The 4L60E pump is the heart of the hydraulic system. When it wears, line pressure drops and all downstream symptoms follow. Here's the rebuild guide.
What the 4L60E pump does
Functions:
- Generates hydraulic pressure for all clutch apply
- Lubricates internal components
- Cools clutches via fluid flow
- Drives TCC apply circuit
Pump components:
- Pump body (housing)
- Pump rotor (drives the fluid)
- Pump vanes
- Pump slide
- Pump cover (with seal rings)
- Stator support
When any wear:
- Line pressure drops
- Slipping in all gears
- Erratic shifts
- Eventually no drive

Common 4L60E pump wear
Vane wear (most common):
- Vanes wear at tips and slots
- Pump volume drops
- Pressure follows
- Cause: high mileage + degraded fluid
Rotor wear:
- Rotor face wear against pump body
- Bore wear in some cases
- Cause: high mileage
Pump body bore wear:
- Pump cavity wears, rotors lose seal
- Cause: contamination + miles
Stator support wear:
- Sealing rings cut grooves
- Pressure leak
- Cause: high mileage + heat
Pump slide wear:
- Slide wears at pivot points
- Pump can't modulate properly
- Cause: heat + miles
Symptoms of worn pump
Early stage:
- Low line pressure on test
- Slow engagement from Park
- Read our transmission line pressure testing guide
Mid stage:
- Mild slip in all gears
- Soft shifts
- Higher RPM in each gear
Late stage:
- Hard slip in all gears
- Sometimes no drive
- Burning frictions from low apply pressure
- Read our 4L60E slipping diagnosis
Diagnosis
Line pressure test (gold standard):
- Idle in Park: should be 55-75 psi
- Idle in Reverse: 95-120 psi
- WOT in Drive: 150-180 psi
- Low at idle = pump or PR valve
Read our transmission line pressure testing guide
Distinguish from PR valve wear:
- PR valve worn: low at idle, can sometimes boost at WOT
- Pump worn: low everywhere, can't generate pressure
- Read our Sonnax PR valve install guide
Pan inspection:
- Pump wear material in pan (aluminum dust)
- Read our transmission pan inspection guide
Pump rebuild parts
Standard rebuild kit:
- Pump rotors (new)
- Pump vanes (new)
- Pump slide (new)
- All seals and O-rings
- Sealing rings (Teflon or composite)
- Cost: $150-300
Sonnax HD pump kit:
- Includes standard parts plus:
- HD rotor set
- HD slide design
- Updated seals
- Cost: $300-500
Full pump assembly (reman):
- ACDelco reman: $400-700
- Quality aftermarket: $300-500
- For high-wear / damaged pumps
When to rebuild vs replace pump
Rebuild the pump if:
- Cavity wear minimal
- Pump body intact
- Standard wear items only
- Time invested in rebuild justifies parts
Replace the pump if:
- Cavity worn beyond limit
- Pump body cracked or porous
- Contamination damage extensive
- High mileage with multiple repair history
HD upgrade considerations
When stock pump is OK:
- Daily driver
- No heavy tow
- 100K mile rebuild scope
When HD pump upgrade is worth it:
- Tow rigs (mandatory)
- Performance build (any tune)
- Diesel applications
- High RPM use
- Read our diesel tow rig setup for HD parts list
Common 4L60E pump-related upgrades
Sonnax PR valve (highly recommended):
- Fixes pressure regulator valve bore wear
- Restores line pressure
- $80-150 part
- Read our Sonnax PR valve install guide
Sonnax boost valve:
- Improves WOT line pressure
- Reduces TCC slip
- $40-80 part
Updated stator support:
- Better sealing
- Reduced leakage
- $100-200 part
Installation considerations
Pump alignment:
- Critical for pump life
- Use service manual procedure
- Special tool may be required
- Read our 4L80E pump alignment guide (concept similar)
Sealing ring installation:
- Use specified type
- Lubricate with ATF only
- Don't twist during install
- Verify in correct groove
Endplay verification:
- Set per service manual
- Critical to pump life
- Selective washers if needed
Torque sequence:
- Follow specified pattern
- Don't over-torque cover bolts
- Verify with calibrated wrench
