No overdrive on your 47RE Cummins is most often the OD solenoid. Fix is a $40 part and 2 hours under the truck. Here is the full procedure.
Symptoms
- No overdrive engagement
- Highway RPM 600+ over normal
- OD light off (or blinking)
- P1740 (TCC/OD solenoid)
- P0743 (OD solenoid electrical)
- MPG drop 3-5
What the OD solenoid does
- Controls overdrive engagement
- Routes line pressure to OD piston
- PCM-commanded based on speed/load
- Coil resistance: 25-35 ohms
Diagnosis
Step 1: Check OD button
- Press OD button on shifter
- Light should illuminate to disable
- No light change = wiring or switch issue
Step 2: Pull codes
- P0743 confirms electrical problem
- P1740 is OD/TCC overlap
Step 3: Check ground
- Backprobe solenoid ground
- Should toggle when PCM commands OD
- Bad ground = wiring, not solenoid
Step 4: Resistance test
- Disconnect connector
- Ohm across terminals: 25-35 ohms = good
- Open or short = replace
Replacement parts
OEM OD solenoid:
- Mopar 53041040AB
- $30-$60 part
TransGo HD solenoid:

Replace together:
- Pan gasket
- Filter
- 13 quarts ATF+4
Install
- Drain trans (drain plug)
- Drop pan
- Disconnect electrical harness
- Remove 4 valve body bolts holding OD solenoid bracket
- Pull old solenoid, insert new with new O-rings
- Reinstall bracket and bolts
- Reinstall pan with new gasket
- Torque pan bolts 100 in-lb
- Refill with ATF+4
