Your 6L80 won't go in reverse. You put it in R and nothing happens. Forward gears might work fine, or might also be acting up. Here's the diagnostic path.
What "no reverse" means in 6L80 context
The 6L80 reverse circuit uses specific clutches. When it fails:
- Trans shifts in but doesn't move backward
- May make noise but no motion
- Forward gears may or may not be affected
- Stuck in any position when reverse attempted
Common causes
Cause 1: Range sensor (transmission range sensor) failure
The TRS tells TCM what gear is selected. Failed sensor = TCM doesn't know reverse is selected.
Symptoms: May also affect Park, Neutral indication. May have specific codes.
Fix: Replace transmission range sensor. $150-300 + labor.
Cause 2: Solenoid pack failure
Internal solenoid pack controls reverse clutch apply.
Symptoms: Multiple shift issues, possibly including loss of reverse.
Fix: Solenoid pack replacement. $400-700.
Cause 3: Reverse clutch pack wear
The actual reverse clutch pack has worn out.
Symptoms: Forward works fine. Reverse just won't engage. May progress from slipping reverse to no reverse.
Fix: Full rebuild. $2,500-4,500.
Cause 4: TCM strategy issue
TCM software issue or TCM failure.
Symptoms: No codes for sensor or solenoid, but reverse won't engage.
Fix: TCM update or replacement.
Cause 5: Pump pressure issue
Insufficient line pressure for reverse engagement.
Symptoms: Pressure-related code, possibly other shift issues.
Fix: Pump rebuild or PR valve correction.
Cause 6: Valve body wear
Reverse-related valve has worn bore.
Symptoms: Reverse selection but no engagement.
Fix: Sonnax bore correction kit or valve body replacement.
Diagnostic procedure
Step 1: Verify fluid
Low fluid causes lots of shift issues. Check level first.
Step 2: Pull codes
TRS codes, solenoid codes, pressure codes all relevant. Pull and document.
Step 3: Live scan tool data
What does TCM think? Commanded vs actual gear.
Step 4: Range selector test
Verify physical shift linkage moves properly. Manual shift in/out of reverse with engine off should engage detents.
Step 5: Pressure test
$50-150 at shop. Tells you if pressure capability is OK.
Step 6: Pan inspection
Reveals clutch wear material if internal failure.

- Range sensor failure
- Specific solenoid failure (single)
- Wiring issue
