The 6L80 stator support is a wear point that kills pump pressure and takes the bushing with it. Catch it early or replace at rebuild.
What the stator support does
- Supports the stator splines (one-way clutch races)
- Carries pump fluid to the torque converter
- Houses pump bushings
- Reacts torque from 1st and reverse
Symptoms of stator support wear
Pressure drop:
- Low line pressure (especially when hot)
- Soft / late shifts
- P0868 line pressure low code
Converter shudder:
- TCC shudder at lockup
- Worsens as fluid gets hot
- Often confused with TCC clutch wear
Pump bushing failure:
- Metal in pan (brass particles = pump bushing)
- Front pump leak
- Read our transmission pan inspection
Why it wears
- Aluminum support, steel races
- Galling when fluid degrades
- Made worse by extended fluid intervals
- HP applications accelerate failure
Replacement options
OEM stator support:
- $150-$250 part
- Same wear pattern repeats
- Good for stock + light-duty
HD stator support:
- Sonnax / TransTec upgraded
- Hardened wear surfaces
- $250-$450 part
- Right call for HD truck or performance use
What you need:
- Stator support
- Pump bushing kit
- Front seal + gasket
- TCC seal kit (do it now)
Install notes
- Pull trans, drop pan, remove valve body
- Pull pump assembly
- Stator support unbolts from pump body
- Inspect pump rotor + slide for wear at same time
When to replace vs leave alone
Replace if:
- Low pressure DTC
- TCC shudder
- Visible wear at stator bore
- Rebuild over 150k miles
Leave alone if:
- Stock pressure good
- No metal in pan
- Bushing tight in stator support
Cost
DIY stator + bushing only:
- $250-$450 parts
- 8-12 hours labor (trans out)
Full pump rebuild w/ stator:
- $500-$800 parts
- Most rebuilders include in major rebuild
