GM 6L80 P2714: Slipping in 2nd and 6th, and the Real Fix

You pull away from a light in a 2011 Silverado, the 1-2 shift flares, and the truck feels like it slipped a belt. Sixth gear does the same thing on the highway. The light comes on, you scan it, and there it is: P2714 – Pressure Control Solenoid "D" Performance/Stuck Off. Most people order a solenoid that same afternoon. On a 6L80 that is the wrong first move at least as often as it is the right one.

Here is what P2714 is actually telling you, how to chase it in the order that costs the least, and what actually fixes it.

What P2714 means on a 6L80

On GM applications, P2714 is Pressure Control Solenoid Valve 4 Stuck Off. That solenoid lives inside the control solenoid valve assembly, and its job is to regulate fluid pressure to the 2-6 clutch regulator valve, which controls apply pressure to the 2-6 clutch pack. The TCM calculates actual gear ratio from the input and output speed sensors, compares it to the ratio it expects for the gear it commanded, and sets P2714 when it sees an incorrect ratio or an outright neutral condition while the 2-6 clutch is commanded ON. Per the GM code file, that has to happen three times before the code matures.

Read that again, because it is the whole article: the TCM is not reporting an electrical fault. It is reporting that it asked for a clutch and the drum did not hold. The 2-6 clutch applies in second and in sixth, which is exactly why the complaint shows up in those two gears and nowhere else. A stuck-off solenoid is one way to get there. So is debris, a worn valve bore, a wrong separator plate, or a burnt clutch pack.

Sonnax puts 6L80 production at more than eight million units since 2006 across roughly 20 GM models. The heavy-duty 6L90 shares the design and the failure.

Symptoms you will actually notice

  • Flare or slip on the 1-2 shift, and again going into sixth
  • Engine RPM climbing without matching road speed
  • Harsh or delayed engagement once the TCM starts compensating
  • MIL on, P2714 stored as current or history
  • Intermittent behavior – fine one drive cycle, slipping the next
  • Eventually failsafe or limited gears if the clutch cooks

That intermittent pattern is a real clue, and it points straight at the number one cause below.

Diagnose it in this order

1. Fluid level and condition, before anything else. The 6L80 requires DEXRON-VI, and level is set at the level control plug in the pan – fluid between 86–122°F (30–50°C), engine idling on level ground, after shifting through each range and pausing about three seconds per range to let the clutches fill. The level is correct when fluid drips from the hole; a steady stream means overfull, no flow means low. Low or burnt fluid produces pressure faults that read exactly like a stuck solenoid.

2. Look at line pressure in scan data. Sonnax notes that a TEHCM line pressure solenoid stuck in exhaust mode typically parks line pressure around 60–68 psi with no rise on RPM at all. If your pressure is flat like that, you have a supply problem, not a 2-6 clutch problem.

3. Read the pan. Clutch material, aluminum, or brass tells you whether you are cleaning a valve body or planning a rebuild.

4. Verify the TEHCM part number and programming. Sonnax is blunt about this: an incorrect part number or an incorrectly programmed TEHCM can cause no-movement or no-upshift conditions, and any replacement must have both its part number and program file matched to the VIN. A previously replaced, mis-programmed module will throw ratio-based codes all day.

5. Pull the valve body and inspect the spacer plate. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one the factory bulletin points to.

The real causes, ranked

1. Debris blocking spacer plate orifices

The GM service bulletin behind this code describes slipping when shifting into second or sixth with the MIL on and P2714 stored, caused by debris – small metal or plastic chips, or small pieces of paper – blocking orifices in the spacer plate. The bulletin notes this is likeliest when the condition is intermittent, because debris can move and block an orifice on one drive cycle and not the next. The prescribed repair: remove the valve channel plate and spacer plate, inspect the oil channels and orifices that feed the 2-6 clutch regulator valve, clean everything thoroughly, and confirm the 2-6 regulator valve moves freely in its bore.

If your P2714 comes and goes, start here. It is cheap and it is common.

