What the 47RE bands do

Front (kickdown) band:

  • Applied in 2nd gear
  • Holds front planetary sun gear
  • Carries shift load 1-2

Rear (low/reverse) band:

  • Applied in reverse and manual low
  • Holds rear planetary carrier
  • Carries reverse torque load

When bands wear out

Typical mileage:

  • Stock truck: 150k-200k miles
  • Towing: 100k-150k miles
  • Tuned: 75k-120k miles

Mileage factors:

  • Frequent towing accelerates wear
  • Hot fluid kills band linings
  • Skipping adjustment makes worse

Symptoms of worn bands

Front band wear:

  • Slip on 1-2 upshift under load
  • RPM flare during shift
  • Sometimes harsh shift if servo wears

Rear band wear:

  • Slip in reverse under load
  • Truck struggles backing trailer
  • Squeal when applying brake in reverse

Band adjustment first

Often the cure:

  • Bands can be adjusted before replacement
  • Removes linkage slack
  • Restores apply pressure
  • Fixes slip without teardown

How to adjust front band:

  • Located on driver side of case
  • Loosen lock nut
  • Torque adjusting screw to 72 in-lb
  • Back off exactly 2-1/2 turns
  • Tighten lock nut to 25 ft-lb

How to adjust rear band:

  • Pan must come off
  • Located on valve body side of case
  • Loosen lock nut
  • Torque adjusting screw to 72 in-lb
  • Back off exactly 2 turns
  • Tighten lock nut to 30 ft-lb

When adjustment will not work

Lining wear:

  • Adjustment runs out
  • Lining worn to backing
  • Apply pressure drops

Band stretched:

  • Reverse band especially
  • Caused by HP abuse
  • Replacement required

Hard parts damaged:

  • Apply lever bent
  • Strut worn
