4L60E Shift Solenoid Kit: Complete Replacement Guide

The 4L60E uses 5 separate solenoids in the valve body. When shift problems hit, replacing them as a complete kit costs about the same as labor for one — and saves you a return trip.

The 5 solenoids in a 4L60E

1-2 shift solenoid (Sol A):

  • Controls 1-2 upshift
  • P0753 / P0751 if failed
  • 2-3 shift solenoid (Sol B):

  • Controls 2-3 upshift
  • P0758 / P0756 if failed
  • 3-2 control solenoid:

  • Controls 3-2 downshift quality
  • P1860 if failed
  • TCC solenoid (PWM):

  • Controls converter lockup
  • P0741 / P0742 if failed
  • Pressure Control Solenoid (PCS / EPC):

  • Controls line pressure
  • P0747 / P0748 / P0751 if failed
  • Why replace as a complete kit

    Labor amortization:

  • Drop pan, drop VB: same labor whether 1 or 5 solenoids
  • One trip vs five trips through coil pack
  • Save shop labor of 3-4 hours later
  • Failure clustering:

  • If 1 fails at 120k miles, others are close behind
  • Same heat exposure, same age
  • Statistically: second failure within 30k miles of first
  • Cost similar to single replacement:

  • Single solenoid: $30-$60 + 2-3 hrs labor
  • Full kit: $80-$160 + 2-3 hrs labor
  • Marginal cost: $50-$100 for full peace of mind
  • Replacement kit options

    OEM kit (AC Delco D86430A):

  • All 5 solenoids included
  • OEM quality, OEM warranty
  • $80-$160 kit
  • Borg Warner kit:

  • Same OEM-grade quality
  • Different name, often AC Delco supplier
  • $70-$150 kit
  • Aftermarket kit (Premium):

  • $50-$120 kit
  • Quality varies by source
  • Stick to known brands (Sonnax, Pioneer)
  • Avoid:

  • Generic eBay kits under $40 (Chinese clones)
  • Reused junkyard solenoids (already aging)
  • Single solenoids from unknown sources
  • Symptoms that say full kit replacement

    • P0753 + P0758 (both shift solenoids)
    • P0741 + harsh shifts (TCC + shift sol)
    • Multiple P-codes after fluid service
    • Intermittent shift issues over 100k miles
    • Trans goes into limp mode randomly

    Install

    • Drain pan
    • Drop pan (16 bolts)
    • Drop valve body (label all bolts!)
    • Solenoids unbolt from valve body
    • Remove old solenoids (note O-ring orientation)
    • Install new solenoids with new O-rings
    • Reinstall valve body (torque spec sequence)
    • Reinstall pan with new gasket and filter
    • Refill with Dexron VI (6-7 quarts)
    • Clear codes

    Always replace at same time

    • Pan gasket
    • Filter
    • EPC solenoid screen (clean or replace)
    • Valve body gasket

Critical: PCS / EPC solenoid orientation

    • EPC has very specific install direction
    • Note marking before removal
    • Wrong direction = no line pressure
    • Truck wont engage gears if backward

    Cost

    DIY full kit:

  • Full solenoid kit: $80-$160
  • Pan gasket: $15-$30
  • Filter: $15-$30
  • Fluid (Dexron VI, 6 qts): $50-$100
  • Time: 3-4 hours
  • Total: $160-$320
  • Shop full kit:

  • Parts: $80-$160
  • Labor: $250-$450
  • Pan gasket/filter/fluid: $100-$200
  • Total: $430-$810
  • When solenoid is NOT the fix

    • Valve body bore wear (Sonnax kit needed)
    • Worn 3-4 clutch pack (rebuild needed)
    • Bad VSS / TPS sending wrong signals to PCM
    • Bad PCM (rare, but check grounds first)

Pair with shift kit for full upgrade

    • Solenoid replacement = restore stock function
    • Shift kit = enhance shift quality + reduce slip
    • Combined: $200-$400 total parts
    • Most impact you can get without rebuild

    Reset after install

    • Disconnect battery 30 minutes (PCM relearn)
    • Or use scan tool to do KAM reset
    • Drive normally for 50-100 miles
    • PCM learns shift adapts

    Common pitfalls

    Pinching O-rings during install:

  • Lube O-rings with Dexron VI
  • Push straight in (no twist)
  • Mixing up solenoid positions:

  • Label connections before removal
  • 1-2 sol is closest to pan side
  • Forgetting EPC screen:

  • Tiny screen on EPC inlet
  • Easy to miss
  • Clogged screen = no pressure = no shifts
