47RE No Movement in Drive - Causes and Fix
You put a 47RE-equipped Ram 2500 or 3500 into Drive, the engine revs, and the truck sits there. Sometimes Reverse still works. Sometimes nothing works. Those two versions of the complaint point at different parts, and the Chrysler diagnosis chart for the RE-series transmissions treats them as separate conditions: "No Drive Range (Reverse OK)" and "No Drive or Reverse (Vehicle Will Not Move)." This article walks through both, the quick tests that separate them, the parts that actually fail, and what the fix looks like on a 5.9L Cummins or V10 truck.
Parts for your 47RE
First: Reverse OK, or nothing at all?
This is the most useful single piece of information you have. Per the ATSG description of the 46RE/47RE/48RE family, the rear (forward) clutch is one of the three input driving components, and the low roller clutch is one of the holding components that carries the forward gears. Reverse does not use either of them. So a truck that backs up normally but will not pull in Drive has a problem in the forward-only path: forward clutch, input shaft sealing rings, the overrunning (low roller) clutch or the front planetary. A truck that will not move in any range has a problem upstream of all of that: fluid, filter, pump, converter, linkage or the park sprag.
Diagnosis steps
- Fluid level, hot, in Neutral. The factory chart lists low fluid first under both no-drive conditions. A 47RE that has just had a cooler line let go, or that sat for months and drained its converter into the pan, will act exactly like a dead transmission.
- Shift linkage. Second on both charts. Have someone move the shifter while you watch the manual lever on the case. If the lever does not reach the Drive detent, the transmission is not in Drive no matter what the indicator says.
- Try Manual Low (1). This is the test Transmission Digest describes for isolating a one-way clutch on a rear-wheel-drive Chrysler: in manual low the rear band is applied and helps hold the drum that is otherwise held only by the low roller clutch. If the truck moves in manual 1 but not in D or 2, the low roller (overrunning) clutch is not holding. If it will not move in 1 either, look at the forward clutch or its feed.
- Delayed vs. dead. If the truck eventually engages after several seconds, the chart calls that delayed engagement, and it lists converter drain-back (normal if it moves within about 5 seconds; a worn pump bushing if longer), a clogged filter, a mis-adjusted rear band, worn oil pump gears, reaction shaft seal rings and rear clutch sealing rings. A true no-move is a different list.
- Pan and filter. Friction material in the pan means a burned forward clutch. Metal chips or roller-clutch rollers mean the overrunning clutch or planetary. A filter packed with debris on a truck that has not been serviced can starve the pump enough to cause no movement on its own; the chart's correction for a plugged filter includes a lube-flow test and cooler flush because the same debris will be in the cooler.
- Line pressure test. The chart calls for a pressure test to confirm a damaged pump. Our 47RE/48RE line pressure test guide covers the ports and what the readings mean. Low pressure in every range points to the pump, the regulator valve or the filter; normal pressure with no forward movement points to the forward clutch, its sealing rings or the roller clutch.
Root causes: No Drive, Reverse OK
The Chrysler chart lists seven causes for this condition. Ranked by how often they show up on a high-mileage 47RE:
1. Rear (forward) clutch burnt
The chart entry is "Rear Clutch Burnt - Remove and disassemble transmission and rear clutch and seals." The forward clutch is applied in every forward range, so it takes the most cycles of any clutch in the unit and it is the one that burns when line pressure has been low for a long time. Sonnax lists "Forward clutch failure," "Burnt Forward clutch" and "Delayed Forward" among the 47RE symptoms its parts address, and its 46/47RH/RE Sure Cure kit targets "Poor Forward & Reverse engagement" with the root cause described as loss of pressure through worn valve body circuits. A burned forward clutch is usually the result of a pressure problem, which is why the fix has to include the valve body, not just new frictions.
2. Forward clutch retainer cracked
Transmission Digest and Sonnax both document that the OE forward (rear) clutch retainer on 46RH/RE, 47RH/RE and 48RE units is cast material and commonly fails from cracks and wear, especially with added power or towing loads. A cracked retainer cannot hold apply pressure, and the forward clutch quits with no warning. Sonnax's replacement 22554-HD is machined from 4140 steel and is a direct replacement for OE 52854149AA.
3. Input shaft seal rings worn or damaged
Chart entry: "Input Shaft Seal Rings Worn/Damaged - Replace seal rings and any other worn or damaged parts." The forward clutch is fed through the input shaft sealing rings. When the rings or the bore they ride in wear, apply oil leaks away before it reaches the piston. This often starts as delayed forward engagement when hot and ends as no forward movement. Sonnax's Sure Cure kit includes turbine shaft seals for this reason.
