5R110W TorqShift Guide: Ford Powerstroke Transmission

The 5R110W TorqShift was Ford's heavy-duty 5-speed automatic behind the 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke diesels from 2003-2010. It's a strong transmission, but tuning and HD towing find its limits. Here's the complete guide.

5R110W basics

  • 5-speed automatic with overdrive
  • Years: 2003-2010 production
  • Applications: F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 with 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke
  • Torque capacity: ~750 ft-lb stock
  • Replaced: E4OD / 4R100
  • Replaced by: 6R140 TorqShift in 2011+

Common 5R110W failures

1. Direct clutch wear

The #1 failure point. Direct clutch sees brunt of diesel torque.

Fix: HD direct clutch during rebuild with extra plates where possible.

2. OD direct clutch burn (tuned applications)

Overdrive direct clutch fails in tuned trucks.

Fix: HD OD clutch pack mandatory for tuned applications.

3. Input shaft failure (severely tuned)

Stock input shaft twists at 900+ ft-lb.

Fix: Billet input shaft for any tuned truck.

4. Solenoid pack failure

Internal pack fails at 100K+ miles.

Fix: OEM Motorcraft replacement.

5. TCC apply piston wear

Common diesel automatic issue.

Fix: Updated TCC apply piston during rebuild.

6. Valve body wear

Aluminum bore wear over time.

Fix: Sonnax bore correction kits.

7. Pump wear

HD use accelerates pump wear.

Fix: Pump rebuild during major service.

5R110W vs 6R140 differences

5R110W (5-speed)

  • Up to 2010 production
  • 5 forward gears
  • ~750 ft-lb stock
  • Older electronics

6R140 (6-speed)

  • 2011+ production (behind 6.7L)
  • 6 forward gears
  • ~850 ft-lb stock
  • Updated electronics, better fuel economy

For high-HP applications: 6R140 is the better starting platform. 5R110W can be built strong but newer 6R140 is more refined.

Brand recommendations

Master rebuild kits

  • Alto (Power Pack, Red Eagle)
  • Raybestos (Stage-1, GPZ)
  • Transtec (gaskets and seals)
  • Precision International (mid-tier acceptable)

HD upgrades

  • Sonnax (billet input shafts, PR valve kits, bore correction)
  • ATI (HD bands, performance components)
  • BD Diesel (5R110W performance specialists)
  • Suncoast (performance valve bodies)

Solenoid packs

  • Motorcraft (OEM equivalent — recommended)
  • Quality aftermarket
  • Borg-Warner

Torque converters

  • Suncoast Converters
  • BD Diesel
  • Goerend Transmission
  • ATS Diesel
  • Race-grade from specialty diesel builders

Common rebuild mistakes

Mistake 1: Stock parts in tuned trucks

Most expensive mistake. Stock-spec build + tuned Powerstroke = failure in 25-50K miles.

Mistake 2: Cheap torque converter

Diesel torque demands quality converter. Cheap converter = early failure.

Mistake 3: Reusing input shaft on tuned trucks

Stock input fails. Billet is mandatory.

Mistake 4: Skipping cooler upgrade

Powerstroke in tow application needs external cooler upgrade.

Mistake 5: Wrong fluid

5R110W uses Mercon LV (originally Mercon V, but Mercon V is discontinued; Mercon LV is current spec).

Fluid

  • Spec: Mercon LV (current)
  • Capacity: ~17 quarts total, ~7 quarts in pan
  • Service: 30K severe, 50K normal

Cooler considerations

The 5R110W in HD tow application benefits significantly from external cooler upgrade:

  • B&M, Hayden, Tru-Cool MAX options
  • 35,000+ GVW rated for HD F-250/350 applications
  • External cooler with fan for stop-and-go

Cost summary

DIY rebuild:

  • Stock: $1,200-1,800
  • Tow: $1,800-2,800
  • Mild tune: $2,500-3,800
