700R4 vs 10R80: Differences and Which One to Choose
This is a cross-brand comparison, and that is exactly why people search it. On one side is the GM 700R4, the hydraulically controlled four-speed overdrive that put an overdrive gear behind millions of small blocks starting in 1982. On the other is the Ford 10R80, the ten-speed that showed up in 2017 and is now the default automatic behind the F-150 and the Mustang GT. If you are building a classic truck or a swap car and trying to decide between an old-school overdrive and a modern ten-speed, or if you own both and want to know why one is a driveway rebuild and the other is not, here is the honest breakdown.
The short answer
Choose the 700R4 if the vehicle is carbureted or pre-OBD, if you want a transmission that shifts without a computer, and if you want to be able to rebuild it yourself with hand tools. Choose the 10R80 if you are working on a 2017-or-newer Ford that already has one, or if you are doing a modern-drivetrain swap where the engine, the transmission control module and the CAN network all come over together. There is no scenario where you swap a 10R80 into a carbureted classic and call it easy.
Gear ratios and ratio spread
This is where the two units are furthest apart. Per DieselHub's TH700R4 specification page, the 700R4 runs:
- 1st: 3.059:1
- 2nd: 1.625:1
- 3rd: 1.00:1
- 4th: 0.696:1
- Reverse: 2.294:1
That deep 3.059 first gear and roughly 30 percent overdrive is the whole reason the 700R4 replaced the TH350 in so many builds. First-to-fourth works out to about a 4.4:1 spread.
DieselHub's 10R80/10L80 page lists the ten-speed as 4.70, 2.99, 2.15, 1.80, 1.52, 1.28, 1.00, 0.85, 0.69 and 0.64, with a 4.87:1 reverse. Ford Component Sales publishes the ratio span as 7.4:1 and the converter stall torque multiplication as 1.82:1.
Practically: the 10R80 has a deeper first gear than the 700R4 and three overdrive ratios instead of one, with 7th being the 1:1. That is why a 10R80 truck can pull a trailer off the line and still turn low cruise RPM on the highway. The 700R4 has to do both jobs with four ratios, which is why rear axle gear choice matters so much more on a 700R4 build.
How each one decides when to shift
The 700R4 is hydraulic. Shift timing and shift feel come from line pressure, governor pressure and throttle pressure fed by the TV cable. Sonnax's technical article on 4L60 (700-R4) accumulator valve codes walks through this: accumulator pressure is regulated in relation to engine torque, so heavier throttle demands greater apply pressure and produces a quicker apply rate, while light throttle gives lower pressure and a slower apply rate. Sonnax notes that in 700-R4 applications the lower pressure curves (codes K, N and A) give a lighter shift and the higher curves (codes B, M and L) give a firmer shift, and that swapping in a stronger-than-OE accumulator valve spring during a rebuild pushes the curve up and firms the shifts.
The same article explains the 2-4 servo: it applies the 2-4 band in 2nd using 2nd clutch line pressure on the 2nd apply piston, and in 4th using 2nd clutch and 4th pressures on both pistons. Sonnax states that larger servo pistons allow greater holding power and reduce 3-4 clutch and 2-4 band failures. That is the single most common upgrade on a 700R4 rebuild and it is worth doing while the unit is apart.
The 10R80 has none of that. It is fully electronically controlled, with solenoid-regulated clutch apply managed by a transmission control module. There is no TV cable, no governor and no mechanical connection between your right foot and shift timing.
The known wear point on each unit
700R4: the 3-4 clutch pack and the 2-4 band. Because throttle pressure is cable-driven, a TV cable that is out of adjustment does not just change shift feel, it changes line pressure, and low line pressure burns the 3-4 clutches. This is the failure that gives a 700R4 the classic "slips in overdrive" complaint. If you are rebuilding one, the servo and the accumulator valve work above are not optional extras, they are the fix.
