You are driving a Ram 1500, Durango, Grand Cherokee or Dakota and the dash lights up. The truck drops out of overdrive, locks into one gear, and stays there until you shut it off and restart. Scan it and you get P0871 — OD pressure switch rationality. Sometimes P0846 or P0841 comes along with it.

Most people replace the solenoid pack, clear the code, and get about two weeks before it comes back. That is because on a 45RFE or 545RFE, the pressure switch is almost never the failed part. It is the messenger. Here is what actually breaks, how to prove it, and what to buy.

What P0871 Actually Means

The RFE family uses a five-pressure-switch system. Per the Sonnax tech article Dodge RFE Pressure Switch Diagnosis & Code P0871, each switch has its own circuit fed with system voltage (12.6–14.4V), and current is dropped to 50mA or less by 300-ohm resistors inside the solenoid pack. Each switch sits naturally open with no hydraulic pressure on it. When clutch pressure hits 22 psi the switch closes; it releases back open at 11 psi. Closed means the signal wire is pulled toward ground and the controller sees 25–50mV.

P0871 is a rationality code. The controller is not reporting a broken wire — it is reporting that the OD pressure switch closed when it had no business closing. The OD clutch is not commanded on in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear, so if the OD switch goes closed down there, something is feeding that circuit pressure it should not have.

Step One: The KOER Reverse Test

Before you pull a pan, rule out the electrical side. Sonnax points out a genuinely useful quirk of this system: with key on, engine running, selector in Reverse, all five pressure switches should read open. That single condition verifies the signal wires, the connector and the controller feed are all doing their job right now.

With the scanner watching PSW data in Reverse, gently wiggle the transmission connector and harness. Any switch that flickers to closed is an electrical fault, and it must be fixed before you go any further. One important trap from the same article: absence of voltage reads the same as a closed switch. A signal wire shorted to ground or a signal wire that is open both look identical to a hydraulically applied clutch at the controller.

Note that this test cannot be run if the vehicle is already in failsafe — in failsafe the relay in the TIPM cuts voltage to the transmission entirely.

Step Two: Where It Almost Always Is

If the KOER Reverse test is clean and you still have P0871 setting in 2nd or 3rd gear, the problem is hydraulic and it is in the valve body. Sonnax is blunt about the odds: worn valve body bores and outer switch valve plugs are the cause of P0871 roughly 90% of the time. It is common enough that many shops ream and oversize the solenoid switch valve on every single build as a matter of course.

The solenoid switch valve's main job is shuttling fluid between the low/reverse clutch and the TCC, but it also routes oil to the 2nd and OD clutches through two shuttle plugs at the end of the bore. As the bore and those plugs wear, line pressure pushes through the extra clearance and partially applies the OD clutch — or keeps it from releasing. The OD pressure switch sees that pressure, closes in a gear where it shouldn't, and the controller throws P0871 and drops to failsafe.

Identify Your Valve Before You Order Anything

This is where people waste money. There are two switch valve designs and you cannot tell them apart by the plugs — both use .453" diameter outer plugs. You have to measure the large spool on the valve itself:

  • Original design: .420" large spool OD
  • New design: .453" large spool OD

Per Sonnax, the 45RFE group (45RFE, 545RFE, 62TE, 68RFE) did not get the new .453" design until around the 2010 model year. The 41TE branch got it around 2006. Measure it. Using the wrong reaming tooling can cause irreparable damage to the valve body casting.

Once you know the diameter, the fix is a Sonnax oversized solenoid switch valve — part no. 92835-21 or kit 92835-32K for .420" bores, or kit 92835-31K / plug kit 92835-22K for .453" bores. If the bore is eroded or porous, no oversized valve will save it. Sonnax notes that the aluminum alloy used in these castings is inconsistent, and some switch valve bores are simply beyond repair. That is the point where a replacement valve body is the cheaper, faster answer than chasing a bore that will never seal.

Don't Skip the Checkballs

If you are in the valve body anyway, checkball placement is the other thing that sets rationality codes — and it is a common mistake after a rebuild or a valve body swap. From the Sonnax article Chrysler RFE Valve Bodies: Understanding Checkball Locations & Function:

  • '06–'10 valve bodies use seven checkballs. Two of them (#6 and #7) were deleted in '11–'18 RFE valve bodies. These are not interchangeable without consequences.
  • Checkball #4 missing lets TCC kill the engine in forward, because it moves the switch valve position and brings on the converter instead of the low/reverse clutch. P0871 may set.
  • Checkball #7 missing dumps 2C apply oil at the rear of the manual valve, causing a 2nd gear neutral condition. P0846 may set.
  • Checkball #1 missing causes a bind in 2nd gear; P0841 may set.
  • Checkball #5 missing feeds both 2C and 4C, binding in 2nd gear; P0988 may set.

If you bought a used valve body off a truck of unknown year and now have codes you did not have before, count your checkballs against the correct diagram for that casting before you blame anything else.

Replace While You're In There

The pan is down and the valve body is out. These are the items worth doing in the same shot rather than a second teardown:

  • Filter (both filters on 45RFE/545RFE — the spin-on cooler filter is separate on many applications)
  • Pan gasket and a full fluid fill with the correct spec fluid
  • Accumulator pistons — Sonnax lists worn pistons as a cause of slide shifts, high CVIs, 1-2 shudder and coastdown clunk (kits 44894-01K / 44894-01MK, or 92834-03K for 45RFE/545RFE)
  • Solenoid pack, if it has high mileage or you already replaced it once as a guess
  • TC limit valve kit 44912-03K if you also have delayed engagement, low cooler flow or converter overheating complaints

Cost and Effort

Doing the switch valve repair correctly requires reaming tooling and a vacuum test setup, which is why most DIYers land on a replacement or remanufactured valve body instead. Budget roughly 2–4 hours for an in-vehicle valve body R&R on most RFE applications — it is a pan-down job, not a transmission-out job, which is the good news here. Difficulty is moderate: if you can drop a pan, keep your checkballs organized and torque bolts to spec, you can do this.

The bad news is what happens if you ignore it. A switch valve that will not let the OD clutch fully release means the OD clutch is dragging. Sonnax lists "OD clutch burned" as a direct symptom of switch valve wear. Left alone, a valve body repair turns into a rebuild.

FAQ

Will replacing the solenoid pack fix P0871?
Usually not. The pressure switches live in the solenoid pack, so replacing it does occasionally fix a genuine switch fault — but Sonnax attributes about 90% of P0871 to switch valve bore and plug wear in the valve body. Run the KOER Reverse test first; if the switches behave electrically, the pack is not your problem.

Can I just clear the code and drive it?
You can, and it will come back. More importantly, the condition setting the code is usually a partially applied or non-releasing OD clutch. Every mile you drive that way is burning clutch material.

How do I know if my valve body is the 7-checkball version?
By year: '06–'10 RFE valve bodies use seven checkballs, and '11–'18 dropped #6 and #7. Confirm against the factory hydraulic diagram for your specific casting before assembly — do not assume a replacement unit matches what came out.
