What the TV cable does

  • Connects throttle linkage to trans valve body
  • Controls line pressure based on throttle
  • More throttle = more pressure = firmer shifts
  • Less throttle = lower pressure = smoother shifts
  • Affects shift timing too

Symptoms of misadjusted TV cable

Too loose (cable too long):

  • Soft, slipping shifts
  • Burnt fluid (slip = heat)
  • Burnt clutches in months
  • Premature direct clutch failure
  • Too tight (cable too short):

  • Harsh, jarring shifts
  • Shifts at higher RPM than spec
  • Hard 1-2 shift
  • Possible damage to drum/clutches over time
  • Disconnected entirely:

  • Trans defaults to maximum pressure
  • Extremely harsh shifts
  • Will damage trans quickly
  • When to adjust TV cable

    After any of these:

  • Trans rebuild
  • Throttle body replacement
  • Throttle linkage repair
  • Engine swap
  • If shifts feel wrong (loose or harsh)
  • After 50k+ miles (cable stretches)
  • What you need

    Tools:

  • Helper (for throttle hold)
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 10mm wrench
  • Trans pan in good shape
  • Cost:

  • $0 - just adjustment
  • Or $50-$120 if cable needs replacement
  • Adjustment procedure

    Step 1: Locate TV cable

  • Engine bay
  • Goes from throttle body to trans
  • Look for adjuster at trans end
  • Step 2: Find the lock

  • Trans-end adjuster has spring-loaded lock
  • Press release tab to unlock
  • Cable slides freely once unlocked
  • Step 3: Set initial position

  • Helper holds throttle WIDE OPEN
  • Pull cable taut (full extension)
  • Hold position
  • Step 4: Lock the cable

  • Press lock tab back in
  • Cable now set to WOT position
  • Step 5: Verify

  • Release throttle
  • Press throttle to WOT - cable should pull taut
  • No slack at WOT
  • No tension at idle
  • Step 6: Test drive

  • Cold-start shift test
  • WOT shift quality
  • Light-throttle shift smoothness
  • Should feel right balance
  • Common adjustment mistakes

Throttle not fully open during adjust:

  • Cable ends up too long
  • Soft shifts after adjustment
  • Throttle past mechanical limit:

  • Linkage gets bent
  • Cable too short
  • Harsh shifts after
  • Not pressing release tab:

  • Cable stays locked at old position
  • Cant adjust effectively
  • Cable damage possible
  • When TV cable needs replacement

    Symptoms of bad cable:

  • Wont hold adjustment
  • Frayed sheath
  • Sticky operation
  • Visible damage
  • Cant achieve full travel
  • Replacement parts:

  • OEM 47RE TV cable: $80-$150
  • Mopar PN varies by year
  • Also need TV cable adjuster bracket sometimes
  • Install new TV cable

    Step 1: Remove old cable

  • Disconnect from throttle linkage
  • Disconnect at trans
  • Pull old cable through firewall
  • Step 2: Install new cable

  • Route through firewall (same path)
  • Connect at throttle body
  • Connect at trans
  • Verify free movement
  • Step 3: Adjust as above

  • Clean shift feel
  • WOT:

  • Quick, firm shifts
  • Some chirp on 1-2 acceptable

    TV cable controls:

  • Line pressure based on throttle
  • Shift firmness
  • Maximum apply pressure
  • Governor solenoid controls:

  • Shift timing
  • RPM at which to shift
  • Read our 47RE governor solenoid
  • Both must be correct for proper operation

    Common 47RE shift complaint diagnosis

    Harsh 1-2 shift:

  • TV cable too tight (most common)
  • OR governor solenoid pressure too high
  • Soft / slipping 2-3 shift:

  • TV cable too loose
  • OR worn direct clutches
  • Late shifts:

  • Governor solenoid issue
  • TV cable usually not the cause
  • Early shifts:

  • Governor solenoid or TPS issue
  • TV cable usually not the cause
  • Maintenance tip

    Annual cable check:
