EPC = electronic pressure control. When the EPC solenoid fails on a 4L60E, you get either bone-jarring shifts or marshmallow-soft slipping shifts. Here is how to spot it and fix it.

What the EPC solenoid does
Function:
- PWM-controlled solenoid
- Modulates line pressure based on engine load
- Light load = low pressure (soft shifts)
- Heavy load = high pressure (firm shifts)
How it works:
- PCM commands duty cycle
- Solenoid bleeds off pressure to set target
- Pressure regulator does the actual regulating
- EPC tells regulator what to do
Why it fails
Worn coil:
- Constant PWM cycling wears solenoid
- Typical mileage: 120k-180k
Stuck plunger:
- Varnish from dirty fluid
- Sticks open or closed
- Pressure goes max or minimum
Damaged screen:
Symptoms by failure mode
EPC stuck open (low pressure):
- Soft slipping shifts
- Flares between gears
- Slip under heavy throttle
- Fluid burns from slipping
EPC stuck closed (max pressure):
EPC intermittent:
Common DTCs
P0748 - EPC solenoid circuit electrical:
- Wiring or coil fault
- Most reliable EPC code
P0747 - EPC stuck on:
P1811 - max adapt and long shift:
Diagnosis
Step 1: Pressure test
- Tee gauge into line pressure port
- Idle in park: 60-90 PSI
- Idle in drive: 60-90 PSI
- WOT in drive: 180-220 PSI
- Way out of range = EPC suspect
Step 2: Resistance check
- Disconnect EPC connector
- Ohm across terminals
- Spec: 3-7 ohms
- Outside spec = bad coil
Step 3: PCM data
- Read EPC duty cycle commanded
- Should vary with throttle
- Stuck duty cycle = PCM problem
Replacement
OEM EPC solenoid:
- AC Delco 24230298 or similar
- $50-$110 part
- Always replace screen with it
HD aftermarket:
Always replace together:
Install steps
Trans does NOT come out:
- Pan drop only
- Valve body off (in vehicle)
- Solenoid is bolted to valve body
Procedure:
- Drain pan
- Drop pan (15-16 mm bolts)
- Remove valve body (15 + 10 mm)
- Disconnect solenoid harness
- Remove 2 retaining screws
- Pull solenoid out
- Install new with new O-rings
- Reverse for reassembly
- Torque valve body bolts in sequence (8-10 ft-lb)
Cost
DIY:
- EPC solenoid: $50-$140
- Pan gasket + filter: $35-$65
- Fluid: $40-$70
- Time: 3-4 hours
- Total: $125-$275
Shop:
- Parts: $125-$275

While you are in there
Recommended additions:
- Pressure regulator (Sonnax)
- Shift solenoids A and B
- TCC solenoid
- Shift kit
- Read our 4L60E solenoid kit
Why bundle:
- Labor is mostly the same
- Other solenoids likely worn too
- One trip vs three
What to avoid
Adaptive learn reset:
- Some shops claim this fixes EPC issues
- If solenoid is bad, reset does nothing
- Wasted shop visit
Fluid additives:
Bottom line
EPC failure is real and common:
- Easy DIY fix
- $200 total
- 3-4 hours
