700R4 vs 5R110W: Differences, Strength, and Which One to Choose
These two transmissions almost never end up on the same shopping list, and that is exactly why the comparison is worth making. The GM 700R4 is a compact, cable-controlled four-speed overdrive from the early 1980s that still lives under a huge number of hot rods, square-body trucks and swap projects. The Ford 5R110W TorqShift is a heavy, fully electronic five-speed built for diesel Super Duty trucks. If you are cross-shopping them, you are almost certainly deciding between two different philosophies: a light, simple, tunable-by-hand unit versus a heavy, computer-managed tow unit rated for diesel torque.
This guide lays out the real specifications from published sources, what each unit actually breaks, what a rebuild involves, and how to pick.

The single biggest difference: how each one decides to shift
This is the difference that drives everything else. Sonnax describes it plainly in its 700-R4 build guide: the 700R4 uses a cast iron valve body with a throttle cable and a mechanical governor determining shift points, while the later electronic units use an aluminum valve body with computer-controlled solenoids actuating the shifts (Sonnax).
The 5R110W sits at the far opposite end. It runs seven electronic shift solenoids controlling all transmission functions, per DieselHub. It also does something no cable transmission can: it changes its own shift sequence based on temperature. Under normal conditions it shifts 1-2-3-5-6, but below roughly 5°F it commands an alternate sequence using the 1.09:1 fourth gear to help the engine and transmission warm up.
Practically, that means:
- 700R4 can run standalone with no computer at all. Shift points and line pressure are adjusted mechanically — TV cable adjustment, springs, valve body work, drilled feed orifices.
- 5R110W cannot run without its TCM/PCM. There is no cable to adjust. Shift feel changes come from tuning, valve body work and solenoid replacement.
Strength and intended duty
The 5R110W is not in the same weight class, and it was never meant to be. Ford rated it for a maximum transmission input of 1,100 lb-ft, which accounts for torque multiplication through the converter. It was installed behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke diesels in 2003–2010 Super Duty trucks (excluding the 2003 model year 7.3L), and the "W" in the name refers to its wide ratio spread — a 3.11:1 first for pulling a load off the line, and a 0.71:1 top gear for highway cruise.
The 700R4 is a lighter unit at roughly 200 lbs dry versus about 295 lbs wet for the TorqShift. It is not weak, though. Sonnax states the 700R4 is "still very capable in many applications up to about 750HP" when built with the right components, and it lists the specific parts that get it there: a line pressure booster kit, heavy duty reaction shaft kit, Smart-Tech input housing with heavy duty input shaft, SmartShell heavy duty reaction shell kit, a 2nd Gear Super Hold servo, a 4th Gear Super Hold dual servo, and an extra wide Kevlar intermediate band (part 77700-01K).
So the honest framing is: the 700R4 is a high-ceiling build platform. The 5R110W is a high-capacity stock unit. If you want big torque capacity without touching internals, the Ford unit already has it. If you want a light, compact overdrive you can build up over time, the GM unit gets there with parts.
What actually fails on each
700R4: line pressure and the 3-4 clutch
The classic 700R4 failure chain starts with throttle valve pressure, not with the clutches themselves. Sonnax notes that the OE throttle valve spring is weak and can result in low line rise, insufficient throttle pressure and, ultimately, 3-4 clutch failure. Separately, the steel throttle valve plunger reciprocates in an aluminum sleeve and wears it, letting throttle valve feed oil leak past the plunger and exhaust — again producing poor line rise and problematic downshifts. Sonnax also flags that in most cable-controlled GM and Ford transmissions, including the 700R4, the throttle valve cable pulls out of adjustment at wide open throttle.
The symptom list Sonnax attaches to its oversized pressure regulator valve (part 77917-06) is a good diagnostic checklist for a tired 700R4: erratic line pressure, low line rise, clutch slippage, excess pump noise, and 3-4 clutch failure. Its servo release check valve kit (77701-076) is listed as helping cure reduced 3-4 clutch life, poor 2-3 shift feel, and 3-2 bind-up.
The takeaway for a DIY rebuild: if you replace burned 3-4 clutches and do nothing about line pressure and TV cable adjustment, you will burn the new ones too.
5R110W: converter first, then valve body and solenoids
BD Diesel identifies the torque converter as the most common 5R110W failure point, describing the stock unit as a single-disc clutch with a stamped cover and plastic stator that cannot handle increased power or sustained towing. The failure cascade from there is important: converter debris scores the gear pump, which creates internal leaks and reduced line pressure, which in turn starves the clutches.
BD also calls out soft aluminum valve body bores that wear over time and cause pressure loss, and a solenoid pack that fails electronically or mechanically, producing harsh or delayed shifts and erratic shift behavior. On the friction side, the direct, forward and overdrive clutches wear under high heat and torque. DieselHub adds the field diagnostic: excessive clutch material or metal filings in the pan indicate the unit has failed internally.
