What the reverse input drum does

  • Holds the reverse input clutch pack
  • Engages in reverse only
  • Receives input from the sun shell
  • Splines to the reverse input shaft

Symptoms of failure

Cracked drum:

  • Loss of reverse
  • Sometimes loud bang on reverse engagement
  • Pieces in pan after teardown

Worn splines:

  • Slips in reverse only
  • Sun shell wear accelerates
  • Sometimes intermittent (heat-related)

    • Why it fails

    Stock drum limitations:

    • Stock drum rated ~400 ft-lb
    • Reverse loads are 2-3x forward gear loads
    • Stock material is forgiving but fatigues

    Sun shell failure:

    • Stripped sun shell wallows the drum splines
    • Drum becomes loose on the shaft
    • Reverse slip and grind

    HP applications:

    • Stock drum splits on high-HP reverse engagement
    • Burnouts kill it
    • HD use shortens life

    Replacement parts

    OEM reverse input drum:

    • $120-$220 part
    • Same failure mode as before
    • Light-duty applications only

    HD aftermarket drum:

    • Sonnax billet
    • $300-$500 part
    • Rated 700+ ft-lb
    • Required for HD use

    Always replace with:

    Install

    • Trans must come out
    • Major teardown required
    • Pump assembly off, sun shell out
    • Reverse input drum lifts straight out
    • Inspect splines on input shaft for damage
