6L80 Pump Rebuild: Wear Patterns and HD Options

The 6L80 pump generates line pressure for the entire trans. When it wears, line pressure drops and the whole trans suffers. Here's the complete rebuild guide.

6L80 pump basics

The 6L80 pump:

  • Belt-driven from the torque converter
  • Generates 50-200 PSI line pressure (varies by conditions)
  • Lubes all bearings and bushings
  • Powers all shift solenoids

When pump wears: less pressure available, shifts get sloppy, components wear faster from low lube.

Common wear points

1. Rotor wear

Inner and outer rotor faces wear against pump body. Internal bypass increases. Pressure drops.

2. Pump body bushing wear

Bushings allow rotor wobble. Increases internal leakage.

3. Stator support bushing

Wear at converter-side bushing. Affects converter mounting and pressure.

4. Pump body wear

Heavy use causes wear at sealing surfaces. Causes leaks.

5. PR valve bore (some pumps)

Some 6L80 pumps integrate PR valve. Bore wear common.

When to rebuild pump

Mandatory during rebuild:

Pump should be inspected and rebuilt or replaced during every 6L80 rebuild at 150K+ miles.

Diagnostic indicators:

  • Line pressure low under load
  • Whining from front of trans
  • Shift quality degraded
  • TCC issues from low pressure

Rebuild components

Standard pump rebuild:

  • All bushings
  • All seals
  • New gasket
  • Inspect rotor (replace if needed)

HD pump rebuild:

  • HD bushings
  • All seals
  • New gasket
  • HD rotor or new rotor
