The 4L80E intermediate band is the reaction component for 2nd gear engagement. Under HD tow or performance load, the factory band fails. Here's the HD path.
What the intermediate band does
The intermediate band wraps the intermediate clutch drum to provide the reaction surface for 2nd gear apply. The band is applied by hydraulic pressure through the servo piston system.
When operating: firm 1-2 shift, holds 2nd gear under load.
When failing: slip on 1-2 shift, flare, or burnt material in pan.

Failure modes
Band friction material burn:
Most common. Material burns off under HD tow load.
Band broken:
Severe failure under abuse. Pieces in pan.
Servo apply piston wear:
Servo wears, can't apply band properly.
Band anchor wear:
Less common but happens.
Symptoms
Early stage:
- Slip on 1-2 upshift
- Slight flare
- Higher RPM through 1st-2nd transition
Mid stage:
- Clear slip
- Possible no 2nd gear
- Code P0731 or related
Late stage:
- Burnt smell after driving
- Pan debris (burnt material)
