After a rear gear or tire size change, your 4L60E speedometer reads wrong. The fix is a new color-coded driven gear. Here's how.
What changes the speedo reading
- Rear gear ratio change
- Tire diameter change
- Transmission swap
- Any of these throws off speedometer

Calculate new gear needed
Formula:
- Stock gear teeth × (Old ratio / New ratio) × (Old tire / New tire)
Example:
- Stock 38-tooth, 3.42 rear, 29" tire
- Going to 4.10 rear, 31" tire
- New gear = 38 × (3.42/4.10) × (29/31) = 30 teeth (round to nearest available)

Where the gear lives
- Tail housing of 4L60E
- Driven by output shaft
- Drives VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
Replacement procedure
Tools:
- 10mm socket
- Drain pan (small fluid loss)
- New gear and o-ring
- Optional: housing seal
Steps:
1. Vehicle on jack stands
2. Locate VSS on tail housing
3. Remove 1 bolt holding retainer
4. Pull retainer + gear out
5. Note position of old gear
6. Install new gear with new o-ring
7. Reinstall retainer
8. Verify speedometer with GPS
Time: 15-30 minutes
Common mistakes
Wrong gear count:
- Use formula above
- GPS verify after
Damaged o-ring:
- Always replace
- Read our transmission seal vs gasket
Forgotten retainer:
- Gear walks out
- Major fluid leak

Cost
- Driven gear: $15-$30
- O-ring: $2
- DIY install: 30 minutes
Total: $20-$35 DIY
When to also reprogram TCM
Some 1996+ trucks:
- TCM uses VSS for shift timing
- Gear change alone may not fix
- Plus need tune for rear gear
Read our LS swap transmission guide
After install verification
GPS test:
- Drive constant speed
- Compare speedo to GPS
- Adjust gear if off
If speedo high:
- Need more teeth on driven gear
If speedo low:
- Need fewer teeth on driven gear
4L80E speedo gear (different)
- 4L80E uses electronic VSS only
- No mechanical driven gear
- TCM correction needed for ratio changes
