Allison 1000 P0894: Transmission Component Slipping - Real Cause

P0894 on an Allison 1000 means slip detected internally - but the TCM does not tell you WHICH clutch is slipping. Here is the diagnostic path.

What P0894 means

Definition:

  • Transmission component slipping
  • Generic OBD-II code
  • TCM detected actual gear ratio differs from commanded
  • Delta exceeded threshold (typically 7%)

What it does NOT tell you:

  • Which clutch is slipping
  • How much it is slipping
  • Mechanical or hydraulic cause

Why Allison sets P0894

TCM monitors:

  • Input shaft speed sensor
  • Output shaft speed sensor
  • Calculated gear ratio per gear

When ratio off:

  • P0894 sets
  • Sometimes specific code instead (P0731-P0736)
  • P0894 = generic catch-all

Top causes in order

1. Worn C2 clutch pack:

2. Worn C3 clutch pack:

  • 2nd common failure
  • Slip in 3rd, 4th, 5th gear
  • Towing-induced wear

3. Low line pressure:

  • Worn pump
  • Worn pressure regulator
  • Clutches apply slightly slipping

4. Solenoid wear:

  • Specific shift solenoid sticking
  • Apply pressure low to specific clutch

5. Speed sensor wear:

  • Output sensor reads incorrectly
  • False slip detection
  • Easiest to rule out first

Diagnosis sequence

Step 1: Pull all DTCs

  • Look for additional codes beyond P0894
  • P0731-P0736 = specific gear identifies clutch
  • P0716, P0722 = speed sensor

Step 2: TCM live data

  • Read commanded vs actual gear ratio
  • Read input/output shaft RPM
  • Identify which gear shows slip

Step 3: Pressure test

  • Tee gauge into line pressure port
  • Spec: 75-220 PSI
  • Low pressure = pump/regulator

Step 4: Fluid analysis

  • Drain sample to clear bottle
  • Dark/burnt = clutch wear
  • Metal flakes = bigger problem

Which gear identifies which clutch

Slip in 1st:

  • C1 clutch or P1 planetary

Slip in 2nd:

  • C1 + C5 or C1 + C4

Slip in 3rd:

  • C3 + C5

Slip in 4th:

  • C2 + C5 (most common)

Slip in 5th:

  • C2 + C3

Slip in reverse:

  • C2 + C4 + C5

Fix paths by cause

Single clutch worn:

  • Rebuild that specific clutch
  • $2000-$3500 (trans R&R + clutch)
  • Less than full rebuild

Multiple clutches slipping:

Low pressure (worn pump):

  • Pump rebuild $400-$800 parts
  • Combined labor with R&R
  • Often paired with clutch wear

Speed sensor:

  • Replace output sensor $40-$80
  • Easy fix if it is the cause
  • Rule out before teardown

HD upgrade considerations

During rebuild, upgrade:

  • HD C2 clutch pack (6 friction)
  • HD C3 clutch pack
  • HD torque converter
  • HD line pressure tune

Cost adder:

Prevention going forward

Service religiously:

HD trans cooler:

  • Drops temp 30-50 F
  • Doubles clutch life

HD tune:

  • Higher line pressure
  • Better clutch apply
  • Recommended for any tuned Duramax

Bottom line

P0894 alone tells you nothing actionable:

  • Need TCM live data
  • Need additional codes
  • Need pressure test

Most common outcome:

  • C2 clutch worn
  • Full or partial rebuild
  • Plan $3000-$8000
