fluid
- Dark or burnt fluid = service first, may fix
- Clean fluid + code = solenoid likely
Step 3: Resistance test
- Drop pan
- Disconnect solenoid harness
- Spec: 1-2 ohms (governor) / 30 ohms (sensor)
Step 4: Pressure test
- Tee a gauge into governor port
- Spec: 0-100 PSI proportional to RPM
- Stuck high or low = solenoid replacement
Replacement parts
OEM solenoid pack:
- 52118456 (governor solenoid)
- 56028196AD (pressure sensor)
- $40-$80 each
TransGo HD kit:
- TF-3 / SK 727 (HD solenoid + spring)
- $80-$150
- Recommended for tuned Cummins
Always replace together:
- Pan gasket
- Filter
- 13 quarts ATF+4
Install
- Drain trans, drop pan
- Disconnect harness from solenoid and sensor
- Remove valve body bolts (10mm)
- Drop valve body
- Solenoid + sensor on top of VB
- Install new with new O-rings
- Torque VB bolts in sequence (8 ft-lb)
Cost
DIY:
- Solenoid + sensor: $80-$160
- Filter + fluid: $100-$150
- Time: 3-4 hours
- Total: $180-$310
Shop:
- Labor: $350-$600
- Parts: $80-$160
- Fluid: $80-$140
- Total: $510-$900
Do not skip the pressure sensor
If you replace solenoid only and leave a worn sensor, codes return in 1,000 miles. Replace both as a set.

When solenoid is not the fix
If P1762/1763/1764 return after new solenoid + sensor:
- PCM software (often fixable with reflash)
- Valve body wear (governor circuit)