2. Stuck or worn valves in the valve body

Sonnax documents that 6L-series clutch regulator valves stick – a stuck 1-2-3-4 clutch regulator valve gives no Forward, and the 3-5-R clutch regulator valve is known to stick and cause no Reverse plus shift complaints – and that line pressure is typically normal in those conditions. Normal line pressure does not clear the valve body. Sonnax's kit catalog for this family lists clutch pressure solenoid codes and burnt clutches as symptoms addressed by the oversized clutch boost valve (PN 104740-01), and solenoid performance codes plus clutch failure for the actuator feed limit valve kit (PN 104740-47K).

Translation: on this family, "solenoid performance" codes are frequently bore wear wearing a solenoid's mask.

3. Wrong separator plate or misplaced check ball

If P2714 showed up right after somebody had the valve body apart, this jumps to the top. Wayne Colonna documented in Transmission Digest that the 6L80 valve body changed how the 3-5-R clutch is fed: the early design fed directly from the #5 shuttle ball to the #7 metering check ball, and the later design walled that passage off and routed the circuit through an added slot in the spacer plate. A late plate on an early valve body loses 3-5-R feed and floods SS2; an early plate on a late valve body blocks 3-5-R feed outright.

Sonnax adds the parallel cases: a Type 2 plate on a Type 1 valve body causes no Forward, the correct Type 1 plate (#24245720) uses seven check balls, and clutch select valves installed backwards cause no movement (valves in first, springs outboard). In all of these, line pressure reads normal.

4. A genuinely burnt 2-6 clutch

A clutch that has been slipping for weeks is already damaged. If the pan is full of friction material, cleaning the plate will not give you second gear back.

5. The solenoid itself

It happens. It is just not first, and on this unit the solenoids are part of the control solenoid valve assembly rather than loose parts GM sells individually.

The fix, by what you actually found

Debris, plate otherwise clean: clean the channel plate, spacer plate and valve body thoroughly, verify the 2-6 regulator valve strokes freely, reassemble with fresh gaskets. A 6L80 valve body separator plate kit and a 6L80 valve body check ball kit are cheap insurance while it is apart.

Worn bores: either sleeve the bores with the Sonnax kits above or install a known-good unit. Our remanufactured valve bodies cover the 6L80 in both the 2009-2013 and 2014-2020 configurations, which sidesteps the early/late plate mismatch trap entirely.

Electrical or solenoid fault: an updated 6L80/6L90 shift solenoid set covers 2006-up units and is the sane move when the pan is clean, line pressure is normal, and the valves all stroke.

Friction material in the pan: plan the rebuild. Nothing in the valve body fixes a clutch that is gone.

Replace while you are in there

  • Transmission filter and pan gasket – the pan is already off
  • Valve body gasket set and bolt kit
  • TEHCM gasket and seal kit
  • Check balls and separator plate, per above
  • TEHCM connector repair pigtail, if any pins look green or spread
  • Enough DEXRON-VI to refill and set level at temperature

Do not skip the relearn. After a valve body or solenoid repair the adapts are stale and the truck will shift badly until they reset – walk through our 6L80 adapt reset procedure before you decide the repair failed.

Cost and effort, honestly

Diagnosis alone is generally billed around one hour of labor, and that assumes the shop actually checks fluid at temperature and looks at pressure data rather than quoting a module off the code. Pan drop and valve body removal is an intermediate driveway job – roughly three to five hours for a first-timer on jack stands, plus a half hour for the fill and level procedure. Rebuilding the unit is a different conversation and not a first-weekend project.

FAQ

Will replacing the solenoid fix P2714 on a 6L80?
Sometimes, but the code is a ratio complaint, not an electrical one. The GM bulletin points at debris blocking spacer plate orifices feeding the 2-6 clutch regulator valve, and Sonnax lists clutch pressure solenoid codes among the symptoms of worn clutch boost and actuator feed limit valve bores. Clean and inspect before you buy.

Can I keep driving with P2714?
Not advisable. The code is rated high severity, and a clutch slipping under command is generating heat and friction material that contaminates the rest of the unit. Every mile makes the repair bigger.

Does P2714 mean my transmission is done?
Not by itself. Clean fluid, a clean pan, and normal line pressure rise most likely means a valve body cleaning or a valve kit. A pan full of friction material has already answered the question.
