Best Rebuild Kit for 47RE

There is no single "best" 47RE rebuild kit — there is the right kit for what the truck actually does. A stock-power 2WD that tows a boat twice a summer and a 500-horsepower Cummins that pulls a gooseneck every week need very different friction material, and paying for the second one on the first truck is wasted money while doing the reverse burns the transmission down again in a year.

This guide breaks the 47RE rebuild kit decision down by tier, explains what each level of content actually buys you, and covers the hard parts that no rebuild kit includes but that decide whether the rebuild lasts.

What the 47RE Is, and Why That Matters for Kit Selection

Raybestos Powertrain describes the 47RE as a four-speed automatic that updates the classic A727 design with an overdrive section and steel gears in place of aluminum. It is fully electronically controlled, unlike the otherwise similar 47RH, which uses hydraulic and mechanical governor pressure control instead. Raybestos lists the 47RE at a 450 lb-ft torque rating, with gear ratios of 2.45 first, 1.45 second, 1.00 third, 0.69 overdrive and 2.21 reverse, and notes it was later replaced by the stronger 48RE rated up to 570 lb-ft.

That 450 lb-ft number is the single most important fact when you are picking a kit. Every Cummins tuner, injector set and turbo upgrade eats into that margin. A stock-tune truck can be rebuilt with OE-grade content. A tuned truck cannot — it needs friction material that was designed for more than the transmission was rated to handle.

The Three Tiers of 47RE Rebuild Kit

Tier 1: Overhaul kit (gaskets, seals, rings)

The bare minimum. Paper and rubber gasket set, sealing rings, O-rings, pan gasket. No frictions, no steels, no bushings. This is what you buy when the unit came apart for an unrelated reason — a leaking pump seal, a case swap — and the clutches genuinely measured within spec. On a diesel truck with unknown history, it is almost never the right call.

Tier 2: Master kit (frictions, steels, bands, filter, gaskets)

This is the correct default for the majority of 47RE rebuilds. You get the full friction and steel content, both bands, the filter, and the complete gasket and seal package. A 47RE master transmission rebuild kit for 1998-2002 units with the filter included covers a stock or lightly-tuned truck completely, and there is a gasket-focused variant if you are sourcing the filter separately.

Tier 3: Performance / HD kit (upgraded friction and Kolene steels)

This is where towing and tuned trucks belong. Raybestos's 46RE/47RE GPZ Performance Transmission Super Rebuild Kit, part RMCSKGPZK-023 for 1997-2003 units, is a good picture of what this tier contains: a GPZ friction clutch pack, a Kolene steel clutch pack, transmission filter, both bands, thrust washer kit, bushing kit, and a performance overhaul kit. Raybestos recommends it specifically for high-stress diesel, towing and enhanced-performance applications with increased horsepower and torque, and states that testing of the GPZ friction material shows it outperforms OE materials by as much as 20 percent, with performance that improves as power increases.

If you want the upgraded friction without the full performance package, a 47RE Level 2 rebuild kit with Raybestos content for 1990-1997 units sits between the master and super-kit tiers. Compare the whole range in the 47RE rebuild kit collection.

Friction Material: What Actually Separates the Kits

The clutch counts are the same regardless of tier. What changes is what the plates are made of.

Raybestos catalogs a standard steel clutch pack module for 1997-2003 46RE/47RE units as STMCHRY04, containing 7 front, 4 overdrive brake and 9 overdrive steels, and offers the identical module in Kolene-treated high-performance steel as STMCHRY04K. Kolene is a surface treatment on the steel plate — it is not a different friction. It matters because it changes how the steel sheds heat and how it mates with the friction, and heat is what kills a diesel 47RE.

On the friction side, Raybestos lists a GPZ friction clutch pack module RGPZ-47 for 1998-on 46RE/47RE units containing 10 forward and direct GPZ plates, 5 overdrive brake GPZ plates and 10 overdrive direct Tan plates. Notice the overdrive direct pack stays Tan even in the GPZ module — that is deliberate, and it is a good sanity check on any kit claiming "all GPZ."

Bands: Do Not Cheap Out Here

The 47RE runs two bands and both are wear items. Raybestos catalogs a double-wrap low/reverse band for 1995-2009 A618/47RE/48RE V-10 and 5.9/6.7 diesel applications as RB41881, and an intermediate/kickdown band RB38961 covering 1962-on A727-family units, with a Pro Series high-energy RayFlex version RPS38961 and a wide high-performance version RPS38961W above it.

The wide band is the upgrade worth understanding. More band surface area means more holding capacity on the 1-2 shift, which is exactly where a tuned Cummins tears bands apart. If your kit ships a standard-width intermediate band and you are making meaningful power, buy the wide one separately. The 47RE kickdown band and 47RE front band are both available individually, along with the rest of the transmission band range.