10R80: the latch valves. Sonnax's article "Why Every 10-Speed Rebuild Needs Latch Valve Attention" states there are four latch valves in the Ford 10R60 and 10R80 and GM Gen. 1 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90 (two in the 10R140), and that they are prone to wear from continuous back-and-forth motion plus significant side loading from the high pressures they handle. Sonnax describes the consequences directly: leakage from bore wear allows regulated line pressure to exhaust past the spring and clip, "leading to erratic shifts, delayed engagement, solenoid codes and even burnt clutches," and a valve stuck in the latch position causes extremely harsh shifts along with bind-up. Sonnax also reports the spring buckling and hogging out the bore badly enough that failing to address it results in an immediate comeback.
Their published test spec: a vacuum reading of 16 in-Hg or higher at all three latch valve locations, with the bore sealed by your thumb, plus a flashlight inspection for spring-buckling damage. Repair parts listed for the 10R60/10R80 and GM Gen. 1 10L60/10L80/10L90 are drop-in latch valve stem repair kit 105740-47K and oversized latch valve kit 105740-71K. Sonnax notes these will not work in 2023-and-later units with casting numbers starting with PC3P.
Fluid, capacity and physical size
DieselHub lists the 700R4 as DEXRON VI with an 8.8 to 11.4 quart capacity depending on application, roughly 200 lbs dry, 23.375 inches overall, cast aluminum case, 27-spline input on the earliest units and 30-spline from 1984 on.
For the ten-speed, DieselHub lists Motorcraft ULV ATF in Ford applications and DEXRON ULV in GM applications, roughly 13 quarts, and about 230 pounds dry. Ford Component Sales publishes 234 lbs and 13 quarts of Mercon ULV. Do not substitute conventional ATF in a 10R80. ULV is a much thinner fluid than DEXRON VI and the ten-speed's hydraulics and pump loads are designed around that viscosity.
Which one to actually choose
Classic GM truck, muscle car or hot rod: 700R4, every time. It bolts to the standard Chevy bellhousing pattern, it does not need a computer, and the entire aftermarket is built around it. Budget for a proper TV cable setup and a rear gear that matches the 0.696 overdrive.
2017-up F-150, Mustang GT, Ranger or Bronco: you already have the 10R80. The decision is not which transmission, it is whether to service the valve body and latch valves now or wait for burnt clutches later.
Modern engine swap into an older chassis: the ten-speed can be done, but you are committing to a TCM, a wiring harness, a CAN network and an electronic shifter. The parts that actually fix each one

700R4: 3-4 clutch pack, 2-4 band, 2-4 servo (larger piston), accumulator valve and spring, front pump seal and bushing, filter and pan gasket, TV cable if the original is stretched or frayed.
10R80: all four latch valves or their repair kits, the full friction and steel set, filter and pan gasket, pump seals, and every valve body bore that fails the 16 in-Hg vacuum check.
Cost and effort framing
A 700R4 is a hand-tool rebuild. The special tooling list is short, the service information has been public for forty years, and no scan tool is required to put the vehicle back on the road. A competent home rebuilder can do one over a weekend.
A 10R80 is not that. It is a wet-clutch ten-speed with a valve body full of precision bores, and it needs a capable scan tool for the adaptive learn procedure after service. Between the higher parts count, the ULV fluid volume and the diagnostic requirement, the effort and expense are in a different bracket. FAQ
Can a 10R80 bolt to a Chevy small block? Not without an adapter. The 10R80 uses Ford bellhousing patterns. Beyond the mechanical fit you still need the TCM, harness and network to make it shift at all.
Is the 10R80 the same as the GM 10L80? They come from a joint program. DieselHub states the 10R80/10L80 is the result of a collaboration between Ford and General Motors, with Ford leading the ten-speed design and GM leading the related nine-speed, and both manufacturers agreeing to use each other's designs. The published gear ratios are identical, but the control strategy, calibration and many service parts differ between the Ford and GM versions, so do not assume parts interchange without verifying the specific casting.
Will a 700R4 handle a modern LS? Behind a stock or mild LS, yes, with the servo and clutch upgrades done and the TV cable set correctly. The 0.696 overdrive is the limiting factor for cruise RPM, not the clutch capacity, so pick rear gearing accordingly.
