Identification

Look at the case:

  • 6L90 case slightly longer
  • 6L90 has additional ribs
  • Sometimes stamped on case

Look at the VIN tag:

  • Pan tag stamped 6L80 or 6L90
  • Sometimes faded - check service records

Look at the truck application:

  • 2500/3500 = 6L90
  • 1500 = 6L80
  • SUVs = 6L80

Internal differences

Planetary gear count:

  • 6L80: 4-pinion planetaries
  • 6L90: 5-pinion planetaries
  • Spreads load over more teeth
  • Better torque capacity

Clutch pack capacity:

  • 6L80: 5 frictions in 3-5-R
  • 6L90: 6 frictions in 3-5-R
  • Adds 20% capacity

Hub strength:

  • 6L90 hubs forged steel
  • 6L80 hubs stamped/cast
  • Major difference for HP

Input shaft:

  • 6L80: smaller diameter
  • 6L90: larger diameter
  • 20% more torque capacity