The practical difference is where you look first. On a 700R4 you go to hydraulics and the TV circuit. On a 5R110W you go to the converter, the pan, and the solenoid pack.
The fix: what to buy for each
Rebuilding a 700R4. Because the failure is usually pressure-driven rather than purely friction-driven, buy at the scope of a full teardown rather than a bare friction set — you want the valve body and servo circuits open on the same job. Servicing a 5R110W. If the pan is clean and the complaint is shift quality, start with fluid and filter service before you condemn anything. The 5R110W Transmission Filter Kit for 2003–2007 (OEM 3C3Z7A098AA) is the correct service part for the 6.0L-era trucks. Use MERCON SP — it is the specified fluid for this unit and substituting generic ATF is a known way to create shift complaints you did not have. If the pan comes down full of clutch material or metal filings, stop servicing and plan a rebuild plus a converter; per BD Diesel, leaving a failed converter in place is what scores the pump and takes the rest of the unit with it.
Replace while you are in there
On a 700R4 teardown:
- 3-4 clutch pack — assume it is burned, and fix the pressure cause before reassembly
- Intermediate band (a wide Kevlar band is the common durability upgrade)
- 2nd gear servo and 4th gear servo
- Pump slide spring and rear stator support bushing
- Reaction shell — the stock shell is a well-known wear item Sonnax builds a heavy duty replacement for
- TV cable, and set the adjustment properly on first road test
On a 5R110W teardown:
- Torque converter, every time, if there was any debris in the pan
- Filter and pan gasket
- Solenoid pack, if shifts were erratic, harsh or delayed before teardown
- Direct, forward and overdrive clutch packs
- Pump inspection for scoring from converter debris
- Valve body inspection for bore wear at the pressure-critical circuits
Cost and effort framing
The two jobs are not comparable in labor. A 700R4 is a roughly 200-lb aluminum unit in a car or light truck, usually with generous under-hood and under-body access. A competent DIY rebuild on a stand is a realistic weekend for someone with a decent tool set and a manual, and R&R is typically in the range of a long day.
The 5R110W is a heavy diesel-truck transmission at roughly 295 lbs with fluid, bolted to a Power Stroke in a Super Duty. Removal alone requires a proper transmission jack and, on many configurations, dropping or unbolting components for clearance. Most owners treat the 5R110W as a shop job and handle only the fluid-and-filter service themselves. Filter service on a 5R110W is genuinely DIY-friendly; a full rebuild generally is not.
Parts cost tracks the same split. A 700R4 rebuild kit plus a converter is a modest bill. A 5R110W rebuild that includes an upgraded converter and a solenoid pack is substantially more, which is why catching it at the fluid-and-filter stage matters so much on these trucks.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the 700R4 if you are building a GM car or light truck, want a compact overdrive that can run without a computer, and are willing to do hydraulic work to raise its capacity. It is the right answer for swaps, hot rods, and any project where the simplicity of cable control is a feature rather than a limitation.
Choose the 5R110W if you are working on a 2003–2010 Ford Super Duty with a 6.0L or 6.4L Power Stroke. In that application there is no real choice to make — it is the transmission the truck came with, it is rated for 1,100 lb-ft of input torque out of the box, and its wide ratio spread is built around towing.
These are not competitors. They are two ends of the automatic transmission design range, and the correct pick is almost always dictated by what is already in the vehicle.
FAQ
Can you swap a 5R110W into a GM truck in place of a 700R4?
Not as a practical bolt-in. The 5R110W has a Ford bellhousing pattern, is a fully electronic unit that requires its own TCM/PCM control strategy, and weighs roughly 95 lbs more than a 700R4. It also requires MERCON SP fluid. The engineering effort to make it work in a GM chassis vastly exceeds simply building the 700R4 or moving to a GM electronic overdrive unit.
Why does my 700R4 keep burning the 3-4 clutches?
Almost always because line pressure is not rising with throttle. Sonnax attributes low line rise and 3-4 clutch failure to a weak OE throttle valve spring and to wear of the aluminum throttle valve plunger sleeve, which lets TV feed oil leak past and exhaust. A TV cable that has pulled out of adjustment at wide open throttle produces the same result. Fix the pressure circuit and the cable adjustment when you replace the clutches, or the new set will burn as well.
Is the 5R110W really a five-speed or a six-speed?
It is marketed and named as a five-speed, but it has six available forward ratios. Under normal conditions it shifts 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th, skipping the 1.09:1 fourth. That fourth ratio is commanded as part of an alternate cold-weather sequence when ambient temperature drops below about 5°F, to help warm the engine and transmission.
