42RLE P1775 & P1776 Solenoid Switch Valve Codes: Diagnosis and the Real Fix
Your Wrangler, Liberty, Nitro or Dakota drops into limp mode, starts off in second gear, and the scan tool hands you P1776 – Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in LR Position or P1775 – Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in TCC Position. The parts counter will sell you a solenoid pack. Chrysler's own tech tip says that is the wrong move.

This is the single most misdiagnosed fault on the 42RLE, and the reason is simple: the solenoid switch valve is not in the solenoid. It is a small spring-loaded valve living in the valve body, and the code is telling you about that valve — not the electrical block bolted to the case.
What the codes actually mean
The 42RLE uses one solenoid for two jobs. Per Gears Magazine, the LR/CC solenoid applies the Low/Reverse clutch in first gear, then switches over to control torque converter clutch pressure once the unit shifts into second and above. The solenoid switch valve is the hydraulic shuttle that decides which of those two circuits the solenoid is feeding.
The PCM watches the Low/Reverse pressure switch to confirm the shuttle actually moved. When the switch state does not agree with what the solenoid was commanded to do, the PCM sets the code and drops the transmission into limp mode — second gear only — to keep you from cooking a clutch pack.
- P1775 – Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in TCC Position
- P1776 – Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in LR Position
Chrysler StarParts Tech Tip TT9000197 is blunt about it: "DO NOT replace the solenoid assy due to a P1775 … and/or a P1776 code. The 'Solenoid Switch Valve' is not in the solenoid, it is in the valve body."
Diagnosis: check the shift cable before you drop the pan
There is a five-minute check that saves a lot of 42RLE valve bodies. Chrysler's tech tip says to read the TRS Code portion of the event data stored with the DTC first:
- TRS Code reads "TR2" – the manual valve was not fully in the OD position when the code set. That is your cause. Check and adjust the shift cable, and inspect the shift control system for excessive friction or routing problems. The valve body is innocent.
- TRS Code reads "OD" – the selector was where it should have been, and a sticking solenoid switch valve is the primary cause. Now you go into the valve body and inspect the switch valve and its plugs for foreign material.
Live-data checks that isolate it
The Gears Magazine diagnostic walkthrough monitors three parameters together — LR/CC solenoid voltage output, low clutch line pressure, and the Low/Reverse pressure switch state. Their documented values on a healthy unit:
- Park/Neutral: LR/CC solenoid modulated at roughly 9.5V average, Low pressure switch grounded to 0V, low clutch pressure 121 PSI.
- Reverse: the manual valve applies the Low/Reverse clutches, the solenoid is turned off at 14.2V, and the pressure switch reads 14.2V — no circuit pressure.
- Drive, first gear: solenoid modulated near 9.5V, pressure switch grounded at 0V.
- Second gear and above: the solenoid is now modulating TCC apply, and the pressure switch is no longer grounded — about 14V, because there is no low clutch pressure.
When the pressure switch state stops tracking the solenoid command, the valve is hung up. Gears also advises verifying the Transmission Range Sensor data PIDs to rule out a range sensor fault masquerading as a switch valve problem.
The causes, ranked
Gears cites Chrysler bulletin 21-008-04 for the cause list:
- Worn-out solenoid switch valve bore letting TCC oil leak into the low clutch circuit — the most frequent cause
- Stuck solenoid switch valve
- Defective solenoid block
- Poorly adjusted manual valve
- Defective Transmission Range Sensor
- Shorted Low/Reverse pressure switch signal wire
One case study in that article is worth remembering: a transmission that developed a nick in the solenoid switch valve, causing it to stick only after reaching approximately 180°F under specific operating conditions. If your 42RLE only codes once it is warm, a cold bench test will lie to you.
The fix: repair the bore, not the solenoid
Sonnax describes the failure directly: the switch valves and plugs oscillate and stroke during operation, which wears the bore. That wear allows pressure loss and cross-leakage, and often permits the plugs to cock and hang up in the bore. Sonnax lists the resulting symptoms as codes 841, 868, 871, 988, 1775 and 1776, failsafe mode, second gear starts with the MIL on, bind-ups, burned overdrive or 4th clutches, and on 41 and 42 series units TCC apply and release concerns including engine stalling from improper lockup.
