Drive (D) - Normal Mode

What it does:

  • Standard shift schedule
  • Optimized for fuel economy
  • Earlier upshifts
  • Later downshifts
  • TCC engages early
  • Best for:

  • Daily driving
  • Highway cruise
  • Unloaded driving
  • Maximum MPG
  • Tow/Haul Mode

    What it does:

  • Higher RPM hold (later upshifts)
  • Earlier downshift under load
  • TCC engages firmer and earlier
  • Grade braking (auto downshift on hills)
  • Less gear hunting under load
  • Best for:

  • Towing trailers (especially over 4,000 lbs)
  • Heavy bed loads
  • Mountain driving (grade descent)
  • Boat ramp launches
  • When NOT to use:

  • Unloaded daily driving (wastes fuel)
  • City stop-and-go (excess shifting)
  • Light highway cruise
  • Sport Mode (some trim levels)

    What it does:

  • Holds gears longer for performance
  • Faster shift response
  • Sharper throttle map (some configurations)
  • Higher RPM at WOT
  • Best for:

  • Spirited driving
  • Mountain road performance driving
  • Track / autocross use
  • When NOT to use:

  • Daily commuting (fuel cost)
  • Heavy tow (use Tow/Haul instead)
  • Tight city traffic
  • Manual Mode (M+/-)

    What it does:

  • Driver selects gear via shifter
  • +/- buttons or shifter tap
  • TCM still has authority for safety
  • Wont over-rev engine
  • Best for:

  • Engine braking on long grades
  • Locking out high gears for towing
  • Off-road sustained gear (4WD low)
  • Track driving
  • Mode comparison for common scenarios

    City commute (unloaded):

  • Use: Drive (D)
  • Avoid: Sport, Tow/Haul
  • Highway cruise (light tow):

  • Use: Tow/Haul
  • Improves shift quality + TCC apply
  • Mountain descent (loaded trailer):

  • Use: Tow/Haul + Manual downshift
  • Engine braking saves brake fade
  • Boat ramp:

  • Use: Tow/Haul + 1st gear manual
  • Better control, less wheel slip
  • Track day:

  • Use: Sport mode
  • Manual shift in slower corners
  • Off-road / rock crawl:

  • Use: 4WD Low + Manual mode 1st
  • Tow/Haul if heavy load
  • Effect on trans life

    Tow/Haul saves trans:

  • Less TCC slip = less heat
  • Better gear hold under load
  • Reduces clutch wear
  • Critical for tow rigs
  • Sport mode neutral:

  • Higher revs but harder shifts
  • Marginal effect on trans life
  • Unless track use sustained
  • Always-on Tow/Haul daily:

  • Extra wear from unnecessary shifts
  • Slightly worse MPG
  • Not recommended without load
  • Common driver mistakes

    Tow/Haul off while towing:

  • #1 cause of Allison TCC failure (similar issue with 6L80)
  • Stock mode cant handle sustained load
  • Reduces clutch life dramatically
  • Tow/Haul always on:

  • Wastes 1-2 MPG on light driving
  • Extra mechanical wear
  • Engages and disengages constantly
  • Sport mode for daily driving:

  • Worse MPG (2-3)
  • Annoying gear hold
  • Better trans life if you back off
  • Manual mode left in low gear:

  • Engine over-rev possible
  • Worse fuel consumption
  • Heat buildup
  • Tow/Haul activation checklist

    Engage Tow/Haul BEFORE:

  • Hooking up trailer
  • Starting downhill grade
  • Boat ramp launch
  • Mountain pass approach
  • Heavy load operation
  • Disengage AFTER:

  • Unhooking trailer
  • Returning to flat highway
  • Empty bed driving
  • What button to look for

    Tow/Haul button:

  • Usually on shifter handle (column)
  • Or on column near steering wheel
  • Light illuminates dash icon when active
  • Sport mode:

  • Center stack button (some trims)
  • Or selector position on rotary dial
  • Manual mode:

  • Shifter to M position
  • OR + / - buttons on shifter handle
  • Long-term cost of mode misuse

    Tow/Haul forgotten on tow trips:

  • Trans rebuild at 80k miles vs 200k
  • Cost: $4,000-$6,500 sooner
  • Sport mode always-on:

  • Extra 1-2 MPG fuel waste
  • Over 100,000 miles: $1,000-$2,000 extra fuel
  • Manual mode forgot in low gear:

  • Engine wear from sustained high RPM
  • Variable cost (engine damage potential)
  • Pair with HD aux cooler for tow

    • Tow/Haul + aux cooler = optimal protection
    • Trans temp drops 30-50F under load
    • Doubles trans life on tow rigs

    Quick reference card

Drive (D): default mode for daily

Tow/Haul: ANY trailer or heavy load

    Sport: enthusiastic driving only

    Manual: grade braking, off-road, track
