10L90 vs 6R80: Differences, Strength Limits, and Which One to Choose
These two transmissions get compared constantly, and it is usually for one of two reasons: you are shopping a swap and want to know which case to build around, or you already have one in the driveway acting up and you want to know what it is going to take to fix it. They are not close relatives. The GM 10L90 is a ten-speed clutch-to-clutch unit co-developed with Ford in the mid-2010s. The Ford 6R80 is a six-speed built on the Lepelletier planetary layout that traces back to the ZF 6HP26. Different eras, different control strategies, and very different failure lists.
The hard numbers side by side
Wikipedia's ratio table for the Ford-GM ten-speed program lists the 10L90 at a 4.615:1 first gear and a 0.689:1 tenth, a total ratio span of 7.386:1 with an average step between gears of 1.249. Maximum input torque for the GM version is listed at 900 N-m, roughly 664 lb-ft, which is higher than the Ford 10R80's 800 N-m (590 lb-ft) rating from the same program.
The 6R80 runs 4.171, 2.340, 1.521, 1.143, 0.867 and 0.691:1 forward with a 3.403:1 reverse, ratios Wikipedia notes are identical to the ZF 6HP26 it descends from. That works out to about a 6.04:1 span. Maximum input torque is listed at 800 N-m, or 590 lb-ft. F150Hub's 6R80 spec sheet puts dry weight around 215 pounds, calls for MERCON LV fluid at 13.1 quarts, and lists the Motorcraft FT188 filter.
So on paper the 10L90 holds a meaningful torque advantage and a much wider spread, meaning a deeper first gear for launch plus three overdrive ratios for cruising. The 6R80 gives up ratio count but gains simplicity, and its Lepelletier gearset is shared architecture with the GM 6L family and the Aisin AWTF-80 SC, which means a deep and mature parts supply.
Where each one actually lives
The published application list for the 10L90 covers the 2017 through 2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the 2019 to 2020 Cadillac CT6, and the 2020-and-later Cadillac CT5 and CT4. The 6R80's biggest home is the Ford F-150. Diagnosis: what each unit fails at first
10L90 - start at the feed limit low valve
This is the single most important thing to know about a Gen. 2 10L90. Sonnax identifies the feed limit low valve as the root cause behind GM Safety Recall N242480630, affecting the 10L1000 and Gen. 2 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90. Sonnax states the valve can wear out in as little as 30,000 miles. The symptom list they publish is specific: momentary wheel lockup, code P0747, a sudden downshift to 2nd from a high gear, harsh shifts, 5th gear only, a reduced propulsion message, and eventually burnt clutches from the pressure loss. Beyond the valve body, Sonnax lists the recurring hard-part failures on the ten-speed family as CDF drum sleeve movement, cylinder clutch container failure (the shops call it stove pipe failure), main shaft plugs loosening, overheating tied to an incorrect ATF level, and speed sensor problems. Worth noting: they point out that drum sleeve movement and sealing ring damage are caused by shift issues, not by the valve body itself, so fixing the drum without fixing what caused the bad shifts just buys you a comeback.
One control-side detail that changes how you diagnose a ten-speed: Sonnax explains these valve bodies use casting-integrated direct-acting solenoids that only produce clutch pressure with current applied. Unplug the transmission electrically and it has no movement at all. That is normal behavior, not a broken unit.
6R80 - start with adapts, then the correct band number
The 6R80's classic complaint is shift quality rather than a safety-recall valve. Sonnax's 6R80 and 6R140 troubleshooting article walks a 2-3 shift that alternately flares and binds. Their first step was resetting the adapts and running 20 to 25 stop-and-start cycles from 1st up to 6th and back down, which they note usually resolves an adaptation problem on its own. Free, and it should be step one before anyone opens the pan.
When that does not fix it, the apply logic points the finger. During a 2-3 shift the 3-5-R clutch applies while the 2-6 clutch releases, so both of those solenoids are suspects. Sonnax's practical call in that case was to replace both at once rather than pull the valve body twice.
Critical 6R80 rule from the same article: these transmissions use solenoid band numbers, and unless you are programming in a new calibration code, you replace a solenoid with the exact same band number that came out of that position. Get that wrong and you have engineered a new shift complaint.
The fix, and what to buy
On a 6R80 with harsh shifts, flare, or limp-mode behavior traced to the solenoid pack, the practical repair is the conductor plate and solenoid assembly rather than chasing individual pieces. Replace while you are in there
- Filter and pan gasket, both units. On the 6R80 that is the Motorcraft FT188 per F150Hub.
- Fresh fluid to the correct spec. F150Hub calls out MERCON LV, 13.1 quarts, on the 6R80.
- Separator plate inspection. Sonnax warns the impregnated plate filters come loose and rip, and a displaced one sticks valves.
- Speed sensors on the ten-speed, which Sonnax lists among the common repeat issues.
- Cooler lines and cooler flush if the unit failed with burnt clutch material in it.
- Verify fluid level correctly. Sonnax ties ten-speed overheating directly to incorrect ATF level.
Cost and effort, honestly
A 6R80 pan-and-conductor-plate job is a driveway-possible repair for a competent DIYer with a lift or good jack stands. Budget roughly two to four hours, plus the adapt relearn drive cycle afterward. A 6R80 valve body swap is a step up but still an in-vehicle job on most F-150s.
The 10L90 is harder across the board. Valve body access, the feed limit valve repair, and anything involving the CDF drum or clutch container is shop work, and the drum and stove-pipe repairs mean the unit comes out. Plan on a full R and R and a rebuild rather than a bolt-on part. If you are choosing a transmission to build for a project, that difficulty gap matters as much as the torque rating.
Which one to choose
Choose the 10L90 if you want the ratio spread and the higher torque number, you are working in a GM RWD platform it already fits, and you have shop support or the skills for a deeper repair. Choose the 6R80 if you want a proven, parts-rich six-speed with straightforward in-vehicle service, and 590 lb-ft of rated input torque is enough for your build.
