Ford's AOD was the first mass-production four-speed overdrive automatic to land behind an American V8, and GM's 10L90 is the ten-speed that shows up behind the company's most powerful engines. Gear ratios and the 2.00 reverse for the AOD are listed by the Ford AOD reference entry and by F150Hub's AOD/AODE spec sheet, which also gives the aluminum case and roughly 150 lbs dry. Chevrolet Performance publishes the 10L90-E's "7.39:1 overall gear ratio spread," its "aggressive 4.70:1 first gear," its "0.64:1 top gear ratio" and "three overdrive gears" on the SuperMatic 10L90-E page.

Gearing: Where the Ten-Speed Wins Outright

The AOD's 2.40 first gear was a compromise. It had to launch the car and still let a 0.67 overdrive drop highway rpm, and Ford squeezed that whole job into four ratios. The result is a 3.58:1 spread and big rpm drops between gears, which is exactly why AOD cars feel like they fall on their face on the 1-2 shift with tall rear gears.

The 10L90 attacks the same problem with a 4.70 first gear and a 0.64 top gear, for a 7.39:1 spread. That means a much harder launch multiplication and a lower cruise rpm at the same time, with eight ratios in between so the engine never falls out of its power band. Chevrolet Performance rates the crate 10L90-E package at an "output torque rating of 650 lb.-ft." The engineering reference for the joint Ford-GM ten-speed family lists the 10L90 (RPO MX0) at a maximum input torque of 900 N·m, which is 664 lb-ft, with a 7.386 gear span, built around four gearsets, two brakes and three clutches.

Control Strategy: The Single Biggest Practical Difference

The AOD is a hydraulic transmission. Line pressure and shift feel are set by a throttle valve cable or rod tied to the carburetor or throttle body, not by a computer. That linkage is not a kickdown cable and it is not optional. According to DIY Ford's AOD installation guide, throttle valve pressure should read 5 psi at idle with the throttle closed and 33 psi with a 10mm spacer inserted, and the guide is blunt about the consequence of getting it wrong: "Soft shifts are a strong indication of slippage, which means you are burning clutches and bands. Remember, you can burn up an AOD in short order." More AODs have been destroyed by a lazy TV cable than by horsepower.

The 10L90 has no such adjustment. Shift pressure, timing and torque converter clutch apply are all commanded by the transmission control module through solenoids in the valve body. That removes the number-one AOD failure cause and replaces it with a different one: electronic and hydraulic control faults that throw codes instead of quietly cooking clutches.

Known Failure Points on Each

AOD

  • Direct clutch drum and intermediate stub shaft. The small-diameter direct clutch is the recognized weak link, and failures concentrate where the drum and stub shaft join. Sonnax markets a Smart-Tech direct clutch drum and shaft kit specifically because the OE drum and stub shaft are the limiting parts on these units.
  • Burned clutches and bands from TV misadjustment, as described above.
  • Converter shudder. The AOD reference entry describes shudder from fluid breakdown under heavy use, with the feel compared to driving over rumble strips, and points to frequent fluid changes (especially when towing) as the preventive.
  • The split torque path. In third gear the AOD sends roughly 60 percent of power mechanically through a direct connection and 40 percent hydrodynamically through the converter. It is elegant, but it puts the load on that same direct drum assembly.

The dominant issue on GM's Gen. 2 ten-speeds is valve body wear. Sonnax's technical write-up on the GM ten-speed safety recall explains that a control valve in the valve body wears over time and causes a gradual loss of control pressure. The culprit is the feed limit low valve, which also acts as the solenoid regulator for the default disable solenoid. When it wears, solenoid feed pressure drops, the default enable and default select valves shift position, and the transmission can drop gears or bind up.

Sonnax lists the real-world symptoms: momentary wheel lock-up at higher speeds, a sudden downshift back to 2nd gear, complaints on upshifts into the higher gears such as 7th, and a P0747 code, which as the article puts it means the "E" clutch is on when it should be off. Their diagnostic tip is a good one: the unit usually behaves until it gets hot, so let the vehicle cool and see if the complaint disappears. The Fix: What You Actually Buy

If the AOD is staying in the car, a rebuild is the answer, and the direct drum decision gets made on the bench. Replace While You Are In There

  • AOD: front pump seal and bushing, all bands (the low/reverse and overdrive bands both live in there), the filter, the direct drum and stub shaft if the unit saw any real power, and the torque converter. Do not reuse a converter behind burned clutches.
  • 10L90: the feed limit low valve while the valve body is on the bench, the TCC regulator valve if there is any converter clutch complaint, filter, pan gasket, and a full fluid exchange including the cooler.
  • Both: flush or replace the cooler and lines. Debris left in a cooler will kill a fresh unit.

Cost and Effort

An AOD rebuild is a friendly job by modern standards. It is a hydraulically controlled four-speed with no computer to satisfy, and a competent home builder with a clean bench can do it. Plan roughly 8 to 12 hours for the R&R and the rebuild combined, plus the TV adjustment afterward. Fluid capacity runs about 14 quarts total with the converter, per the DIY Ford guide, using Dexron III or Mercon V depending on the build; F150Hub lists Mercon V (Motorcraft XT-5-QMC) and the Motorcraft FT52 filter.

The 10L90 is the opposite. Valve body work is doable in-vehicle in a few hours, but a full rebuild is a specialist job involving three clutch packs, four planetary sets and a control module that has to be programmed and relearned. Budget significantly more shop time, and expect the diagnostic step to matter more than the wrenching.

Swapping a 10L90 into an older Ford chassis is a project, not a bolt-in. It is a GM transmission with a GM bellhousing pattern, so it needs an adapter or a GM engine, plus a standalone controller. The Chevrolet Performance crate version at least ships with a controller, a torque converter and a slip-yoke-type tailshaft that works with a conventional prop shaft. Which One to Choose

  • Keep the AOD if the vehicle is a Ford, the build is period-correct or lightly modified, and you want a transmission you can service yourself without a laptop. Set the TV cable correctly and it will live.
  • Choose the 10L90 if you are behind a modern GM V8, want the 7.39:1 spread and 4.70 first gear, and can live with electronic control and valve body maintenance.
  • If you are simply replacing what broke, do not cross-shop these at all. They share no parts, no bellhousing pattern and no control strategy. Rebuild what you have.

Is the 10L90 stronger than the AOD?
By published rating, yes, and by a wide margin. The ten-speed family lists a 900 N·m (664 lb-ft) maximum input torque for the 10L90, and Chevrolet Performance rates its crate 10L90-E at 650 lb-ft output.