Measure before you order
Sonnax offers repairs for two different Chrysler switch valve sizes and is explicit that you must measure first: measure the large spool diameter on the OE switch valve, because Chrysler switch valves measure .420" or .453". Ordering blind gets you a part that will not fit. The published options:
- .420" large spool – Solenoid Switch Valve Plug Kit 92835-02K (no tool required), Oversized Solenoid Switch Valve Plug Kit 92835-18K, Oversized Solenoid Switch Valve & Plug Kit 92835-32K, Oversized Solenoid Switch Valve 92835-21

Sonnax notes that standard-size kits address low to moderate bore wear while oversize kits address excessive bore wear. Oversized kits require reaming and the VB-FIX valve body reaming fixture. Sonnax currently recommends oversized kit 92835-32K with tool kit F-92835-TL32 over the older combinations for a better reaming result, and the 92835-18K listing warns that the recommended bore sizing tool 92835-BST2 is no longer in production. That tooling requirement is why many independent shops send the valve body out or fit a remanufactured unit rather than buy a reamer for one job.
The same repair covers a wide family. When the solenoid pack IS the answer
The "do not replace the solenoid" rule applies to P1775 and P1776 specifically. It is not a blanket rule for the 42RLE. A defective solenoid block is still on Chrysler's own cause list, and the pack carries the pressure switches the PCM uses for all of this logic, so a pack with a failed internal switch will set these codes legitimately. If your live data shows the solenoid command itself out of range, or you have solenoid circuit codes alongside the switch valve codes, a 42RLE shift solenoid block pack is the correct part. The order of operations that keeps you from buying twice: verify the TRS code, then verify the pressure switch tracks the solenoid command, and only then decide whether you are buying a valve body repair or a solenoid pack.
Replace while you are in there
The pan has to come down and the valve body has to come out either way. Do not put it back together with the old consumables:
- Filter and pan gasket — mandatory, the pan is already off. See our transmission filter collection.
- Valve body and case gaskets — covered by a 42RLE overhaul gasket and seal kit.
- Input and output speed sensors — inexpensive, right there, and a known nuisance failure on these units. Doing them now avoids a second teardown.
- Fresh ATF+4 — the 42RLE is an ATF+4 unit and nothing else belongs in it.
If the unit has been in failsafe for a while, inspect the overdrive and 4th clutches before you close it up. Sonnax explicitly lists burned OD and 4th clutches as downstream damage from this same bore wear, and a valve body repair will not save a clutch pack that is already cooked. That is the point where a 42RLE rebuild kit stops being optional.
Cost and effort
Valve body removal on the 42RLE is a pan-down job, not a transmission-out job, which is the good news. Budget roughly two to three hours for pan, filter, valve body out and back in on a lift, plus fluid fill and a road test to confirm the codes stay gone. Difficulty is moderate: nothing about it demands specialty skills, but the valve body has small valves and plugs that will end up on the floor if you are careless, and the switch valve bore repair itself is a machining operation most DIYers will farm out.
The decision point is bore wear. A standard plug kit is a bench-level repair with no tooling at all. An oversized kit means reaming, which means either buying the Sonnax fixture and tool kit or sending the valve body to a shop that already owns them. Weigh that against a remanufactured valve body before you commit, because for a single one-off repair the tooling frequently costs more than the outsourced fix.
FAQ
Can I just clear the code and keep driving?
You can clear it, and it will come back. More importantly, limp mode is protective — the PCM locks the unit in second gear specifically to reduce the likelihood of further damage. Driving on a leaking switch valve circuit is how the overdrive and 4th clutches end up burned, which turns a valve body job into a rebuild.
Why did my new solenoid pack not fix it?
Because the solenoid switch valve is not in the solenoid pack. It is a separate spring-loaded valve in the valve body, and Chrysler's tech tip specifically warns against replacing the solenoid assembly for P1775 or P1776. If a shop replaced the pack and the code returned, the bore wear was there the whole time.
My 42RLE only sets the code when it is hot. Is that still the switch valve?
Very likely. Gears Magazine documented a unit with a nicked switch valve that stuck only after reaching approximately 180°F. Thermal effects close up a clearance that a cold test will never reveal, so diagnose at operating temperature.
Does this affect other Chrysler transmissions?
