What the overdrive solenoid does

Function:

  • Engages overdrive (4th gear)
  • Engages TCC (converter lockup) usually combined
  • PWM controlled by PCM
  • Critical for highway efficiency

Symptoms when failed:

  • No 4th gear engagement
  • High RPM at cruise (3000+ at 70 MPH)
  • MPG drops 3-5 MPG
  • P0743 - overdrive solenoid electrical
  • P1740 - TCC/OD solenoid
  • Where the solenoid is

    Location:

  • Top of valve body
  • Driver side of trans
  • Inside the pan (must drop pan)
  • Wiring:

  • Single connector
  • Internal harness routes to external connector
  • External connector at driver side of case
  • Common failure modes

    Coil opens:

  • Most common
  • P0743 code sets
  • No overdrive at all
  • Plunger sticks:

  • Intermittent operation
  • Sometimes works, sometimes not
  • Random codes
  • Internal seal leaks:

  • Pressure bypasses
  • Weak overdrive engagement
  • Soft 4th gear shift
  • Diagnosis

    Step 1: Pull DTCs

  • P0743 - confirms overdrive solenoid circuit
  • P1740 - TCC/OD combined fault
  • P0750 series - other solenoid issues
  • Step 2: Test resistance

  • Disconnect external connector at trans
  • Probe overdrive solenoid pins
  • Spec: 1-5 ohms
  • Open = bad coil
  • Short = bad solenoid
  • Step 3: Pressure test

  • Tee gauge into overdrive apply circuit
  • Pressure should rise on command
  • No pressure rise = solenoid or hydraulic issue
  • Replacement parts

    OEM Mopar solenoid:

  • $50-$120 part
  • Same as factory
  • Lifespan: 80-150k miles
  • TransGo HD solenoid:

  • $80-$150 part
  • HD coil winding
  • Better for tuned trucks
  • Always replace together:

  • Pan gasket
  • Filter
  • 13 quarts ATF+4
  • Install procedure

    Trans does NOT come out:

  • Pan drop only
  • 4-5 hour DIY total
  • Major advantage
  • Tools needed:

  • Standard sockets (10mm, 13mm, 15mm)
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Step-by-step:

  • Drain fluid via pan
  • Remove pan bolts (15-16 bolts)
  • Drop pan
  • Remove valve body bolts (10mm)
  • Drop valve body
  • Locate overdrive solenoid (top of VB)
  • Remove retaining screws
  • Disconnect wiring
  • Pull old solenoid
  • Install new with new O-rings
  • Reconnect wiring
  • Reinstall valve body in sequence
  • Torque VB bolts (10 ft-lb)
  • New pan gasket, reinstall pan
  • Refill ATF+4 (13 quarts)
  • Cost

    DIY:

  • Solenoid: $50-$150
  • Gasket + filter: $35-$65
  • 13 qts ATF+4: $130-$190
  • Time: 4-5 hours
  • Total: $215-$405
  • Shop:

  • Parts: $215-$405
  • Labor: $350-$550
  • Total: $565-$955
  • While you are in there

    Recommended additions:

  • Governor pressure solenoid (similar failure mode)
  • Pressure sensor
  • TransGo shift kit
  • Read our 47RE shift kit guide
  • Why bundle:

  • Same labor for additional parts
  • Other solenoids likely worn
  • Avoid repeat tear down
  • What if it does not fix it

    If P0743 returns:

  • Wiring fault (most likely)
  • Check external connector pins
  • Test continuity to PCM
  • If overdrive still does not engage:

  • Valve body wear (Sonnax kit needed)
  • Overdrive servo worn
  • Read our 47RE valve body upgrades
  • If P1740 returns:

  • Combined TCC/OD code
  • Could be TCC converter wear
  • Read our TCC shudder (47RE similar)
  • HD upgrade considerations

    If truck is tuned:

  • HD overdrive servo
  • Sonnax HD kit
  • $150-$250 extra parts
  • Crisper overdrive shift
  • HD valve body:

  • TransGo HD shift kit
  • Adjusts apply pressures
  • Holds tuned HP better
  • Prevention

    Service fluid every 30k:

  • Solenoids depend on clean fluid
  • Old fluid varnishes solenoid plunger
  • Read our Trans fluid color chart
  • HD trans cooler:

  • Cooler fluid = longer solenoid life
  • $300-$500 investment
  • Pays back in solenoid life
  • Bottom line

    Cheap fix when caught early:

  • $215-$405 DIY
  • 4-5 hours
  • Restores overdrive + lockup
  • Combine with related parts:

  • Governor solenoid same labor
  • Pressure sensor same labor
  • Shift kit same labor
  • $300-$500 extra parts for big upgrade
  • What you save:

  • MPG returns to normal
  • RPM drops at cruise
  • No further damage
