4L60E Pump Rebuild: Wear Patterns and HD Upgrade

The 4L60E pump is the heart of the hydraulic system. When it wears, line pressure drops and all downstream symptoms follow. Here's the rebuild guide.

What the 4L60E pump does

Functions:

  • Generates hydraulic pressure for all clutch apply
  • Lubricates internal components
  • Cools clutches via fluid flow

Vane wear (most common):

  • Vanes wear at tips and slots

Rotor wear:

  • Rotor face wear against pump body
  • Bore wear in some cases
  • Cause: high mileage

Pump body bore wear:

  • Pump cavity wears, rotors lose seal
  • Cause: contamination + miles

Stator support wear:

  • Sealing rings cut grooves
  • Pressure leak
  • Cause: high mileage + heat

Pump slide wear:

  • Slide wears at pivot points
  • Pump can't modulate properly
  • Cause: heat + miles

Symptoms of worn pump

Early stage:

Mid stage:

  • Mild slip in all gears
  • Soft shifts
  • Higher RPM in each gear

Diagnosis

Line pressure test (gold standard):

  • Idle in Park: should be 55-75 psi
  • Idle in Reverse: 95-120 psi
  • WOT in Drive: 150-180 psi
  • Low at idle = pump or PR valve