What No Rebuild Kit Includes — and What Fails Anyway

This is the part that catches first-time 47RE rebuilders. The kit covers the soft parts. The failures that put a 47RE back on the bench a second time are usually hard parts.

  • Rear servo piston. Sonnax states that the rear servo piston in Chrysler 47RE and 48RE '97-later units can get wedged in the bore, causing bind in reverse, and that intermittent binding leads to bore wear and band damage. Their billet replacement 22912C uses modified seal ridges to prevent sticking and billet aluminum that will not crack like the OE cast piston.
  • Input shaft. The OE shaft is a known limit on high-power builds. Sonnax's Smart-Tech Big Input Shaft Kit 22121B-08K for 47RH/47RE/48RE units is a 35-spline design they rate 35 percent stronger than even the best heavy-duty 23- or 29-spline shafts, aimed at drivers pushing past 1,000 HP. Moving to it requires a converter with a 35-spline turbine hub.
  • Governor pressure solenoid and transducer. On an electronically controlled 47RE this is a wear item that mimics mechanical failure. BD Diesel's 47RE/48RE pressure valve body electronics upgrade replaces what they describe as the OE intermittently malfunctioning plastic transducer with a metal unit rated for higher line pressure, paired with a heavy-duty governor pressure solenoid to prevent oscillation and debris accumulation. Replace the 47RE governor pressure solenoid during any rebuild — it is cheap now and a transmission-out job later.
  • Valve body wear. Sonnax's 47RE unit listing calls out symptoms including high line pressure with no indication of boost, buildup of release pressure during lockup, difficulty adjusting shift timing with the TV linkage, and not enough OE washers to properly set end clearance. Those are hydraulic and setup problems no friction kit addresses.

Replace While You're In There

The transmission is out and on the bench. These are the items that cost a fraction of the labor to add now:

  • Both bands, even if only one looks worn
  • Complete bushing kit — Sonnax specifically warns that aftermarket replacement bushings are a poor fit in the output shaft housing, so buy quality here
  • Thrust washer set, and check end clearance rather than assuming the OE washer stack is enough
  • Governor pressure solenoid and transducer
  • Front pump bushing and seal
  • Filter — and on a diesel, the wider high-flow filter if your pan supports it
  • Rear servo piston and band strut
  • Torque converter — a rebuilt unit with a fresh clutch, matched to your shaft spline count
  • Transmission cooler and lines flushed, or replaced if the old unit failed with debris

Cost and Effort Framing

The parts spend on a 47RE rebuild scales in fairly predictable steps. An overhaul kit is the cheapest category by a wide margin because it contains no friction content. A master kit roughly triples that because you are buying every friction, steel and band. A performance super kit with GPZ frictions and Kolene steels sits above the master kit again, and the hard-part upgrades — billet servo, big input shaft, upgraded converter, valve body work — can individually exceed the cost of the kit they are being installed alongside.

Labor is the constant. The 47RE has to come out of the truck regardless of which kit you choose, and that is the same removal, teardown, cleaning, measuring and reassembly whether you install the cheapest overhaul kit or the most expensive performance package. That is precisely why buying too little kit is the expensive mistake — the difference in parts cost between tiers is small compared to doing the same job twice.

For the full teardown sequence, see our 47RE rebuild guide for the Dodge Cummins four-speed. If you are not certain which unit is actually in your truck, start with 47RE vs 48RE differences, identification and upgrade path before ordering anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 47RE master kit and an overhaul kit?

An overhaul kit contains only gaskets, seals and sealing rings — no friction plates, steels or bands. A master kit adds the complete friction and steel content plus both bands and typically the filter. For any rebuild where the clutches are worn or the history is unknown, the master kit is the correct starting point.

Do I need GPZ frictions and Kolene steels in my 47RE?

Only if the truck makes more than stock power or works hard. Raybestos recommends its GPZ super rebuild kit specifically for high-stress diesel, towing and enhanced-performance applications with increased horsepower and torque, and states GPZ material outperforms OE by as much as 20 percent with performance that improves as power increases. On a stock-tune truck that mostly commutes, standard master-kit content is adequate.

How much torque can a rebuilt 47RE handle?

Raybestos rates the 47RE at 450 lb-ft from the factory, compared to up to 570 lb-ft for the 48RE that replaced it. A rebuild with upgraded friction material, Kolene steels and hard-part upgrades raises real-world capacity, but the case, shaft and drum are still 47RE parts — which is why builds targeting serious power move to a stronger input shaft rather than relying on the friction kit alone.
