Most common 6L80 DTCs

P0700 - TCM Reporting Trans Code

  • Generic "TCM has set a code"
  • NOT a diagnostic in itself
  • Pull TCM-specific codes next

P0741 - TCC Stuck Off

  • Most common 6L80 code
  • Causes: TCC solenoid bad, fluid burnt, converter clutch worn
  • Read our 6L80 TCC solenoid guide
  • Fix cost: $80-$700 depending on root cause

P0776 - PCS2 Stuck Off

  • Shift solenoid for 1-2 or 3-4 stuck
  • Symptom: harsh shift or missed gear
  • Fix: solenoid pack replacement
  • Read our 6L80 solenoid pack guide

P0796 - PCS3 Stuck Off

  • Shift solenoid for higher gears stuck
  • Same fix as P0776
  • Often appears with multiple PCS codes

P0868 - Line Pressure Low

  • Pump pressure below spec
  • Causes: stator support wear, pump body wear, fluid level
  • Fix: pump/stator service ($400-$1,500)
  • Read our 6L80 stator support

P0716 - ISS Range/Performance

  • Input speed sensor erratic
  • Fix: replace sensor ($40-$80)

P0722 - OSS No Signal

  • Output speed sensor failed
  • Symptom: no speedometer, limp mode
  • Read our 6L80 OSS guide

P0894 - Trans Component Slipping

  • TCM detected slip in a gear ratio
  • Causes: worn clutch pack, low pressure
  • Often comes with P073X gear ratio codes

P0731-P0736 - Gear Ratio Incorrect

  • P0731: 1st gear ratio
  • P0732: 2nd
  • P0733: 3rd
  • P0734: 4th
  • P0735: 5th
  • P0736: 6th (or reverse on some)
  • Indicates clutch slip in that gear
  • Fix: rebuild required

How to read 6L80 codes

OBD2 scan tool (basic):

  • Reads P0700 + generic codes
  • Limited TCM access

GM-specific scanner:

  • Tech 2 or modern equivalent (Snap-on, Autel)
  • Reads all TCM codes
  • Live data for solenoid commands

HP Tuners / EFILive:

  • Full TCM read
  • Real-time monitoring
  • Best for tuning shops

Common code combinations

P0700 + P0776 + P0796:

  • Multiple solenoids failing
  • Replace full solenoid pack (not individual)

P0700 + P0741:

  • TCC issue
  • Check TCC solenoid + converter

P0700 + P0868:

  • Line pressure problem
  • Stator support or pump wear

P0700 + multiple gear ratio codes:

  • Trans needs rebuild
  • Multiple clutch packs slipping

What NOT to do

  • Do not clear codes without fixing root cause (they will return)
  • Do not replace torque converter for P0776 (wrong fix)
  • Do not rebuild trans for P0722 (cheap sensor fix)
  • Do not assume P0700 alone means trans failure

Cost by code category

Cheap fixes ($40-$300):

  • P0716, P0722 (sensors)
  • P0868 if just low fluid

Mid-range fixes ($400-$1,400):

  • P0741 (TCC solenoid or converter)
  • P0776, P0796 (solenoid pack)
  • Rebuild required ($2,200-$4,400):

  • P0731-P0736 with confirmed slip
  • P0894 with burnt fluid
  • P0868 from internal wear
  • Service Fast Learn after any code

    • Required after solenoid pack replacement
    • Required after fluid change
    • Recalibrates TCM adapt values
    • Critical for shift quality