4. Overrunning (low roller) clutch broken
Chart entry: "Transmission Overrunning Clutch Broken - Remove and disassemble transmission. Replace overrunning clutch." This is the one the manual-low test catches. The low roller clutch holds the low drum in D and 2; when its rollers, springs or cage let go, the drum spins freely and the truck will not move in D but will move in 1 with the rear band applied. Transmission Digest's one-way clutch article also notes that worn roller-clutch cages cause intermittent complaints before they fail outright.
5. Front planetary broken
Chart entry: "Front Planetary Failed Broken - Remove and repair." A planetary failure is usually noisy before it is total, and it is often the downstream result of a clogged cooler starving the gearset of lube. Sonnax lists "Loss of lubrication oil to planetaries" and "Output & planet assembly failure" among the chronic 47RE problems and sells an oversized piston retainer kit to address the lube loss.
6. Valve body malfunction
Chart entry: "Valve Body Malfunction - Replace assembly if any valves or bores are damaged." A stuck manual valve or a worn pressure regulator bore can leave the forward clutch unfed. Sonnax builds oversized manual, pressure regulator and switch valves for this valve body because bore wear at high mileage is that common.
Root causes: No Drive or Reverse
When nothing works, the chart's list is: fluid level low, linkage loose or mis-adjusted, U-joint/axle/transfer case broken, filter plugged, oil pump damaged, valve body malfunction, transmission internal component damaged, park sprag not releasing, and torque converter damage. On a 47RE the practical order is fluid, then filter, then pump pressure, then converter. A converter that has stripped its turbine hub splines or lost its stator one-way clutch will let the engine rev with nothing reaching the input shaft in any range.
The fix: which part, and why
A no-move in Drive that is not fluid or linkage is a transmission-out repair. Because the forward clutch, its retainer, the input shaft rings, the low roller clutch and the front planetary are all in the main case, and because the failure almost always has a pressure or lube cause behind it, the correct fix is a full overhaul rather than a single clutch pack. A master rebuild kit gives you the frictions and steels for the forward, direct and overdrive packs, both bands, every lip seal and sealing ring including the input shaft rings, gaskets and a new filter, so the unit is not going back together with the worn rings that caused the problem.
Add a heavy-duty steel forward clutch retainer if the truck tows or has been turned up, a new low roller clutch if the manual-low test failed, and a Sonnax-updated valve body so the fresh forward clutch is fed with full pressure; see our 47RE valve body options. All 47RE rebuild kits are listed here, and the 47RE rebuild guide walks through the disassembly order.
Replace while you are in there
- Forward clutch retainer (steel) - the cast OE part is a documented crack point.
- Input shaft and reaction shaft sealing rings, plus the pump bushing - the chart lists both as delayed-engagement causes.
- Low roller clutch and its cage; check the overdrive roller clutch while the rear section is open.
- Oil pump gears or a complete pump if the pressure test was low.
- Filter and a full cooler flush - a burned clutch or a failed planetary leaves debris that will take out the new parts, and the chart calls for a lube-flow test after a plugged filter.
- Rear servo plug, band struts and the direct clutch inner lip seal - the chronic Reverse-side parts, so you do not lose Reverse six months later.
- Governor pressure solenoid and sensor if the truck has ever set a P1762 or P1763 code.
Cost and effort
The cheap outcomes are fluid, a filter, or a linkage adjustment, and they are worth ruling out before anything is pulled. Everything else is a rebuild. The parts side is led by the master kit, then the valve body, then hard parts (retainer, roller clutch, pump, planetary) only if inspection says they are needed. Labor dominates a shop invoice because the 47RE has to come out, and on a 4WD Ram the transfer case comes with it. For a DIY overhaul, plan on a full weekend with a manual open, and treat the front planetary and pump as inspect-and-decide items rather than automatic replacements. Our 47RE rebuild cost breakdown goes into what drives the total by category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my 47RE move in Reverse but not in Drive?
Because Drive depends on parts Reverse does not use: the rear (forward) clutch, the input shaft sealing rings that feed it, the low roller (overrunning) clutch and the front planetary. Any one of them can fail and leave Reverse working normally. The factory diagnosis chart lists exactly those items under "No Drive Range (Reverse OK)."
How do I tell a bad overrunning clutch from a bad forward clutch without pulling the transmission?
Try manual low. In 1 the rear band is applied and holds the same drum the low roller clutch holds, so if the truck moves in 1 but not in D or 2, the roller clutch is not holding. If it will not move in 1 either, the forward clutch or its feed is the problem.
Can a clogged filter cause a 47RE not to move at all?
Yes. The factory chart lists a plugged filter under "No Drive or Reverse," and its correction includes a lube-flow test and cooler flush because whatever plugged the filter is also in the cooler. If the filter is full of friction material or metal, an overhaul is needed, not just a filter.
